TalkBack / Re: Investors Heavily Criticize Nintendo's Performance
« on: August 12, 2011, 01:28:47 PM »
The request to put games on mobile phones is idiotic but investors have a right to be angry with Nintendo: 3DS is performing horribly.  It's not just because of phones, either, since regular DS and PSP were regularly outselling 3DS prior to the recent price drop.

At the same time, Nintendo seems to have squandered the potential of the Wii (went from best-selling system ever to having trouble keeping up with PS3 and Xbox 360) and so far Wii U appears to reject the philosophy that made Wii popular.

Personally, I owned Nintendo stock until earlier this year; thank God I dumped it just before 3DS launched.

There might be enough "worst" games for a bottom 5 list.

I'm not really disappointed with VC pricing.  I only know of one store in my entire city that carries a serious number of last-century videogames, and they regularly charge $40-$60 for games like Super Mario Bros. 2.  Granted, many VC games could be found cheaper on EBay or at just the right flea market/pawn shop, but VC is more convenient and not that unreasonable.

Otherwise, I quite agree.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Clones
« on: November 22, 2007, 03:11:24 AM »
Add Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile and Smoke as clones of Guile.

No, really, I want Falco in there, even if he's just a clone of Fox.  I want Ganon to have a new moveset.  Luigi is already not that much of a clone, but feel free to change him even more.

If they want to throw in Ness as a Lucas "clone" (kind of backwards), I will be happy.  Marth would be good too.

New clones?  I'll take whatever they give me, I don't feel there's anything badly missing.  I kind of like the K.Rool suggestion.

Because the game is no good confirmed!  Palette swaps instead of alternate costumes?  Assist trophies that should be playable characters?  It's all downhill from here, folks...

Well, if you look at how the deal really works, MS is just trying to convert Halo 2 hold-outs over to the 360.  They have probably found they still have a large number of Xbox Live customers playing Halo 2 and are thinking, "these guys need to get with the program before they buy a Wii / PS3."

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread

I agree with the why-not Guitar Hero peeps here...if Guitar Hero sold, why not this?  The question is what does your  $70 peripheral game have to offer?  If we look at something like Eye of Judgement...let's be honest, card games are a limited, nerdy passtime: Sony is selling to a segment within a segment with that.

Guitar Hero works because who wouldn't like to be able to play guitar?  Almost any gamer can appreciate that, and a ton of "non-gamers" can too. Same thing with Karaoke games.  Why doesn't it work for Bongos or Maracas?  Here's a scientific chart to explain it:

Now does WiiFit have this mass appeal?  I think so.  I can't speak for Japan - maybe people are right that Japan doesn't care about fitness crazes, but unless you've lived there you probably don't know (I sure don't).  What the Japanese seem to like is crazy gadgets (4 million DS TV Tuners preordered, Nintendo can't believe the demand) and WiiFit falls into that category without being too niche.

It may all come down to how well Nintendo advertises it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What is "nintendo-like" quality?
« on: November 20, 2007, 04:51:46 AM »
I'd say Rare has a bit of an identity, but it's a good point.  Ubisoft's identity is...Tom Clancy?

Actually, I would agree that Ancel's games give Ubisoft a bit of an identity, but the clash between his games and the Tom Clancy games and everything else Ubisoft does leaves them wanting...I think having an identity, to some degree, means avoiding liscences.  Liscenced games are like fan-art: they can be great, but you're not likely to become known for them.

I'm a huge fan-artist, so I'm not bagging on them here...I'm just saying, that to create your own identity, you need to be working on your own projects.  Ancel games do have a certain flavour, and even something as simple as throwing King Kong into the mix dillutes that flavour.

Wow, I'm surprised!  I really thought this one was going to fix the problems of the original and be better overall.  Where's that Nintendo-like quality, Ubisoft?

Maybe they can get it right with 3.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What is "nintendo-like" quality?
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:54:08 AM »
So first we have the question of how to achieve Nintendo quality, and I really liked Kairon's answer on that: everything revolves around gameplay and design.  Don't sacrifice load times and framerates for awesome graphics.  Put the extra time in to squash all the bugs and fix weak points in the controls or level designs.  Voice actors and storyline aren't too important, as long as the writing is high quality.

