Club Nintendo Offering Downloadable Games as Rewards
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:26:05 AM »

Spend your coins on downloadable games at the newly redesigned Club Nintendo.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28696

A new Club Nintendo update gives users the ability to spend their hard-earned coins on downloadable games.

The games can be redeemed on the same page where coins are exchanged for other rewards. Users of Club Nintendo now have four downloadable titles to choose from. Super Mario Kart for 100 coins and Fluidity for 150 coins are the two titles available on the Wii. 3D Classics Xevious for 100 coins and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! for 150 coins are available to download for those with the appropriate portable. These rewards will be available until January 10. New titles will replace the original selection and are set to be determined by user feedback received for all downloadable games.

With this update to the Club Nintendo system came several other rewards. Nintendo themed notebooks, pen cases, and a set of Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Posters were added to the catalog.

The website itself was also given a make-over. Nintendo claims the new design, "offers a streamlined experience and more exciting ways to redeem coins." However, the new design isn't without problems. For instance, survey expiration dates no longer show the year. Furthermore, the site has been experiencing some loading problems. The site's technical support staff say they are working on resolving the issues.

If you have a family account, does one game purchase allow you to install it on the system of every member of the family or is it just for one system?

One system. I'm pretty sure systems themselves have no sense of "family account." Once you redeem the code, it can't be used again.

Can I assume this is for BOTH the Wii and the 3DS?

2 of the games are Wii games (1 Virtual Console and 1 WiiWare) and 1 game is a 3DS game, so yes.

I figured that, but...you know...wishful thinking. I only registered a family account to get extra coins for the multiples I own here and there. I'm no UncleBob(in terms of collection size), but someday...someday.

I thought that you couldn't get extra coins for registering a game on multiple family accounts, unless they changed that. You can still register the extra copies, but won't get coins for them.

You get coins for them, but what would be the point of registering them otherwise?

You can still register GCN and GBA games even though you don't get coins for them. I wonder when they changed it, because I know they used to not let you get extra coins for them.

For systems, they do the 3 month extended warranty if you register them.

I'm glad they've added games, though I already have what interests me out of the first batch. Looking forward to see what next month brings.

Their club.nintendo.com website seems to be utterly unresponsive from this end ( and it has been for 2 days).  Am I the only one seeing this kind of behavior?

It's been working fine for me today. A little bit slow during the afternoon... but definitely not unresponsive. Wish I could offer any suggestions to improve your situation.

I hope so. This is by far the coolest thing on Club Nintendo so far, and totally makes up for not getting cool stuff like the SNES-style Classic Controller.

(Others have different opinions, especially people who prefer physical goods... but free downloadable games are music to my ears! My only regret is that I spent so many points on stuff I don't really need. C'est la vie!)

Club Nintendo Europe doesn't really need this since you can buy generic points cards directly with stars, not just specific games.

Do they still put those crazy limits on this, like only X amount available at a time?
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

In NZ/AUS, there doesn't appear to be a way to exchange stars for points at this time. Never mind the fact the Stars to points to games ratio would be pretty bloody poor.

What is the conversion rate like in Europe? It feels like I asked this before and wasn't impressed with the Stars-to-Points conversion rate, but I honestly can't remember. Being able to buy whatever game you want instead of picking from a small list is pretty awesome though.

I still think this offer in North America is the hottest Club Nintendo deal going, even with limited selection.

I don't know if it has changed, but the rate used to be 4:1 (i.e. 4 stars would get you 1 point). Considering that a 2000 Wii Points card was about 20 euros ($26). You would be better off spending your stars on something else and just buying the Wii Points.
