micro-USB needs to be abolished
« on: December 10, 2013, 03:40:58 PM »
I have no idea why micro-USB became the new standard for charging cables. It's too fragile, and the thin metal connector bends easily.

Why can't we get something more durable, like a cylindrical-shaped connector (like what most PC's use)? Or better yet, make the actual connector out of hardened plastic instead of thin metal.

Pretty soon we won't need it anyway as everything will be wireless including charging.
Wireless data, sound and power. The future is so close you could almost feel it.... if it weren't wireless.

I highly doubt TV's, refrigerators, and PC's will use wireless power.

Anyways, my point still stands. Micro-USB is terrible and needs to be replaced by a new standard. Why not use cylindrical-shaped plugs, like what laptops and modems use?

Yeah, but they also don't use micro-usb, which is what this thread was about.

Why can't manufacturers just create a new plug that's shaped like a cylinder, like what laptops and modems use?

Headphones all use a standard connector, so why can't all power cables use a single connector standard?

I like the Apple lightning plug for the iDevices for no other reason than that it's symmetrical.

that lightning plug looks exposed though. Wear and tear on the connectors looks like it could be a problem.

cylindrical cables are stronger structure-wise, but they are more likely to damage the device it plugs into when you put bending pressure on the plug.

A new standard is already coming http://www.usb.org/press/USB-IF_Press_Releases/Type-C_PR_20131203_Final.pdf

Why can't manufacturers just create a new plug that's shaped like a cylinder, like what laptops and modems use?

Headphones all use a standard connector, so why can't all power cables use a single connector standard?
It would be difficult to fit all the necessary pins (both power and data) in that format.

Or you could just be more careful plugging **** in. Small ports are going to wear out one way or the other if you aren't careful, and sometimes if you are simply due to manufacturing errors (Kindle Fire, I'm looking at you). Anyway, shut up.

And when you say cylindrical do you mean laptops? I've never seen a PC with a "cylindrical" connector unless you mean like PS/2 keyboards and mice which have been missing from just about every PC built in the last 10 years.

I think he means the power plugs on laptops. Which people reef on until they break the power plug off the circuit board internally.

USB 2.0 has 5v, ground, data + and data -

IF you put it in a round plug you would need four constant contact points. A ring inside a ring inside a ring.

USB 3.0 adds 5 more connections, Receive +, Receive -, Transmit +, Transmit -, and another ground. That would be too complicated.

I just wanna say, we're at the point where I've had to start ordering Micro USB cables online because all the ones I can find in stores are pieces of **** that go out in like a week.

Tendoboy was right and I was wrong.

I don't think I had any stock in wireless charging when this thread was first posted and now I own three of them.

Micro USBs were annoying, but I still have extra cables just in case.  I love that more and more things use USB type C.  But there is the one question of why haven't electrical outlets been revisited?  Like, almost all personal electronics can charge via USB type C.  I imagine a similar standard could be equally found for large electronics.

USB built into wall outlets is kind of a thing now. I've seen it a few places.
