I love the idea of F-Zero. It would be cool if the tracks were unlocked for racing after some story event.  Say you race through White Land 1 to capture a bounty and then it gets unlocked in race mode.  Once you unlock all the tracks for a cup you can race for that cup.  I'd go crazy for that game.

Nice review.  I'm loving Splatoon.  It's the best shooter I've played since Doom II.  But I guess I've always preferred movement focus instead of aiming focus.   Very high marks for Splatoon in my book.

Great article.  I totally agree with NX basically being an OS/archtecture.  To me this is a really good thing.  We should be able to upgrade our Nintendo device but be able to seamlessly keep playing our games with our current save data on them.  I don't think this will mean that Nintendo will release replacement hardware every 1-2 years.  Nintendo makes games that are meant to last for years and years, unlike Call of Duty and most current developers where they actually want you to stop playing after 1 year.  Nintendo's games age well.  I feel that Ice Climbers is more highly regarded now than when it was originally released.  Nintendo knows that playing their backlog is a huge strength and having the NX be an OS/architecture will allow consumers to experience a great many games day one of new hardware releases.  Nintendo thinks in the 5 year and longer span when they design games; they don't want their games to feel old after just a few years, instead they want them to feel like classics and keep their charm.  Nintendo won't need to upgrade their hardware every 1-2 years because they don't ride the hype bubble like other developers.  A similar 5 year window should still do Nintendo fine.

However, we might see them launch more varieties of hardware with a staggered release every year: small handheld (phone like / DS), large handheld (tablet like), small home console (Wii like), large home console (PS4 like).  Buy the system that meets your current gaming needs and you should still have access to a large number of excellent games that were made on the NX platform.  This will also allow Nintendo to compete against iOS, Android, and other gaming systems with strength.

Awesome ideas.  I love your inside scoop on the different teams Nintendo could work with.

I'd like to see Professor Layton actually!

Ice Climbers was in the game but they didn't work on the 3DS for some reason.  Sakurai-san said they couldn't debug the issues and had to drop the characters.  They wanted the same characters in both titles and they wanted them all to play exactly the same, so when they were dropped from the 3DS they were also dropped from the Wii U.  He said there were other dropped characters but didn't say which ones.  They still wanted 50 characters so they had to cheat and split out some: Zelda-Sheik, Samus-ZeroSuit, Marth-Lucina (originally she was just a skin for Marth), Pit-Dark Pit (also originally just a skin).  After splitting out the characters Sakurai-san said he liked the way they played on their own more, so he was happy with the move even though it wasn't originally planned.

I believe Sakurai-san commented on Daisy and said they didn't see her as having a very unique move set vs. Peach so she wasn't included.  I still think they should have given Peach a Daisy skin and called her as such during character selection and victory pages, much like Alph.

Sakurai-san said that Ridley could not be a playable character because he is much larger and scarier than most playable characters.  He said he would have had to dumb down Ridley to make him playable and that wasn't acceptable.  This logic also applies to Ganon not being playable.

I hadn't heard of this title previously.  It's sounds exciting and I'll probably be picking it up!
