But there is an ability that bypasses rain!

Is it the Falco Jump after beating the Divine Bird?

and now, presented without context

That is pretty awesome. Those darn Japanese! What will they think of next? Bombing Pearl Harbor? NEVER FORGET!

Still, the dedication to think up and pull that off is pretty darn impressive. I just encountered that paragliding minigame yesterday when I finally decided to climb that shrine and fill in that section of my map and quit holding off on doing so. And then I learned about the whole flying idea when visiting IGN this morning so seeing it all come together like that was impressive. It looks like the game has a limit of 10,000 meters and didn't expect anyone to surpass it. I also like that the end reward is just 100 rupees. A couple days ago, I lifted up a rock and found a gold rupee which is worth 300. I couldn't believe a gold one would be hidden like that. That player went through all that work and spent all that time and resources for 100 rupees and I did better just be lifting up a rock. I think I'll stick to my game approach...

Turns out I was wrong in the map I posted a few days ago on my exploration of Hyrule. I had only explored about half of the snowy peaks of the Gerudo highlands. Yesterday I went back to them to finish up checking over that landscape and finding all its hidden treasures. I did go back to the first Lynel I tried to fight that kicked my butt hard. Because of the cold weather, I still wasn't able to wear my best defense combination but most armor that I have is upgraded to the max with a few pieces still in the process of being upgraded so I still felt better with the higher defense I'd have than the first time where I fought him wearing the Warm Doublet which has basically no defensive value. While I did take a bit more damage at times than my other Lynel fights, at this point, it wasn't anything too serious to overcome and I got in about 4 flurry rushes which is a new best in a Lynel fight. My timing still needs some work but I'm doing better at dodging and anticipating the attacks. At this point, I think I've gone back and taken down every enemy that ever took me down or I couldn't beat the first time around. REVENGE!!!

However, when exploring the new part of the Gerudo highlands that I hadn't been too before I encountered another white-haired Lynel. However, this Lynel had a different weapon than the others I had fought up to this point. It was something called a Savage Lynel Crusher and it was more like a ball and chain weapon that a sword or spear they normally carry. That turned out to be one of the toughest fights I'd had in a while since a lot of the attacks were different and I wasn't at my best armor. It was a good thing I had some fairies on me because I needed a couple to save me at times and I had to start thinking more carefully about the battle again whereas I've been able to be a bit more careless about things up to this point. So, that was a highlight. I also encountered my first Frost Talus which also makes for a tricky fight against the Stone Talus enemies who have become very easy at this point. I finally rode a couple bears as well. Bears are tough animals to fight and ward off if they come at you so I try to avoid them but I discovered a better way to get rid of them is to paraglide on to them and mount them and work on soothing them (if you have enough stamina, of course). Once you've soothed the bear, just dismount and it will start running away on it own and that's the end of the bear. You scare it off and don't have to fight it.

I'm at 316 Korok seeds so over 1/3rd of the way there. I've maxed out my weapon stash so I still have my bow and shield stash to go. Probably going to expand my Shield stash to the max first since I have a lot break when trying to deflect Guardian lasers or in some of my Lynel fights so the more I can carry there the better. I wish I could carry more weapons though. People complain about weapons breaking and I was on the fence about it in the beginning of the game but now I'm kind of glad they do since there are so many great weapons I'm coming across from defeated enemies and treasure chests and I just wish I had room to carry them all instead of leaving them behind.

Speaking of my recent revenge tour, I went back to the first shrine I found that was a Major Test of Strength since I figured I should be able to overcome it now and had a lot of good weapons to use. Sure enough, it was pretty easy to beat at this point having played the Minor and Modest Tests and being familiar with the pattern. It gave me the Climbing Shirt allowing me to finally complete my Climbing Gear. (Wish I'd gone back to that shrine a whole lot sooner.) Then I though I better go to the other 2 Major Test shrines I discovered but they had no uniforms. Just some nice weapons I didn't have room for at the moment.

