TalkBack / Gunbrick: Reloaded (Switch) Review
« on: April 13, 2020, 11:55:53 AM »

So simple, yet so brilliant.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53469/gunbrick-reloaded-switch-review

From time to time a game comes along that just scratches that itch you didn’t know you had. The side-scrolling, platforming genre has endured countless variations over the past few decades, with crazy new ideas bursting out of game designs all over the world. Enter Gunbrick: Reloaded - a game where you play as a little dude in a square (with a newly added cube mode!) and roll yourself across the land using a couple of simple abilities. The concept is fun to learn and easy to understand, but did it hold my attention over the course of the campaign? Absolutely, and then some.

You may have heard of the developer Nitrome for their various mobile releases, including the original Gunbrick. They also released the fantastic Bomb Chicken on the Switch back in 2018, which has many similarities to Gunbrick in its simple puzzle platforming gameplay.

The main hook of Gunbrick is just how exactly you maneuver your little square robot through each stage without jumping. On one side there’s a gun that can both shoot and neutralize enemies, and shoot to reach and push buttons/switches to interact with the world. If you aim the gun to the ground and shoot it will propel you upward so you can fly. On the opposite side of the gun is a shield that can withstand basically anything you throw at it or walk over with it. Enemy attacks, lasers, flamethrowers, you name it: the shield is strong. (Although it does make you wonder why they didn’t make the other sides of the robot out of the same material.)

These two features are used in tons of clever ways, and it was always fun to figure out the solution. The checkpoint system spread out through the levels always insured a fast and close respawn, so taking chances at different ideas is encouraged.

Hidden inside of some of the levels are bonus levels you can find and unlock to play, newly introduced in this “Reloaded” version.  These aren’t any ordinary levels though, they actually take Gunbrick into a new isometric dimension. The look of these levels are incredible, and the transferring of gameplay into 3D is even better. These levels are a tad easier, but introduce a whole new set of challenges that end up being super satisfying to surmount. For instance, breaking a pillar of bricks in the ground beneath your robot and then falling through your newly created hole is ridiculously fun, I just didn’t want it to end.

The only problem I had with Gunbrick: Reloaded was the menu system. When I started the game back up the menu design didn’t make it clear where I was in the game, or even which world I was in, so multiple times I jumped into one of the bonus levels that I had already beaten, only to quit back to the main menu and try to find the main campaign levels.

Gunbrick: Reloaded is just super fun and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a challenging but not punishing puzzle platformer. The standard levels and boss battles are charmingly difficult and the new isometric mode is a blast, the game just left me wanting more. Nitrome continues to show some great support for the Switch, and I personally can’t wait to see what they have next up their sleeve.

TalkBack / New GameBoy Game Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe Unboxing
« on: April 04, 2020, 06:59:07 AM »

It's the year 2020 and Perry has unboxed a brand new Game Boy game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/53407/new-gameboy-game-tobu-tobu-girl-deluxe-unboxing

Remember the Game Boy? We sure hope so. If you need a refresher, the classic Nintendo system debuted all the way back in April 1989.

Through an amazing amount of technology, wisdom and courage, publisher First Press Games has released a new title for the ol' "Gray Brick" thirty years after the system released. This comes in the form of Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe, a game funded on kickstarter that plays on all Game Boy systems that support original Game Boy games.

Check out Perry's unboxing of this cool release above. You can also see every First Press Games release at their website FirstPressGames.com by clicking here.

TalkBack / Wunderling (Switch) Review
« on: March 31, 2020, 04:35:33 AM »

"Whatever you do, do it well." - Walt Disney

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53377/wunderling-switch-review

Full disclosure: I love platformers. In fact, it would probably be a safe bet to call them my favorite video game genre. No matter how many years I have played them, the gameplay of jumping from left to right onto various platforms somehow never seems to get old. Now of course, I have played tons of platformers that didn’t feel great, and frankly, just weren’t fun. So how does developer Retroid’s latest eShop release stack up? Fortunately, Wunderling has a unique twist that ends up being satisfying, cute and most importantly, fun.

Wunderling starts out as a single-button, forced-running platformer. A good reference point for Nintendo fans may be Super Mario Run (released on mobile devices), but Wunderling is a bit different in its structure, which is extremely simple. The goal is straight-forward, but only in a metaphorical sense, for the levels are far from being one direction.

The story follows a hero journeying across the land to save a princess, with a dastardly evil witch trying to stop him. Trying to think of new ways to catch the hero, the witch empowers a tiny little minion, the titular Wunderling, to chase the hero down by jumping through a series of diverse and enjoyable levels. The catch here is that Wunderling only moves one direction at a time, only changing when he bumps into walls. With a few fun additional abilities, that’s basically it gameplay-wise. And you know what? It totally works.

