Should be interesting to see what other folks think of it.

I'm talking about games with little to no publisher support. How hard to those bomb? 500 copies bomb or what?

And on the subject, how do we explain the sales of the "Carnival Games" series if clueless parents are supposedly prone to only go with what they know is good?

I think I need to see some games released on other consoles that sold just as poorly as Spyborgs did with the same level of advertising and visibility before I'll believe that this isn't a problem unique to the Wii.

No amount of playing "Wii Make Excuses" is going to change a simple fact...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsQBn3g4K4k

This game looks like it might be a lot of fun, comparable to other games in the genre, nice graphics, high production values. On a console with 50,000,000 sold, this game should've sold 50,000 copies by ACCIDENT. I'm serious: 50,000 people (.001% of the Wii userbase) should've picked this game up because they thought it was a different game or maybe just because they thought it would shut their kids up.

No amount of excuses are going to change the fact that something is inherently screwed up here. Here was a title which should've been a slam-dunk kids game and it hasn't sold because...it wasn't marketed? Dead Space WAS marketed and marketed like crazy (I've seen ads for it all over the net), and yet it STILL didn't sell well. What the hell is going on here?

What developer wouldn't look at the situation and shy away from developing for the Wii? Basically, you either release an established franchise that gamers are familiar with or you can expect squat for sales, EVEN with marketing. Or maybe, JUST maybe, you'll manage to catch the interest of the Wii core fanbase and your game will do semi-decently (like Muramasa did) but you still shouldn't expect sales like you could probably expect on other platforms.

Who can blame 3rd parties for not wanting to develop for it when you have such an uphill battle just to get your game NOTICED so you can break even on development costs?

TalkBack / Re: REVIEWS: Gravitronix
« on: October 28, 2009, 03:15:36 PM »
I have the game and I'm pretty sure I know why it was done like that...

In Bit.Trip, you're not playing against anyone so you're free to move as fast as you want, but in Gravitronix, the goal is to force an enemy to lunge to one end of their territory, then attack the other end. If players could move as fast as they could twist, the element of strategy would be gone and it would take two skilled players a ridiculously long time to kill each other.

Also, with your speed being limited, it encourages you to stop incoming projectiles by firing other projectiles at them (which is also a fantastic way to disarm explosive projectiles before they come in range of your shields).

Better not, Nintendo Life gave it a 2/10.

Actually, that's the worst review out there right now. It's getting mostly 7s from other reviews (reviews that have some similar concerns but don't insult the developers personally).

Everyone seems to agree that the robot telling you to take a break every two rounds is the worst part of the game.

I hear there's massive grind after level thirty or so.

I'll let you know once I get there (it'll probably be a while, though).

I've heard good things about LOTRO as well.

I honestly didn't plan on playing another MMO again until someone redefined the genre, but we're doing it together so that puts a choke on how much I'll wind up playing.

This way, we go through and explore the game together.

General Gaming / Aion...
« on: September 30, 2009, 02:48:47 PM »
So my GF offered to buy me a new laptop if she could have my old one and if I played Aion with her. We've never played an MMO together and god knows I could use a new laptop so I took the deal.

The best way I could describe the game is that it's like a version of WoW where the game actually makes an effort to keep up appearances. The game is thoroughly beautiful, has a much better art direction and overall a better ambiance than WoW ever did. They further add to the experience by giving you cutscenes involving your character from time to time.

But the real kicker is that, after level 10, you can fly in certain areas and it opens up exploration and combat on another axis of travel.

I'm only level 12 so far, but I can say that if you've done WoW, you probably wouldn't get THAT much new out of it. I kinda wish I had played Aion and NEVER played WoW, since Aion is basically an improvement on all fronts.

Every new Wii should come with a free 2000 Wii Point card, just to get people to figure out how the hell to use it and learn about the VC/WiiWare that way.

12
If they were going to throw rabbids into the game, they might as well have tossed decent Ubisoft characters in, like Rayman, Jade (from BG&E), Sam Fisher and Altaïr.

Still, the game could be pretty good. I'd need to play it first before I could say for sure. Shame they also didn't have more actual TMNT characters. No Rocksteady or Bebop? Bah...

General Gaming / Re: Why Dont Arcades....
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:30:23 AM »
Arcades are on a slippery slope to doom right now.

The problem is that arcade hardware is too expensive to justify the manufacturers making it without the prices being exorbitant, meaning that the arcades charge $2.25 per credit in some places (New York), meaning that no one in their right mind goes out to arcades anymore, meaning that fewer manufacturers will make arcade games, etc.

In the US at least, you not only have home consoles smothering arcades but you also have the fact that the arcades are too expensive, coupled with the fact that they're perceived as hotbeds for crime/gang activity. All that considered, it's no surprise people choose to stay home.

It's a shame, too, because I loved arcades as a kid and dreamed of owning one. That'd be suicide in this day and age, though.

Superman is the most overpowered pussy that it's not even funny.

He isn't even consistent in what he can and should do.

