The Switch 2 is beginning to pick up the pace a bit on releases with a couple of Summer Game Mess / Indie World veterans in Call of the Elder Gods and Outbound, but perhaps the biggest thing coming this week is its Geometry Wars: the beloved PC twin-stick shooter Sektori is making its way to consoles with Switch 2 among them. And based on the way people who played it on Steam talk, this might be an all-timer.

The OG Switch - in addition to picking up Call and Outbound - also sees another Indie World veteran in Perfect Tides: Station to Station and a couple of interesting games in the RPG realm, Quartet (for the turn based fans) and Nitro Gen Omega (for the strategy and possibly racing aficionados).

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: A couple of Archives games in NES-era shooter Magmax and Taito's classic action breaker Arkanoid. Sadly, no paddle controller for Switch yet.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: I'm not sure how playable a game focused on clowns would be in general, but I would assume it to be difficult even if the game's eShop page claims English support.

Amid a flurry of announcements, Nintendo announced their fiscal results for the 2025-26 fiscal year overnight, the first annual results of the Switch 2 era.

All figures quoted in yen, with USD$ figures at market rates (US$1 = ¥156.7) provided for comparison only.

Financial results:

Revenue: ¥2,313bn (approximately $14.76bn) for the year, ¥407.117bn (~$2.6bn) in fourth quarter

Operating income: ¥360.1bn (~$2.3bn) for the year, ¥59.707bn (~$381m) in fourth quarter.

Ordinary income: ¥542.1bn (~$3.46bn) for the year, ¥86.258bn (~$550.5m) In fourth quarter.

Digital sales: ¥407.6bn (~$2.6bn) for the year, ¥125.6bn (~$802m) in fourth quarter

Mobile/IP: ¥73.5bn (~$470m) for the year, ¥19bn (~$121.25m) in fourth quarter - note the Mario Galaxy movie impact is limited at best

Hardware

The Switch 2 shipped 2.49m units for a new lifetime total of 19.86m units: it will pass the GameCube by the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2026-27.

The Switch shipped 550k units across OLED, regular, and Lite for a new total of 155.92m units.

Software - New

Both Pokemon Pokopia and the release of Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green reported sell through of 4m copies in respectively 5 and 6 weeks, with Pokopia reporting shipments outside Japan (where The Pokemon Company is the publisher) of 2.41m copies. Super Mario Wonder - which released a Nintendo Switch 2 edition at the end of the quarter - shipped 1.4m copies during the year.

Neither Mario Tennis Fever nor the surprise Switch 2 edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition reported over 1m shipments (the latter releasing at the tail end of the last fiscal year on Switch).

Software - Catalogue

Mario Kart World continues to lap the field on Switch 2, with shipments of 14.7m units in the first ten months, more than 3x the shipments of Donkey Kong Bananza (4.52m). Kirby Air Riders reached 1.87m. Pokemon Legends Z-A across its two releases shipped a total of 12.79m (3.94m Switch 2, 8.85 credited to Switch).

For Switch games, the top 10 is here: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now at 71.08m, the release of a Switch 2 edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has it within a few thousand copies of 50m, and Mario Odyssey is the fifth 30+m seller on Switch. The Mario Galaxy re-releases were split out to 2.76m Galaxy 2 and 2.66m for the original.

2026-27 Estimates

• Net sales: ¥2,050bn
• Operating income: ¥370bn
• Ordinary income: ¥430bn
• Switch 2 hardware: 16.5m
• Switch hardware: 2m

The reductions compared to 2025-26 is due to the hardware price increases due to production and logistics costs skyrocketing.

One of the longest-tenured developers at Nintendo is about to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

A notice of "Personnel Change of Company Officers" (PDF link) issued today by Nintendo lists Takashi Tezuka as retiring from the position of Executive Officer at Nintendo on June 26, 2026. As Tezuka was largely retired from day-to-day operations at Nintendo, this signals his final retirement from the company.

The now 65-year old Tezuka has worked in various roles at Nintendo for more than four decades, with his first known credits being the arcade version of Punch-Out (1984) as a sprite artist. His breakout role at Nintendo came the following year as an assistant director on Super Mario Bros., working under Shigeru Miyamoto and alongside composer Koji Kondo, and he would work in programming roles throughout the era of the Famicom and Super Famicom before transitioning to management following the 1996 launch of Super Mario 64.

