Title: Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update Available
Post by: tylerohlew on September 20, 2012, 10:02:25 AM

If it hasn't been made clear yet, Nintendo hates flash cards.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31812

Nintendo released a system update for the 3DS yesterday, one which brings further security against flash cards, and updates both the Nintendo Zone hotspot list and DSiWare firmware.

The update brings the system firmware to version 4.4.0-10U. Officially, the update includes "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience." The update is required in order to access the eShop.

While the update should be pushed out automatically, to update your 3DS manually, go into the System Settings menu. From there, go into Other Settings, then scroll over to System Update.

I thought that the 3DS wasn't hacked yet.

Was kind of hoping we'd get a decent update by now. It's been awhile.

From Nintendo's point of view, that's probably the point. Easier to update now with hope of preventing hacks than wait until things are busted wide open and then trying to pick up the pieces. Often it's already too late by that point.

Agree that it would be nice to see some value added with these updates. Not that I expect new content from Nintendo... but having something new would make updating more exciting.

(Still keeping my fingers crossed for a podcast management tool someday.)

I imagine you'll see something significant by the time MiiVerse rolls along.

Flashcards still work for DS software.

Well, a lot of them did. Until this update killed ALL of them. Some of the flaschart teams hadn't even released their updates yet for the LAST firmware. Argh.

The last update was a bit of failure, as I recall not all flash cards were blocked and some teams had their updates out within days. Although it is true that Acekard still haven't officially released an update. From the looks of it this update has blocked all the flash cards straight out of the gate. But I doubt the hackers have reached the limited of exploitable DS games to fool the 3DS with just yet. The system has such a big library. So I expect we'll see another update before Christmas, regardless of Miiverse.
It would be nice not to have updates with no appreciable user benefits every couple of months though, or better still, if they started to bundle useful tweaks along with the flash card blocks more often. It was the same with this weeks Vita update.

It would be nice if rampant hacking and piracy weren't issues and average consumers weren't bothered with these useless updates at all.  Sadly I doubt that will happen either.

The one thing I kind of realized about getting firmware updates for 3DS is that it's not clear what new features people expect to be added. (There are some features that I would love to see on the system, but it's really hard for me to think of reasonable business justification for Nintendo. I also doubt that a meaningful portion of the 3DS user base would care about the same things I'm hoping for.)

I wish you could add a picture icon for your folders. I wish Swapnote worked better. By that I mean the way it pulls messages and then takes a minute or so to load the new ones is a pain. Also, you can't select blocks of messages for deletion. You have to go one by one. I wish you could send notes to your friendlist folks without going thru Swapnote.

I agree. Swap note could be better, but I rarely use it. I keep forgetting that it's a thing. I checked it over 2 months ago and I spent most of that time deleting things.

Eventually, we're probably going to see the entire 3DS menu/user interface get overhauled to include some, if not all, of the things Nintendo is introducing on Wii U like Miiverse. My hope is that you can transfer your Friend List from 3DS to Wii U and that both systems share the Friend Code (if Nintendo handles that the same way) so they're unified. I'm admittedly just lazy. I don't use my 3DS that frequently so it's taken some time to add NWR people. I think I have a few PMs about adding people that I haven't responded to. Sorry, I'm usually on the forums on my phone and unless you catch me at home, I just meant to "get around to it." Point being, transferring all that simply and quickly would make my life a lot easier whenever I get around to buying a Wii U.

I'd really love if they could just add a regular messaging system to the device. Swapnote doesn't really cut it. I just want to be able to go to my Friends List and tap "Send Message," and then have a little icon pop up on my friend's screen to let him know that I've sent him a message. Swapnote really should be a feature of a regular messaging system, not its own app. Trying to get a bunch of people together to play Mario Kart is even a pain - very annoying to do without being in a chat room going "Okay, we're in the game...can you join yet?" I just want to be able to click on a friend and invite them to a game.

What's the point in stopping flash card that don't run current 3DS software? Is it just fear of those being potentially exploited? It isn't like companies are putting out a bunch of new DS games. Seriously, it's Pokemon and nothing else from here to eternity. Almost as bad as the psp's old firmware updates that did nothing for me

Good suggestions, as are the things other people are putting forth.

My most wanted feature on 3DS, as I've said in multiple forums at different times, is some form of file download/management tool for the SD card - particularly for podcasts. We've got an audio app that allows people to listen to, record, and (to a limited degree) edit audio files... but getting new content on and off the SD card is a pain. The 3DS is designed to never be turned off, and shutting everything down to add a new podcast each morning is a real drag. Why can't that process be automated, so that the feeds I subscribed to are updated automatically via SpotPass and appear on my playlist ready to go without me having to switch out SD cards?
Frankly, this feature would be more convenient than having to sync my iPod and would let me carry one less device around on a day-to-day basis. I'd even be happy to pay for such a feature.

Something like the Wii news channel would also be awesome, as long as it also updates via SpotPass so that I always have the latest news sitting in my pocket, ready to be read whenever and wherever I find time. Sure you can go online and get the latest news... but that's the very point of this portable app: you don't need an online connection to read the latest downloads, and all syncing happens in the background without requiring any effort from the user.

From a business justification? It looks good to third parties. It would make DS games being sold via the eShop more attractive if people can't cheaply and easily pirate everything. DS games are still selling well enough, even there aren't big releases on the horizon. Because they can.

Turn the question around: what is the point of making and selling flash cards? The only answer that makes sense is because there is still good money behind the business, even if DS games aren't the hot new thing.

Flash cards took a lot of money out of Nintendo's pockets and didn't do any favors to developers or distributors either. Even if these updates don't really affect 3DS software in any meaningful way, Nintendo probably hasn't forgiven or forgotten assumed losses from the DS generation.

I suddenly want both of these. Great ideas.

DEATH TO FLASHCARDS

Wait, what?

I wouldn't be surprised if these updates have some subtle stability improvements in them as well.

The Taco's battery life is bad enough, no need to add another hog to the list.