Second we have the debate over whether it's even worth it to have Nintendo quality from a business perspective.  That's a very interesting question, and we can find companies like THQ that have basically survived by making clever use of liscences over the past 15 years.  Liscenced games are often of the worst quality because they usually have a 9-12 month development period, but they'll sell because kids and casual gamers don't know what they're getting.

There is something to be said about achieving Nintendo quality, business-wise, though.  Because of Nintendo's push for quality, it has about 20 liscences that have similar selling power to movies or TV shows, and Nintendo doesn't pay a cent for them.  Because of Nintendo's push for quality, the company is a household name.

It is possible to do it without quality, it's even possible to become a big player without quality - Electronic Arts certainly doesn't offer "Nintendo-like" quality (but it's better than most hardcore gamers give it credit for).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: RRR2?

I've gotten so much out of the original it's unbelievable.  Any time I play Wii with friends this game comes up.  I'm definitely interested in part deux, but it's going to have to wait until next year.

Sony is the new leader in hardware quality confirmed.

Seriously, though, Wii seems to be by far the most problematic piece of hardware Nintendo has ever put out.  I'm disappointed.

Reader Reviews / RE: Super Paper Mario
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:38:19 AM »
You have to go into Super Paper Mario without expectations.  Most people seem to either expect a great 2D platformer or a great RPG, of which it is neither.

It's a great Mario Adventure Game.

Reader Reviews / RE: Sin & Punishment Impressions
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:35:40 AM »
Time for some very belated replies and stuff...

Mario: I never tried option C, instead I just bought a classic controller.  It works beatifully.  I still think the music is so-so, but it improves over time.

DAaaMan64: If you haven't beaten Earth Mimicry by now I feel bad for you...basically it's just memorize, memorize, memorize.  One nice thing is that it shoots so much stuff at you that it's pretty much impossible not to earn continues.  I like that a lot, because I'd hate to get all the way to the end of the game and then lose all my continues on the incredibly hard final boss.

IceCold: It is kind of steep, but you have to think of this like finding a cool used game in a store...I'd easily pay $12 for a copy of Beetle Adventure Racing or Castlevania 64.  But I guess that depends on your interest in old games!

My final opinion on Sin & Punishment:

Great game.  Not that long, but it's hard enough.  The Classic Controller is 100% better, you could also try Option C as Mario suggested.  The rest of my original impressions stand, although I warmed up to the graphics a lot and music a little as I played.

General Gaming / RE: Better second console?
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:09:42 AM »
XBox 1 can do 720p for some games, can it not?  I'm cheap.  I won't pay $350 for something I see as my "second" system.

That said, 360 is probably the way to go right now.

Getting molested by spear men?  Did I just walk into 4chan?

How much time did you put into it, and how far do you think you've gotten? I'd really like to play this game.  Not enough to buy a PSP - I just don't play handhelds that much - but still...

Lost Planet on PS3: While it would be nice for Sony if the game looked better on PS3, I'm not sure harassing third-party developers is the right direction for it to go in right now.  Personally I think the only reason Sony hasn't already lost some third parties is because it truly knows it needs them...whereas Nintendo thought it could go it alone back in 1996.

Assassin's Creed: Meh.  It looks interesting but I can think of several 360/PS3 games I'd rather play.

Jade Whatsherpickle: Double meh.  I can think of several chicks I'd rather play.  Hehe.

"Traditional" gaming is dying over there.  Can WiiFit save home consoles?

Super Mario Galaxy could also turn out to be a long-time seller, but I'm skeptical about that.

WHAT A TWIST!  I managed to figure most of it out ahead of time, but not how the bouncing ball guy had done his trick.

Also, Tesla's name is being perverted by Silicon Valley to sell us electric sports cars.  His estate ought to be getting in on this action...if there's one to speak of.

I third these statements.  My "special place" is...well, basically the top of anything.

This is what sets the 3D Mario and Zelda games apart from the 2D ones for me.  Not that there are no areas like that in the 2D games...but they're rare and normally filled with a lot more danger!