At this point, with so many Stone Taluses defeated, ore deposits collected and clothing (even the Jewellery which stevey is correct in saying is pretty useless), I decided to cash in a bunch of the ore I had and saw no need to keep saving. That was about 32,000 rupees there. I then went to the Hateno Tech Lab and paid for all the pictures to complete my Compendium. I was so disappointed to find out though that you can't buy the pictures for things you have already captured in your compendium. Had I known that, I wouldn't have been taking any pictures until just buying them all. The only thing that was mentioned was that if you replace an old picture with a new one, you can't bring back that old photo. You lose it forever. I was fine with that thinking I'd replace my stuff with the in-game stock photos but that is not the case. You can tell which ones are mine since they lighting is poorer or the image is bit more fuzzy or incomplete. However, despite buying out all the stock of photos, it turns out there are still some photos missing. The lab assistant mentions being puzzled as to why some images can't be added or that it is incomplete. Perhaps I need to beat Ganon to unlock those final pictures or maybe there is someone else I still need to meet. I know some of the pictures still locked are most likely bosses but some seem to just be the silver edition of common enemies. Not sure why those would stay hidden.

I also discovered that Spider Guardians don't move around in the rain. They just stand still during that kind of weather. That makes it easier to approach them or avoid them if you want to. We complain about the rain a lot (generally just because of the effect on climbing and it happening at a time when we are climbing) but when I saw that I thought to myself that at least the rain is good for something and I should post it and mention it to at least bring up one of the few positives of the rain effect. That mission is now complete.

I'm at 68 shrines complete although I have 12 others on my map I've yet to play. Right now I'm still working on maxing out my Stamina. I'm almost at 2 extra wheels added. I can't believe Nile Boogie wants to keep playing the game without more stamina. I understand the heart challenge but it's so nice to be able to run for longer distances and climb walls with a bunch of jumps than the slower pace of having one wheel at the start of the game. One thing I think Xenoblade Chronicles X still does better than BotW is the ability to just endlessly run and swim fast in that world. I do tire of the run then slow down for the meter to refill and repeat dynamic that BotW has in place.

Can't think if there was anything else I really wanted to comment on from my recent play sessions except I really think the game did a great job in designing the Lizalfos and how lizard-y they come across and how their fights can reflect that. Even though they may not be that difficult to defeat anymore, I was thinking to myself how well they were designed and crafted at one point during my play time.

I enjoy your updates a lot, Khush. Some thoughts!

I've actually never fought a Frost Talus, even though I always assumed they existed considering their Ignis Subspecies hanging out around Death Mountain. I'll be hunting one down myself in the future. My current goal is to mark all forty of each "Boss" variant on my map- and yes, there are forty Talus, Hinox, and Guardians hiding throughout the world, respectively. Not sure about Lynel, but the amount of those I've marked is already quite high. My current loot cycle is Lynels -> Talus -> Major Tests -> Guardians -> Hinoxes, since Lynel give you the most efficient weaponry for killing Talus, Major Tests give you the materials to kill Guardians, as well as weaponry for killing Hinoxes, which are extremely easy to kill and provide the more durable weaponry for taking out Lynels. I'm aiming for hitting 100,000 Rupees, maxing out my gear, and getting enough Koroks before I become sick of scouring the map for them and taking a break in preparation for the Summer Update.

Yes, and if you're looking to avoid spending rupees on Sheikah Gallery slots, I recommend it, as the Guardian Weaponry and each respective form of Guardian Soldier take up quite a few slots.

Also, Shyguy, that is the ability to which I'm referring.

Thanks Evan_B. Early on, after the first couple days of playing, I thought about doing a play journal in the Review section in which I would really get into detail and spoiler stuff that people could read if they wanted or come back to and see what another person's progression in the game was like compared to them but I'd rather be playing than typing so I just stick to posting a sort of update system in this thread instead to provide a glimpse into my experience. I think it's neat to see what others are up to and have been doing.

I didn't know Talus variants existed until I filled in my Compendium on Saturday evening and went through it to see what was listed and read up on some things. Like where a Frostspear looks like and where it might be found. The Hebra region is listed and it's one area I've kept pristine and avoided travelling into yet to help keep things fresh for when I need a change and am tired of exploring over areas I'm more familiar with. I guess I should have expected it since there are variants with the Pebblits or Mini-Taluses. Anyways, it kind of worked out well that after reading up on them since they were an enemy I hadn't seen, I was bit more ready for the encounter when it happened. It made the Talus a bit more difficult than ones where I've been able to climb to the top of it immediately and then destroy it with a stone smasher before it even can shake me off once.

