Episode 391: Like Crabs in a Bucket
« on: July 20, 2014, 01:04:00 PM »

After doing this for years you would think everyone would have built up a camaraderie, but in the end everyone's just trying to be the first to escape.

As Jonny raced home from the airport, the SS Radio Free Nintendo pulled out of harbor with Captain James at the helm. Joined by First Mate Gui and Cabin Boy Jon, they managed to safely traverse the dangerous seas of New Business. James continues his voyage into the legal system with the fan translation of Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and then pulls into the familiar waters of the Wind Waker HD. Guillaume then charts a course for Herc's Adventure, a follow-up from the creator of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Game & Wario, his free Club Nintendo Platinum reward. Finally, Jon looks at the rather limited selection of the Club Nintendo Gold Rewards before talking us into the halls of Super Castlevania IV.

After the break the seas get a bit rougher for our brave crew. An examination of Nintendo's recent patent filings is followed by a spirited discussion of which Nintendo executive is the biggest "beefcake." The crew reenters the stable seas with questions about our love of Nintendo and Summer Games Done Quick. Finally, for our last email, the intrepid ship is boarded by Dr. Jonathan Metts - just in time for a discussion on how to make podcast conversation sound organic.

Arr, 'tis another time when it would be best to be accompanied by Blue Balls and Sweet Pete.

Good show. That e-mail on Nintendo executives had me smiling.

Also, I pick Super Mario Land 2.

I actually really liked the 'navel-gazing', as I always love hearing about what goes into making this not stammering stupidity, because that's a lot of my speech. I gate myself all the time, and thus I stutter, I 'uh' and 'uhm' more than Jeff Goldblum, and I often take a moment to formulate what it is I'm going to say before I speak.

I actually do know a couple of shows like Fandoms Unlimited/Bronyville that actually put their show notes out in the form of a google doc with the podcast or as a preview to the podcast.

Also, I desperately want to see the crumpled wad of paper that is the show notes for 103. that, or someone make a mock-up of what actually transpired during that event. Or a mock-up that just says "play Jason Ricci and New Blood for 2 hours".

You know, I think the scope of the Nintendo executive question was a too limited.  If you open it up a little, you can include the entirety of the Treehouse staff, because Bill Trinen and every male on the Treehouse staff... *fans self*

About speedrunning exposing game design flaws and all kind of glitches. This is actually what DMC-style game are famous for. They are very loosely constructed allowing all kinds of glitches and semi-abusing of combat systems and animations. All kinds of cancels and weird stuff that benefit you hugely if you discover it.

I just tried to do that pacifist run in Ninja Gaiden, couldn't get past 2-2 D: Feels doable though -- in some spots you just have to calculate your jumps so that you can get hit by respawning enemy in exact spot in the air and then you land in invincible state and can jump further even if there is some guy standing there.

I just want to say I love the namedrop to Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road.  I loved that game as a kid, and now I need to find out a way to play it again.

Not sure I've played the original, but it sounds very similar to Midway's Super Off-Road, which can be found on the Midway Arcade Treasures collections for various recent systems.

So I think gui's complaints about game and wario's unlock structure also applies to my impressions of NES Remix.

After some quick google-fu, it appears it's the same game, but they had to remove the name due to legal reasons a-la Mike Tyson's Punch Out.  Thanks for the heads-up.  Looks like it's time to drag out my PS2 and shop around on Amazon.