How can you be faster than a speeding bullet, see through steel, hear people talking from a mile away, fly, breathe in outer space, be indestructable, shoot lasers out of your eyes, breathe breath so cold you could freeze stuff, breathe so hard you could blow stuff away & have the strength to turn a car into a bowling ball or use a tank as a baseball bat, yet manage to let someone sneak up on you who is strong enough to move you with a punch and actually land the punch before you moved out of the way and kicked their ass before they realized you moved?

How is possible to be so overpowered yet such a fuckin pussy at the same time?

Superman is also a bitch to write for.

He has exactly two states he could be in:

1. Invincible.

2. Fucked.

Either he hasn't been exposed to kryptonite and he's invincible or he HAS been exposed and he's fucked. There's just not much dramatic tension, unlike Batman who must rely upon his wits or die a mortal death.

After our meeting, we actually had a chance to speak with another source who was able to show us the software guts behind the Natal, so that we could understand the method by which tracking is done. The box uses two sensors for input: a video camera, and an infrared camera (that light you see in the press photo is either power, or some part of the IR setup). The infrared data is used to gauge depth and the video camera movement, but it's the software Microsoft has developed which is really doing the magic. We were shown an example of the raw output of the system, which melds the two sources and then breaks them down into a wireframe of objects, a heatmap (for depth), and a point-map (which is akin to one of those hand imprint needle toys). The software merges all of this together to create a picture of movement in the room, allowing for some pretty crazy detail of what is going on.

I thought Natal had to be used in bright light.

Wrong? The demos I played of Natal were set up in dimly-lit hotel rooms, except for Peter Molyneux's Milo demo which was set in a bright room. Tsunoda said lighting was a non-issue for Natal. Maybe so, maybe not. But if it works in a dim room, that's not bad.

It still sounds like sunlight will cripple the thing...

I LOVED Geist. The gameplay was so creative and awesome...

Any game where you can possess a showerhead in a women's locker room to spook the girl taking a shower is just automatically a 20 out of 10.

1. I don't believe the technology will be that reliable. The wiimote can work in a pitch black room, so long as it can see the sensor bar. Natal will no doubt demand a large, well-lit area to play in, something that most homes just don't have.

Actually I believe that Natal uses infrared for depth perception and movement capture so the lighting of the room doesn't actually matter.

But every other point stands.

Are you sure? Last I heard, Natal had problems identifying people with darker skin, meaning that not only is Natal racist, but it suggests that it uses visible light instead of infrared.

That would also mean that ONE infrared source in the room would throw it off. What if there's sunlight coming in a window behind you (no shade will keep 100% of it out) or you play with a lamp behind you?

I admit, I haven't kept up with how exactly it works, but it sounds like it's going to be difficult to create an ideal situation for it.

That just doesn't make sense.  Are these big companies honestly going to sit around the boardroom table and agree to not support the Wii, and thus risk losing big money, because they hate Nintendo or they don't want to admit they're wrong?  Maybe some companies would do this, and some of the guys on top may let personal feelings affect their decisions, but ALL of them?  Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but they're big corporations that want to make money.  I would assume their decision to treat the Wii the way they do would involve some sort of business related decision, one that we may disagree with, but one nonetheless.

It makes more sense than you'd think.

Wasn't it Ubisoft who was using Wii game sales to fund their AAA list games on other consoles? What the hell does THAT tell you?

2. Marathon gaming sessions won't be possible. If EVERY input has to be a gesture of some kind, you won't be able to enjoy the multiple hours of gaming that we all know and love. With the wii remote+chuk, you can actually sit in all kinds of positions that you can't with a standard controller because your hands no longer need to be glued together. You can even put your arm around someone while playing. All you need to do most of the time is push buttons with very little motion required (often none).

Natal steers gaming in a direction that would only further remove depth. It's a neat novelty to be able to pretend to throw a football and see your character throw a football on screen, but without actual force-feedback, it'll never be anything more than a novelty and you'll quickly find that most people would just prefer to sit down with a controller to play the damn game.

I'll stop being a skeptic when I try the thing for myself and it works, despite me having someone walk in front of me mid-game, despite dimming the lights and seeing if it can still see me.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The Name Wii: Why I Don't Like It

I'm too much of an anglophile (which means I want to have sex with the english language) to not feel odd saying "It's out on the we." but I think the name did what it was supposed to do for Nintendo.

Last gen, people had a hard time telling the "GameCUBE" from the "xBOX". This time, there was zero confusion between the two.

Clearly the jokes were not jokes in any regards to sexual preference, or the jokes would not be on the site, since any talk of sexual preference is not allowed.  Since jokes like that are not allowed, and your posts exist, you were clearly mistaken over the content of your posts.

How's that?

This can be either be viewed as circular reasoning, or an argument that has no loose ends. ;)

He was bragging all over the forums about how he thru house parties where he got smashed and kept whipping out his poke-balls to all the pretty girls. When he showed us proof, it turned out only the ugly ones played with his Diglit

I'm tempted to make a joke about blue paint and making the "Wobuffet noise", but I won't.