There's a lot of warning but the price of the Switch 2 is going up as feared.

Alongside their fiscal year financial statements issued this morning was a notice of price increases to begin on September 1st. The United States, Canada, and Europe will all see the price of the Switch 2 increase by $50/€30 (on the My Nintendo store only due to lack of manufacturer's suggested retail price), making the Switch 2 cost US$499.99, C$679.99, or €499.99.

The sharpest and most immediate price increases are in Nintendo's home market, as the price of the Japan language-only Switch 2 will increase to ¥59980 (from ¥49980). The original Switch models will also increase in the region at the same time, as well as Switch Online subscriptions increasing beginning July 1. Even Nintendo's traditional hanafuda cards will increase in price to "open price" depending on production costs.

Following a Nintendo Direct with five minutes of warning on social media, a new treatment of Star Fox 64 has been announced for Switch 2. Simply known as "Star Fox", the game will release on June 25, with pricing TBD. The game's eShop listing has the game at US$49.99, C$69.99, €49.99, and  ¥5480 for digital with commensurate increases for physical.

The core gameplay is a remake of Star Fox 64, but with added mission mode options for previously completed stages and a new opening cinematic featuring the original betrayal of future (former?) F-Zero pilot James McLeod. A 4v4 multiplayer mode pitting Star Fox and Star Wolf will be available including online play, and GameShare is supported for up to four systems locally. Additionally, a co-op option is available using one Joy-Con for flight controls and the other in mouse mode for combat, and the N64 Nintendo Classics controller is also available as a control option.

The game's GameChat function will also include an option to use the core Star Fox team as avatars.

So this is what a light week looks like, huh? Sure, the Switch 2 is quiet - a Switch 2 edition of the Blood (FPS) remake and Annapurna's Mixtape which you might recall from the March Indie World. Meanwhile, there's over 40 game-like substances on the Switch and yet I'm having a hard time finding one for your consideration beyond Kill It With Fire 2 from tinyBuild. Syrenne, help.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Another Indie World game in Inkobini (both Switch 2 and Switch), plus an Archives doubleheader of Namco's Cyber Commando (Arcade) and Rohga: Armor Force from Data East. Devolver also published something called Possessor(s), and I'm assuming there's a reason for the parenthetical.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: Some of the stats in Deep Dungeon are intelligible, but the commands in a dungeon crawler RPG are NOT. I'd say no.

Nintendo has dropped a late Super Mario Galaxy 2 update with a bit more to the story.

The 1.4 update includes a new story chapter to the storybook: earning a star after unlocking the "Final Chapter" in the book will show the story.

Updates to resolve issues on Switch 2 and Switch are also included in the patch.

The biggest Pokemon Go in person event is bringing a lot of bonuses out from behind a paywall for the game's 10th anniversary.

The global Pokemon Go Fest (this year on July 11 and 12) normally offers a paid ticket for shiny boosts, early access to debuting Mythical Pokemon, additional raid passes, and other bonuses: this year, the "ticket" will be given to anyone who logs in to play during the event period. This does not prevent a "Go Pass" (paid battle pass) from being offered, but all players who play will receive research to catch the mythical Zeraora. Previous major events have run 10 am to 6 pm local time, but this year's will be extended to 7 pm so as to allow for three three-hour blocks of wild spawns.

Each Go Fest traditionally offers a brand new ultra-powerful Pokemon, and 2026's is the debut of Mega Mewtwo - the last Mega Pokemon prior to Legends: Z-A to come to the game. Mewtwo's two Mega Evolutions will have different "Mega Energy" requirements, and this will apply retroactively to Charizard (the other dual mega from the original set) and will presumably apply to other split Megas like Raichu and Lucario when their Z-A introduced Megas come to Pokemon Go.

It looks like Nintendo films are accelerating their release cadence.

A schedule released by Universal Pictures Spain reveals an "UNTITLED ILLUMINATION/NINTENDO EVENT FILM (APRIL 2028)" scheduled to premiere on April 12. This will follow the Mario Galaxy movie on April 1 this year, and the Legend of Zelda movie on May 5, 2027: the Illumination partnership seems to indicate a Mario movie.

