Episode 268: Thirty Hours of Freedom
« on: November 27, 2011, 01:02:25 PM »

Ladies and gentlemen, Jon Lindemann played Zelda for 30 hours this week. Let's have a round of applause!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/28533

While other podcasts take the week off for Thanksgiving, RFN continues its annual tradition of Black Friday recordings to bring you an uninterrupted dosage of Nintendo love! It is a short episode consisting entirely of New Business, but that's all you need when there are new entries in both the Mario and Zelda franchises.

We start with Lindy, because he has broken a streak of anemic gaming with a Skyward Sword blow-out. If you've ever wished Jon would talk more on the show, your time (and his) has come! But everyone has been playing the new Zelda, so it's a full group discussion of this excellent game. James is next with another Ace Combat 3DS update, plus some thoughts on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (the game). Greg wraps up his thoughts on Super Mario 3D Land, which Jonny and James have also been playing. Finally, Jonny tries to explain the glory of Skyrim from the perspective of a Nintendo fan who has a shallow history with Western RPGs.

We'll probably do Listener Mail next week -- let us know what's on your mind!

I'm sure if RFN was off this week Greg would do something light like replay Super Ghouls n Ghosts without dying while performing brain surgery.

Plan on listening to it later. Just finished listening to the 9 hour live show while playing Ace Combast: Assault Horizon Legacy, Sonic Generations and Super Mario 3D Land on my 3DS. I forgot to donate but I plan on doing it next year though. Money is tight so I really can't right now.

And I sent in an email that used Skyrim saying I had heard about it on every other podcast... oi.

Jon not only broke the shrinkwrap on Skyward Sword, but he put in 30 hours? My god...

It doesn't count if he played for an hour, paused the game, and left it running while he did other things.

On the subject of shields in 3D Zelda:

I've never used shields outside of puzzles. Maybe OOT scared me away, the first enemy I encountered that wouldn't fall to button mashing was the stalfos and they don't attack while you have the shield out so it doesn't help. Maybe that's why I die quite often in 3D Zeldas but I've never been one for blocking anyway, I dodge or make the enemy flinch by attacking, I never block because I can't handle the timing needed in melee combat.

The first boss in Skyward Sword isn't as hard as you guys describe him, 1. you don't need to waggle to get the caught sword back, you just need to pull upwards and 2. his hand tracks where you hold the sword which isn't connected to where your attack comes from. If you hold your sword to the right and swing further right you actually do a left-to-right swipe in the game. That's probably cheating but hey, it works flawlessly.

Am I the only one who has had a heck of a time with the controls in Skyward Sword? So far I have not been enjoying the game much because the system does not seem to recognize what I am telling it to do. The first boss took me at least a half hour to fight because I would motion one swipe and the game would interpret another. I wonder if I hold the Wiimote wrong or something?

oh god... My copy of SS is still in the shrink wrap and Lindemann has put 30 hours into it.

I may need to re-evaluate my life now.

You may need to recalibrate the controller mid-fight through the Inventory screen.  Skyward Sword tends to lose calibration at the most inconvenient moments.

I don't like it either but since the first phase is pretty cheesable and the second is mostly a matter of timing I still managed it after many tries.

Interestingly, I've fought 4 bosses and several mini-bosses since the battle with Lord Gihrahim, and I still think that was the most difficult fight. Certainly the hardest first boss in the series.

Agree and I still think the Skulltula are the hardest enemy in the game.  I've still died the most times the them than anything else in the game combined.

You mean the spiders? If you do an upward vertical slash, its weak spot will be exposed. They're pretty easy. And if the ones hanging from the ceiling give you grief, just cut their web line, or if you don't want to do that, hit them horizontally so they don't swing towards you, then get in close and stab that weak point.

I'm really enjoying Skyward Sword as well! And of course Super Mario 3D Land.

As Jonny was saying, this holiday season is pure Nintendo bliss with Mario and Zelda (and Mario Kart 7 releasing soon!). For me, all other games have fallen by the way side for the moment, EXCEPT for BIT.TRIP Complete. The BIT.TRIP games are incredible, and I'm playing for the high scores among my friends!

Haha, Greg is right, poison mushrooms are incredibly evil in 3D Land.