I like your system of enemy progression. It makes sense. The way I play, Link is basically a walking scorched earth policy now. As I move through an area, I just fight whatever I come across and find and grab a bunch of the resources and move on. Thus, I'm never sure what enemy I'll come across and if I'll have a preferred selection of weapons to fight it. Having the max number of weapon slots helps make it likely I'll be carrying some of the right gear but I'll resort to whatever I have on hand. Lately, I've been realizing arrows can still make an effective weapon in close quarter combat as well especially since I've got a bunch of Savage Lynel and Royal Bows with higher attack powers and a heck of a lot of arrows from so many treasure chests I've uncovered. (Which reminds me. I discovered a treasure chest last night in the water that I could not pull up with Magnesis. I've never encountered a chest that wouldn't come up from its pull before but no angle seemed able to unearth it from the ground. I was very puzzled by the encounter and can only wonder if it is tied into a side quest I've yet to come upon or if there's something about Magnesis I haven't learned yet.)

Frankly, I prefer using Ancient Arrows on Guardians and just ending those encounters faster. Fighting them doesn't seem to improve my chances of getting an ancient core so I'd rather stasis hit the thing to get an accurate eye shot and move on. However, when I do that or jump from on high and slow-mo aim at an eye, it reminds me of the very first glimpse we had of this game back in 2014, I think. That little glimpse actually told a lot know that I've played so much of the game and understand it. I've been meaning to watch it again to see if I recognize the area and how much of that early footage is accurate but I've come to appreciate just what was going on in that trailer and why it was chosen as a first glimpse. Also, I was reading your review today since I felt there probably wouldn't be that much you might still be able to spoil on my at this point. Writing this at the moment just made me think that I feel the Spider Guardians sort of take the place of Darknuts in this game. While they may not be as difficult as that easier Lynel tier you envision, they have the HP, Armor and deadly enough attack to make me see them as an idea of what a Darknut in this game could be like.

I didn't know there were 40 Guardians out in the world. I knew there were 40 of the Talus and Hinox varieties because I was reading about the game completion rate awhile ago and it mentioned that there were miniboss medals of honor that you can earn for defeating each one at least once although doing so doesn't count towards your completion rate. Since Guardians aren't considered a miniboss, I'm not sure there is anything for them but maybe there are still 40 of them. I guess if you are looking for them I could always list the ones I've encountered in case you are wondering but I'm sure there are faster sources on the internet to do that and you may have encountered much that I have as well.

Nah, one of the reasons I burned through the game at such an insane rate (which is also the reason I'm stuck in the current loot cycle) is because I didn't want to have any information about the game spoiled for me, and I wanted to see how far I could get on my own. I managed to get 113 Shrines without needing a single hint, so I'm pretty happy about that.

This one? I've tried getting it out by using stasis+magnesis and nothing works. It might have something to do with the future DLC but it's probably a glitch.

I had a lot of fun last night doing something though I haven't seen it mentioned here so I'll spoiler it.  It has to do with the Fang & Bone.

The Fang & Bone sells masks for enemies so that you can trick them into thinking you're one of them.  This is a LOT of fun to exploit and a good way to skip past enemies if you're not in the mood to fight.  Last night I got the lizalfos mask.  I'm exploring the Gerudo dessert which is just crawling with them.  Now with the mask on I can just wander around with no worry.  The lizalfos' reaction is pretty funny too since they spot you and then look a little confused and come up to inspect you in detail.  Hell, it even works on the lizalfos skeletons that pop out of the ground!  I was not expecting that level of detail!

I also like how these masks look since they're very unconvincing and blatantly homemade but the enemies are still dumb enough to fall for it!  Ha ha!

I think there is a limit of 100 stamps so I don't think everything can be stamped on the map.

Can you repeat the Tests of Strength? I would love to try my hand at a few of them again to see how I have progressed.
I believe those Guardians reappear after a blood moon.

People complain about weapons breaking and I was on the fence about it in the beginning of the game but now I'm kind of glad they do since there are so many great weapons I'm coming across from defeated enemies and treasure chests and I just wish I had room to carry them all instead of leaving them behind.
Yeah, I've almost always had a full stock of weapons on hand so I can't say I fully understand the complaints about weapon breakage. It makes me think those people must be playing the game in a completely different way than I am.

However, despite buying out all the stock of photos, it turns out there are still some photos missing. The lab assistant mentions being puzzled as to why some images can't be added or that it is incomplete. Perhaps I need to beat Ganon to unlock those final pictures or maybe there is someone else I still need to meet.
I think there are at least some photos that you can't buy until you've found that item or beast in the wild. I think the buy option is there if you forget to snap a photo, or can no longer find that item or beast. You don't like taking your own photos though? I'd have rather filled it out myself, but unfortunately there were some middle-tier stuff I missed taking a photo and I can't seem to find them in the world anymore.