As with the first two Mario movies, this film will land just ahead of the Easter weekend.

The fourth weekend of the Mario Galaxy movie will see it hit some major marks, even if it didn't maintain its lead in the US for an entire month like the first one did.

In the US, the animated feature took in $21.2m for its fourth weekend, as its screens were reduced by a little over 10%. Its new US box office was roughly $386.5m, while worldwide - including its opening weekend in Japan - has brought the film to about $831.5m: it should reach the $400m mark in the US and thanks to the Golden Week holidays in Japan, should easily reach $900m and potentially become the second billion dollar worldwide theatrical release helmed by Nintendo.

The biggest cause of the reduction in receipts was a Michael Jackson biography ("Michael") that made a record $97m in its opening weekend despite attracting controversy for completely omitting the late singer's accusations of child abuse. The forthcoming weekend sees a double-digit film release schedule, with potential competition in a sequel to "The Devil Wears Prada".

Annapurna is the latest publisher to announce their intention to heavily support Switch 2.

The indie publisher released a "Portfolio Trailer" earlier today which confirmed a pair of brand new Switch 2 editions available today: Sayonara Wild Hearts (2019 on original Switch) and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (2024). The upgrades are no cost for existing owners, and Sayonara includes a "Remix Aracde" mode that was featured on other platforms but never came to the original Switch version.

Additionally, a pull slate of games both old and new were shown:

• A Switch 2 Edition of Stray (May 28)

The summer just got a little fresher for Switch 2 owners.

Nintendo has posted a trailer in the Nintendo Today app for Splatoon Raiders, which confirms a July 23 launch. Originally revealed last year alongside a Switch 2 update for Splatoon 3, the game was largely radio silent until today.

The trailer confirms a single player focus, with the created character finding treasure and battling enemies with weapons both familiar and new (including a turret).

A new round of Amiibo - with Splatoon 3 hosts Shiver, Frye, and Big Man in Raiders-themed outfits - will be available the same day.

It's another weekend of beaucoup de bucks for the Mario Galaxy movie, and the Nintendo / Illumination partnership has reached another major milestone.

The US box office returns for the third weekend of the co-production totaled roughly $36.5m to be the top film at the box office, and the Super Mario Galaxy movie has now made roughly $365.7m in the US alone since its April Fools Day launch. Worldwide, the total gross estimates at $750m, meaning the two Mario animated films combined have made more than US$2b in their theatrical runs.

The next major event for the Mario Galaxy movie is its Japanese launch this Friday (ahead of the Golden Week holidays): the original movie made the equivalent of $100m just in Japan in 2023.

There's one game that will drive the conversation this week as the maker of Vampire Survivors is pivoting to the deckbuilding roguelike, so expect to hear a lot about Vampire Crawlers from certain outlets later this week. Apart from that, we have a game which of course came out today in Jay and Silent Bob's Chronic Blunt Punch (Neal review), one where filing off the serial numbers on Saint Seiya is one of its minor offenses (Jordan review), and yet the second best game of the week might be friend of the pod Artdink's Aquanaut's Holiday - and I can't find out personally. Yippee.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: The Telltale (in name only?) Expanse adventure game came to Switch, while the Archives brought Konami GT - take a wild guess what that is - and Ishin no Arashi which is an untranslated Koei strategy game from the Famicom. (Sorry, an "8-bit home console".) Remember, the odds of Atlantis no Nazo from Console Archives are slim, but never zero.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: The eShop description for Adventure of Randar says it's in Japanese.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie continues to chug along.

Estimates of the US box office have the second weekend of the animated feature tracking for $69m US, and an 11-day total of approximately $308.1m. Internationally, the film has taken in an estimated $320.6m through Sunday.

Mario Galaxy was not the only game related property to hit the box office top 10 this weekend: the movie based on indie game Exit 8 began a limited engagement (495 theatres, while the Mario Galaxy movie has more than 4,000) and took in an estimated $1.6m.

We've got another half-century opening on the eShop this week, headlined by your choice of a new Capcom (who have been, quite frankly, carrying the Switch 2 this year) property with Pragmata, or a rare first party Switch OG title in the form of viral purpose to have the Switch app on a smartphone in Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream. Both systems also get the culinary RPG Dosa Divas, but the Switch 2 is the only one that gets Mouse P.I. for now.