In each level are little seedlings sprawled out around the terrain. These not only scratch that delicious collect-a-thon itch, but also refill your dwindling stamina meter. This rudimentary system ends up being quite brilliant, for it both forces the player to not die (in a surprisingly calm way) and helps the player to figure out any puzzling parts they are stuck on by subtlety showing what’s possible and what’s not.

While the simple controls are nice, feeling both floaty and tight, the level design is really what stood out the most. It really is wonderfully clever. Adding to the overall cuteness of the game, every level has a treasure chest to find that grants a unique piece of clothing or an accessory to deck out your adorable character.

Some levels even have secret exits that unlock bonus levels, and by golly these can provide quite the difficult challenge to surmount, or just even to locate. I had to use every single physics trick that I could think of to overcome some of these puzzles, and what resulted was just some good ol’ video game fun. Unfortunately, there were times when starting from either the beginning or a checkpoint after a failed attempt would take a long time just to get back to the challenge I was trying to accomplish. Basically, there’s a good chance that you will play some somewhat large parts of levels repeatedly if you are going to try to 100% the game.

All in all, Wunderling was as fun and cute as I would have hoped. The simple controls are a welcome change from the standard side-scrolling platformer. The level design is really spectacular as well, leaving me smiling many times when I finally figured out how to get to certain places. Somehow, the platformer genre continues to entertain me, and Wunderling does a great job of bringing something both fresh and tried and true.

TalkBack / OVERWHELM (Switch) Review
« on: April 04, 2019, 03:03:11 AM »

There is a hive. There is always a hive.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/50193/overwhelm-switch-review

OVERWHELM is a Metroid/roguelike platformer set in a vast monochromatic hive, with the goal being to take down every boss located in every corner of the map. With a one-hit death and limited lives, this certainly is no easy task and requires a great amount of skill. Unfortunately, while the game has a fantastic sense of dread and style, the lack of upgrades and janky/unfair deaths holds this one back from being a truly fantastic roguelike experience.

The controls are a little different than one might be familiar with when playing a Metroid-like game, for the player actually has full 360º control over their gun. This allows ultra precision when dealing with the overworld’s enemies, but combined with the melee attack it can be a little confusing to wield at first. The game starts you off with using the shoulder buttons to attack, and in the long run this is probably the best way to play. Fortunately, you are allowed to change the button scheme in any way you’d like.

The visuals feature big and chunky pixels, with a standard Virtual Boy red and hellish look to the surroundings. If red isn’t your color, they let you choose from a handful of others to suit your preference. The music works together with the visuals quite nicely to present a world of terror and danger, with sustained dissonance warning the player whenever a threat is near. The bosses are pretty neat: each differing in attack patterns, scale, and design. Every time one is defeated, a certain aspect of the world will get more threatening, like creatures being able to crawl on the walls or being able to fly, making them more aggressive and sinister.

What also instills fear is when you find out how easily you can die. The slightest mistake can be your downfall; if you touch literally anything without either your fist or a bullet, you are dead. You get three lives to reach a boss and take it down, claim its gem, and bring it back to the main hub. If the tension still hasn’t mounted enough for you, every time you die your field of vision cleverly shrinks a little to make the game that much harder. Obviously, the more you can see the better prepared you’ll be, but of course the opposite is also true.

This leads me to the main problem I experienced with the game: the seemingly unfair deaths that can occur. Bosses have this sort of glitching ability to teleport around the room, and sometimes they can appear so close that you have no choice but to get hit and die. In the main world, the gameplay is a little too fast for a one hit-death, and it just doesn’t feel good to get hit by a passing enemy that should have been hit by your gun or melee attack. Frankly, it feels cheap, and I think that while it doesn’t happen all the time, OVERWHELM could have greatly improved on this by granting just one extra hit point to account for the jank. The included co-op option does allow a player to be resurrected, so working together can be a much more enjoyable experience if you can manage to find a skillful friend to play with.

All in all, OVERWHELM is a fun and neat little roguelike with an unfortunate problem: it can feel unforgiving in the worst way. While it’s far from being unplayable or unenjoyable, it can simply be disheartening to be on an incredible run only to be cheaply killed by either a teleporting boss or a random overworld enemy. If you can get past that, there is an amusing game that I could recommend to roguelike fans.