One thing I think Xenoblade Chronicles X still does better than BotW is the ability to just endlessly run and swim fast in that world. I do tire of the run then slow down for the meter to refill and repeat dynamic that BotW has in place.
I agree, Link has always felt slow in the 3D games but with the size of this world, his slow speed really becomes a problem with how long it can take to reach the next point of interest. Horses are an option for some areas but they're pretty limited and clunky to be of much use. I'm not sure how to balance faster movement for Link, but it's certainly something I'd like to see. To be fair though, slow character movement is a complaint I have about a lot of games.

I think with movement speed they really need to allow you to summon your horse from any area that is open enough instead of needing to be in the vicinity, it isn't a perfect solution but it would help. WIth that said though the fast travel system is generous enough that once I adventured to a shrine or tower it really helped traversing it since you can easily go to various points, and with the towers you can actually glide off allowing you to survey things from the sky.

Weapons breaking, yeah I am in the camp that I have little issue with them, as I've said before it helps to partially solve an issue with more open ended games, which is making each weapon feel useful instead of just junk to sell or something. In BOTW, at least for me, I still looked forward to finding weapons even later in the game so I could replace another one I had or further balance out my collection, it also motivated me to find the korok seeds which in itself helps drive exploration. If I were to make any change it may be including legendary weapons that can at least be repaired, or just go away temporarily. Beyond that though I've grown to like the weapon durability system in the game, it is something different and I feel in the end it motivates exploration which is a good thing IMO.

Looks like the new patch destroys the arrow farming strategy (let riding bokolblins shoot at you and pick up arrows).  I never did it, but I don't like the idea of messing with things like that or stasis/magnesis inventions in updates.  One of the fun things about games is seeing all the creative exploits people come up with, particularly in speed runs.  Speaking of that, the speed runs for this game are already great.

The other day I glided into an area full of riders and landed in a tree.  The riders circled the tree and fired arrows but couldn't seem to hit me, instead peppering the tree full of arrows which I collected.  This was probably Monday so I'm guessing that's post-patch unless another patch just came out.  This wasn't an attempt on my part to exploit anything, I just stumbled on it.  Though dodging arrows, usually from standing opponents, and then collecting them has been a common strategy of mine to stock up on arrows.

The typical form of the infinite arrows strategy is to stand in an open field.  After the patch, the arrows just disappear after a small set limit, from what I've read.  It could be that you have unintentionally found a way to do it post-patch.

Near finishing the game, I ended up with around 30K rupees of random materials to sell, so I just started buying out all the arrows I saw.  I think that when playing the game, I was too afraid to sell my materials or spend money on consumables.

Defeated my 3rd Divine Beast. After almost being broken by Thunderblight Ganon, Fireblight Ganon was a walk in the park. Dodging him proved to be pretty easy and I could wail on him with ease with my slightly overpowered weapons. The dungeon wasn't that bad and when I got stuck it was probably due to my own stupidity. Granted I was playing late at night and was very tired.Still, I can't help but feel that there's a pre-determined path to these boss fights and by making Thunderblight Ganon my second Divine Beast fight I was skipping ahead to a much tougher battle. It's only a minor nuisance really, and I'm not the one to complain about overly easy bosses.

My Road to Personal Completion
- 3/4 Divine Beasts
- 69(hehe)/120 Shrines (with 6 Shrine Quests still pending)
- Map Completed
- 9/12 Memories Recalled
- From the Ground Up side quest - Gorons are now living in Tarrey Town, now to get more wood
- Calamity Ganon still on the loose...

There is very much a predetermined path, Soren, which you can see from the progression of the memories found in the game: Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder. When you have played them all, you'll definitely understand this progression, and if you purposefully didn't complete the Divine Beasts before fighting Ganon, you'd actually have to face all the Blights in that order.

Sounds about right. I was expecting more dynamic difficulty between them where bosses would be progressively difficult depending on the number you had beaten before reaching them (or the number of shrines completed) but that was probably way too much to ask from this game already.

Where does it show the total amount of Shrines and Korok seeds completed?

The loading screens show it in the top right corner.  If you need to check it, teleport somewhere.

It's asinine that "teleport somewhere to view information that could very easily be shown in the pause menu" is even a real suggestion. As brilliant as Breath of the Wild, it still does some weird stuff like this.

For better or worse, this is still a Nintendo game.

Let's face it, it's a screen you use a lot.