Apart from the game that hid Bill DeMott following his 2015 sacking from WWE for abusing women (you might remember him as Hugh Morris), there's also a first Western release of Spica Adventure from Taito.

Unfortunately, the streak of Pokemon games that came out relatively clean at launch has ended at two: although Legends: Z-A and Pokopia were solid, Pokemon Champions has come out with more issues than Nintendo Power had. Some of the issues are on the Japanese language support page, some aren’t, but they’re expected to be fixed in patches quickly.

We should also clarify that Champions was developed by ILCA, who Pokemon fans know as the poor suckers who were assigned to bring the relatively fecal Pokemon Diamond and Pearl to Switch in 2021 and instead of polishing it, lit it on fire. There’s also the issue that Champions is intended to be used for official competitive pay starting not at the San Francisco (somehow) World Championships at the end of August, but at a regional tournament in Indianapolis… May 29-31. And the last pre-Worlds major tournament, the North American International Championships, are two weeks after that. So this had to get out now. But now ILCA’s on the clock, and probably need some help triaging the myriad of bugs that emerged on day 1.

That’s where I come in. As not only do I have experience with Pokemon, but I’ve worked in helpdesk roles for most of my adult life and have had some of my own tire fires to put out. So let’s dive into the biggest issues facing Champions on day 2 and see if we can give the devs some guidance on what needs to be fixed, and what can be backported to the main series.

Display Issues: On Switch 2, Game Does Not Display At Full Res Unless Undocked And Redocked

Although this is a Switch 2 specific issue, the game’s overview trailer did emphasize that the game should run at a higher resolution on Switch 2. So this is definitely a black mark on the game given that a large portion of the competitive community shifted to the Switch 2 in order to play Scarlet and Violet at a framerate above “snail”.

In reality, though, it may not be as much of a priority. There’s a known workaround (undock and re-dock), and at Indy / San Francisco they’ll be moving from station to station for battles anyway. If it can be fixed quickly, do it, but if more time is needed then make sure you get this right for regulation M-2. Ticket Priority: Medium

Unspecified Pokemon Home Transfer Issues

Since the only relatively free way to get Pokemon into the game is via Home transfer, this was the highest priority - and it’s already been resolved. Ticket closed.

Mega Evolution Issues

This covers two issues: an inability to select moves after highlighting the Mega Evolve option in battle, and turn order issues. Both of these are tied to unlocks either in the Starter Pack or in the premium Battle Pass, so Mega Evolution issues are explicitly affecting paid features and are high priority based on their placement in the support page.

Since Champions is the competitive return of the Mega Evolution system - we’ll get Z-A battles at Worlds shortly after we get a TCG Pocket bracket - this needs to be SOLID. Ticket priority: ASAP

Move Functionality Issues (Haze)

The lead singer of Korn might think Haze is the ****, but in Pokemon it’s meant to just clear stat changes. However, that refers to the effects from moves like Swords Dance or Screech, and although it did at one time have a “heal all of a user’s HP” effect, that was in the Sun and Moon games where it was a one time effect because it required a Z-Crystal. That functionality is NOT in the game yet. And also, Haze has 30 power points at base, or less power points than my Dragonite from the Starter Pack came with. (Ice Beam - 10, Fire Blast / Extreme Speed / Draco Meteor 5)

This needs to be fixed NOW, or Blastoise is going to be such a centralizing tank it’s not funny. Ticket priority: ASAP

Move Display Issues (Leech Seed)

In this case, the text of Leech Seed says the move takes 1/16 (6.25%) of the opposing Pokemon’s HP each round to heal the user’s Pokemon, when in actuality it does ⅛ (12.5%). The attack works as intended, it’s just the description is wrong.