TalkBack / Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch) Review
« on: March 29, 2019, 03:51:05 AM »

It's time to take the ol’ G-SOPHIA for a joy ride.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/50135/blaster-master-zero-2-switch-review

When the Switch launched in 2017, it was accompanied with a beautiful little return of the classic Blaster Master series in the form of Blaster Master Zero. This was a title that I fell in love with, for it was a welcome return to the series’ roots—with an updated game design that made it more approachable while still maintaining its rather harsh difficulty. Developer Inti Creates has been quite active in developing a bunch of games since then, and with the relative success of Zero I know I wasn’t the only one clamoring for a sequel. Now, in conjunction with developer Sunsoft, we have the aptly-named Blaster Master Zero 2, a sequel that seemingly came out of nowhere and does everything you’d hope the next entry would provide to fans of the series.

Taking place directly following Zero, Jason, Fred, and Eve are traveling through space in the classic and dependable SOPHIA, a tank that can not only soar between galaxies with ease but can also jump across various platforms. But that’s not all, for the legendary tank has been upgraded to the G-SOPHIA, adding in a host of new powers and a new “Gaia” energy system gauge that fills up by slamming down on to the ground from tall heights and converting the kinetic energy into SP, which is used for the tank’s powers.

The Blaster Master series has always been known for its dynamic gameplay, featuring two different modes that intertwine throughout the game’s campaign. Most of the time the player is controlling a tank through a side-scrolling Metroid-like world, gaining new and powerful abilities to fight off enemies and unlocking new paths in the different environments. Where the game cleverly spices up gameplay is with the ability to eject Jason from the G-SOPHIA and walk around the world alone. This can be quite treacherous, for his ability to withstand falling from a short height rivals Jump Man from Donkey Kong, and you’ll need to be careful maneuvering each area to progress. Every once in a while, a cave with a Jason-sized opening will appear, which introduces us to the second gameplay mode: an isometric shooter.

When Jason enters a small cave (leaving his trusted tank behind), the game completely changes its feel of scale and control and brings a host of new mechanics and power ups as well. The biggest upgrade to Jason in Zero 2 is his new ability to chain powerful counter attacks that, while somewhat janky at times, will prove vital to taking down some tough sections. These dungeon-crawling sections can be absolutely brutal, but also feature some fantastic original bosses—like the main world bosses—that will challenge you to understand and utilize every weapon at your disposal to surmount the challenge.

And that’s where I think BMZ2 excels the most in nailing its neo-retro vibe; specifically, the game can just be brutally hard. One boss in particular is cleverly made up of multiple sections to take on to defeat it, each one being tough on their own. But like previously mentioned, exploring your arsenal to find the best power up or weapon against each boss will lead to victory, and incidentally conjure up that great feeling of satisfaction we all know and love.

With a bigger world map with many different planets to check out, exploring has never felt better. This new more expansive world system allows for some planets to be both huge and full of new creatures and sections, while offering some smaller planets all based around one quick objective. This whole aspect of the game is really what stood out to me the most from Zero. The clear separation of areas/worlds makes it feel great to travel between planets and ties the game together very nicely.

Quite simply, I had a ton of fun playing through Blaster Master Zero 2. It was pretty much exactly what I wanted in a sequel to a beloved game franchise of mine. The game progresses through and uncovers new abilities at a swift and balanced pace. The weapons are super fun to discover and mess with, and the very nature of what makes Blaster Master gameplay so excellent has never shone so bright and wonderful. If you love great retro games, you won’t want to miss out on Blaster Master Zero 2.

With a manual designed by our very own David Lloyd!

The next release in Super Rare Game (SRG) lineup is not just one game, but a collection of four different games in the Fairune series released as a physical package for the Nintendo Switch. Fairune Collection contains 4 titles; Fairune, Fairune 2, Fairune Origin and Fairune Blast. You can check out our review written by Jordan Rudek (@riskman64) here.

As a cool bonus for NWR fans, the 20 page manual included in this release was designed by our very own Associate Editor David Lloyd (@filteredgamer)!

"Fairune is a retro-styled adventure RPG. Our heroine embarks upon a journey to unlock three mysterious statues and seal away a great evil. Throughout the journey she will need to solve puzzles, fight monsters, discover new weapons and improve her abilities.

Fairune 2 brings our heroine back for another perilous quest, this time to find a lost fairy. This sequel delivers a bigger world for those that are ready for the challenge.

Fairune Origin, being released for the first time, offers an intriguing look at the beginnings of the IP. It provides a short but fun adventure and illustrates how SKIPMORE conceptualised the gameplay of the two games that followed.

Fairune Blast is an unlockable treat that offers players something completely different. It’s a colourful shoot-em-up, perfect for pick-up-and-play action on the Nintendo Switch!" - (via Super Rare Games' press release)
