Title: Switch Pro Contoller
Post by: nickmitch on March 13, 2017, 05:26:10 PM
Hey, guys (and gals).

Wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on the Pro Controller and maybe get a discussion going.

Hopefully the poll has enough options.

There is some talks in an update they will allow the wii u pro controller to be used as well. Which is interesting, because they don't appear to be much different.

Switch Pro Controller is excellent even though the price is absurd. I had a gift card from work which worked out for me even if it doesn't change how I feel about the price. I also bought an extra AC adapter that is also absurdly priced. I deemed it a necessary purchase because I change both the controller and console without unplugging the dock.

I think I still like the Wii U Pro controller's analog stick placement a little more, but I get why Nintendo changed it (the right Joy-Con wouldn't work otherwise). I'd give the edge to Switch Pro Controller because it has matte finish, larger face buttons, and HD Rumble. Missed opportunity not coloring the face buttons like New 3DS though.

Hmm, I doubt it. Wii U Pro Controller is missing key features. More importantly, Nintendo benefits immediately from focusing on Switch as a fresh start. Better to just not bring up Wii U whenever possible.

I almost forgot I had a Wii U Pro Controller.  Pulled it out, and they're quite a bit different.  The grip and feel are better on the Switch Pro, IMO.  Main things would be the size of the Z-buttons, placement of the right analogue stick, and the size of the face buttons on the Switch Pro.  Almost forgot how much I liked the Wii U Pro Controller, but the stick placement made it seem designed for FPSes, which. . .yeah.

Speaking of the button size, that's one of the things I really like about the Switch Pro Controller.  But that's mostly stemming from direct comparisons to the JoyCon.

It is just too expensive for now.  When the price drops, I will likely get one.  I have adapted to the JoyCon for Zelda, with the benefit being the ability to hold my hands at different angles.  The main thing I miss is the D-pad.

The Switch Pro Controller is my favorite traditional-style gamepad I've ever used. I've found myself playing Switch on the TV more than I thought I would just because I love that controlelr so much.

I got to try it for a bit and really liked it, but I just can't justify the purchase right now. I have a feeling Splatoon 2 is going to benefit from it significantly and I'm going to play that game a ton, so that's likely when I'll pick one up.

The Switch Pro-Controller is a million times better than the Joy-Cons by nearly every metric. I hate that I keep having to spend extra $$$ on controllers because Nintendo feels the need to re-invent the wheel with every gen. The fact that they need to keep making  "traditional" pads por their consoles should be enough of a hint that this won't end well...

That's overstating it, I'd say. If you're playing a single player game in TV mode, it's the best option, but the joy-cons definitely have their advantages, and the biggest selling point of the system in handheld mode wouldn't work nearly as well without them.

Your problem isn't really with Nintendo then because every console maker does this.

In fact, I think Wii U may be the first time a console maker expected people to regularly use its previous generation controllers on its new hardware. Nintendo Land was built around players using the Wii U Gamepad and Wii Remotes. Then, Nintendo quietly admitted most people didn't want to use either controller anymore.

I don't care at all about handheld mode. I'm playing it on my lunch hours mostly for the novelty factor but in a month or so it'll stay anchored to the dock almost all the time. I already find the small travel distance of the Joy-Cons sticks to be annoying, plus the lack of a D-Pad, plus the general uncomfortable nature of holding it as a handheld.

Huh? The controller that came bundled with my PS4 has worked perfectly for the year and a half I've had it. My beef isn't with having to buy new controllers every console generation, it's with having to buy an extra "traditional" pad because the main controller solution Nintendo offers for their machines is lacking when it comes to the way I want to game. But I already knew I was adding that cost when I purchased the Switch.

I honestly don't think I would be playing the switch as much as I do without the Pro Controller. It's so comfortable and fits my hands very well. My only wish is that the triggers were analog.

Price is the only problem with the pro controller.  I think the fit feels like the better parts of the PS4 and Xbone controller, with nice big face buttons.

That said, I think I somewhat still prefer playing with a joycon in each hand, at least if i'm just exploring or shrine hunting.  Something more relaxing about being able to just rest my hands at their sides.

Yeah, after my hands adapted, I prefer split controls for most things.  The sticks aren't bad.  Much better than the 3DS circle pads.

You forgot the option "I can't seem to buy one because they are sold out in my area and I refuse to pay inflated prices for an already pricey item".

Cheapest I have seen it is $90 on Amazon. Wish I had pre-ordered one with my Switch, but that's water under the bridge.