Given that they have confirmed this is going to be patched - and it’s a typo fix, largely - this isn’t as big of a deal, but I hope they give Victory Point refunds to anyone who switched off the move because of the incorrect advertising. (Or just a flat refund of two move changes to everybody as an apology.) Priority: Low

Some Pokemon Display “Incorrect” Gender

The BlueSky post is one of the most famous examples of this bug, as the player is facing down a female Gallade - what has historically been a male-only species since its introduction in Diamond and Pearl. And honestly, I’m not sure why that restriction exists. Gallade (and the normally female-only Froslass) are the result of evolution with an item - the Dawn Stone - that was only added in Diamond/Pearl as well. And since they’re branches of existing evolutionary families where the other final evolutions have 50/50 gender ratios and can be gained by a normal level up, why not unlock the choice regardless of gender?

Unfortunately, the last time Pokemon had a canonically transgender family (caused by a baby with 75% female odds that evolved to a species with 50% female odds, meaning you were 1-in-3 to have a female transition upon evolution) they changed the rules starting with X and Y such that the gender of the baby was fixed afterwards. Come on, Big PIkachu. Say trans rights. Ticket closed - feature implementation

A Nintendo Today posting has revealed Rhythm Heaven Groove will launch on July 2. The Switch game was announced in the March 2025 Nintendo Direct but has been largely radio silent since.

A new trio of NES and Famicom games has been added to the Nintendo Classics library tonight, all from regular Nintendo development partners.

• The Tower of Druaga (1985 - Famicom) is the home console version of the original arcade game, designed initially as "fantasy Pac-Man" by Namco and is often credited as the first game to have dedicated doujin (fan created) strategy guides.
• Mendel Palace (1989-90) is a puzzle game which was one of the first games developed by future Pokemon main series developers Game Freak, in which the player must rescue a girl trapped either in her own dreams (NA) or from a jealous sister named Quinty (Japan, where the game is known as Quinty).
• Pac-Man (multiple US releases, 1984 in Japan) is the NES version of the original arcade smash and song inspiration. Originally published unlicensed by Tengen due to Namco not publishing games in North America for the NES, it would later come to the NES officially when Namco joined as a Super Nintendo licensor in 1993.

The Mario Galaxy movie is serving as a reason to offer a purchase incentive for its games.

Nintendo has announced a new deal today offering US$20 or C$30 off a purchase of a Switch 2 and the Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 release. Both physical copies and digital codes (via card) will be eligible for the discount, with choices based on the retailer: the deal will run from April 9 (Canada) / April 12 (US) to May 6 / 9.

With the retail copies retailing for US$69.99 and C$99.99, the discount would provide an option similar to the previous Mario Kart World and Pokemon Legends: Z-A bundles where a Switch 2 would come with a game for a $50/$70 premium.

Much like the games, the second Super Mario animated movie both didn't hit the heights of the original and yet still made boatloads of cash.

Estimates have the Illumination / Nintendo co-production making US$130.9m in its opening weekend, and $190m US over the five days since its April 1st launch. International take - notably not including Japan, where the film's release is tied to the Golden Week holidays - was approximately US$182.5m.

The 2023 prequel, which also launched over the Easter weekend, estimated $146.3m US, the five days since a Wednesday launch bringing in $204.5m, and $377.2m worldwide in the opening weekend.

Get your Incineroar and Amoongus ready because we're going to be dealing with the Society of Battle Connoisseurs this week with the release of Pokemon Champions, a game that might qualify me for my first Worlds in 2027 (assuming the tourney isn't in gestures wildly since I won't be able to enter the country). In Pokemon side story news, Colosseum and XD developes Genius Sonority are bringing The Denpa Men (F2P version) for the Switch 2, and "People of Note" is an RPG from Annapurna (version unknown) which bills itself as an RPG musical.

For the Switch, a busy yet quiet week apart from Champions (47 games), though WayForward is getting into the scrolling shooter realm with Sigma Star Saga DX.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Content Warning from Landfall (and Haste from the same dev), with the Legacy of Kain duology announced in Sony's last Direct-like substance also dropped. The Archives title was SNK returning with Master of Syougi... a shogi game. Not even CLOSE to translated.

Mario Kart World has snuck an additional update in before the end of the fiscal year with a new battle mode and other changes.

The headlining option is the Bob-omb Blast option being added to Battle Mode. Players can hold up to 10 bombs and adjust the distance of thrown Bob-ombs depending on how long the L button is held down.

The full patch notes (found here) also detail adjustments to Bullet Bill and the Boomerang among other items, and resolved some issues with Mega Mushrooms.