They were in stock at Amazon for the standard price earlier today, but it seems like they've already shot back up.

Nintendo can't even keep controllers in stock. They really need to get someone on board who understands production better. This is beyond strategic shortages when it has been going on for years. The NES Mini still can't stay in stock longer than 10 minutes, and it's controllers are hard to come by as well.

The Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii Classic Controller were like this early on as well. For whatever reason, Nintendo always underestimates demand for this kind of thing.

I lucked out. There was one Best Buy in the area that had some Pro Controllers on launch day. I'd like to get another one eventually. I hope Nintendo releases them in blue.

Sadly, there are no carrying cases.

I'm surprised at the lack of availability on the pro controllers.  I would've thought Nintendo shipped them 1:1 with the consoles, but maybe that wasn't enough or they just under shipped.

They probably assumed most people would not need to buy one right away because the system comes with "two controllers". Just realized we have been hoping for a console that packs-in two controllers for a long while, and the Switch finally -technically- delivers.

Hey, screw this poll. Some of us can't even get our hands on the things, let alone justify the price. It is interesting to hear all of your opinions, though. I was very enamored with the Wii U Pro Controller, so to hear that this is even better is surprising.

There's an option for that.

But if you NEED to be difficult, Khush added one. :P

I chose the "too expensive" option, because it was the cost of the pro controller that made the Switch a wait-to-buy for me. I'm very excited by the Switch and will almost certainly own one at some point. However, I already own a 3DS with hundreds of hours of un-played games. The main justification for buying a Switch now would be the on-tv play, and not having a pro-controller is a non-starter for me in that regard. $300 was probably the ceiling I could justify, especially since I will need to factor in a very large sim card too. $400 and it starts competing with purchases like a PC or flights to Europe or South America.

I had something odd happen to my pro controller that made me return it. It is hard to explain but the left joystick got loose all of a sudden and felt like it was catching/grinding when I pushed it up near the top and moved it left or right. I'll get another when they are back in stock, which I hope is soon since I want to see if Nintendo can repair the joycons which have given me sync issues on multiple occasions.

They are available on amazon with prime @ MSRP, but they are back ordered until April 15th now. I'm getting one on the 10th through them. So glad they went and did this method, as it combats both scalpers (who would pay $100 for a controller?!?) and all of the false sellers offering it for $20-$60 and not shipping so they can steal your information.

Ended up finding one at the local Walmart (last one). Good thing too because the left joycon is having major sync issues and has clearly gotten worse since launch, it was to the point where pushing the joystick would barely register. So looks like we'll be sending the joycons to Nintendo which I've heard will fix or replace them (might as well get the right one replaced just in case).

I can take the joycon grip or leave it, gotten use to it overall but yeah the Pro Controller is the superior controller, it may even be my favorite controller out of all 3 consoles, it is so comfortable.

So yeah Nintendo's repair service is pretty amazing, as I stated previously I sent my left and right ones in with their provided UPS 2nd Day label, they got it Wednesday morning, that afternoon I got a notice that they shipped out the replacements via NEXT DAY, and well it has been sitting in our UPS Box since Thursday. That is impressive customer service and turn around time for a replacement/repair, so many other companies take weeks after receiving the product to get it back to you.

When I first opened the box and started tinkering around with the controller my first thought to myself was "You know I really want to play Smash Bros on this thing."

Upon pairing the controller up with my phone I continued to think to myself: "I really want to play Smash Bros. with this thing."

I may or may not have ordered an 8-bitdo wireless receiver (the one designed for the NES mini) with the intention of plugging it into a Wii Remote and basically making a bizzare wireless daisy chain that will generate enough input lag to make S-U-P-E-R cry and allow me to use the Switch Pro Controller as a Classic Controller so I can play Smash Bros. with the Switch Pro Controller.

Come to think about it, a decent amount of my Wii/Wii U backlog supports the Classic Controller (A few noteworthy examples being Sonic Colors, Xenoblade, Shovel Knight, and Yoshi's Wooly World). This thing's gonna get broken in long before I actually get a Switch :D

It felt a little odd at first, the sticks felt too tall. But I've gotten used to it, and I like the larger face buttons. I'm happy with the product so far. I hear it can be connected to a PC with bluetooth without any additional software/plugin, so that will be nice to try with some other games.

I picked up a Pro controller last weekend. It has become without any doubt my preferred controller for anything. I like it better than all other controllers. It just fits my hands perfectly, and now I leave the joycons for the people with smaller hands.  :)
