Title: Hyrule Warriors Might Have Starred Female Link
Post by: King Bowser Koopa on August 20, 2014, 03:12:41 AM

If you thought the game had too many girls already, how do you feel now?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38325/hyrule-warriors-might-have-starred-female-link

Early development artwork for Hyrule Warriors shows a proposed female version of Link.

The revelation comes in the official art book that was included with the Treasure Box version of the game, released only in Japan. The Japanese text calls this version of the character "Rinkuru" rather than the usual "Rinku," which would equate to Linkle.

It is unknown whether the game was originally intended to include an option to choose the gender of the main character before playing the game, or if Linkle was intended as a separate entity to Link. She is simply described in the book as an original character who was rejected during development.

Unfortunately, that isn't correct. So dudes at NeoGAF translated that the design wasn't a female link, but his daughter.

I remember seeing this earlier and everyone thought that it was real and got all sorts of hyped over it. I don't like the idea myself.

I've seen people wanting a female Link in the new Zelda also and I don't get it. It just seems pointless. They should make a game starring Zelda if they want a female lead, which could be interesting. And I mean the star, not like Spirit Tracks.

If players are meant to identify with Link and project themselves onto the character, a female Link should have always been an option for obvious reasons. I hope this happens in future Zelda titles because it might force Nintendo is make Link more of a blank slate again. Nintendo has been giving Link his own personality and he's reacting to the world and other characters beyond player input which is fine if that's what they want to do, but it also contradicts the original point of Link. Either go all-in with characterization (which includes improving the story, dialog etc.), or reel it back; make it more about the adventure and less cinematic.

I would prefer they turn Link into a full character with dialogue and everything, as I find I don't really like silent protagonists. But I agree, either direction is better than going half-way like Skyward Sword did. That game makes it look like Link is physically incapable of talking, which is awkward.

First no horseback Malon and now this. The game should be renamed to Hyrule Missed Opportunities: Now with Nickle and Dime DLC

Actually short of
勇者の女の子版。 リンクの妹的存在として考案された。 : The Hero's girl edition. She was planned on being Link's little sister like archetype.

bull **** should Mario be a woman now? What about Master Chief, should we just have unisex plain characters with no distinguishable features just because some people can't accept that men and women are different sexes?

Mario and Master Chief are actual characters, though, while Nintendo insists upon Link being a silent protagonist. They should either make Link into real character or go full-on with the "player avatar" idea and allow more customization, including gender.

Maybe Hyrule Warriors is the first step to Nintendo actually doing something beyond a standard Zelda game.  Depending how sales go (which I'm sure will be good) they may actually realize that spin-off Zelda games might help turn a profit.  Get out of your comfort zone, Nintendo!

It's the first Zelda game I have been interested in for a while, as one who was tired of the formula by the time Twilight Princess came along so I might be in the minority or I might be the target audience but it does have me excited.

Would like to have seem Aryll as a character. She could have represented the cel shaded Zelda games and used Seagulls to attack the enemies.

I think they might have tried to use Aryll and Tetra if they had been able to borrow more from the art style of Wind Waker.  Maybe they didn't feel that the characters fit in with the overall aesthetic of the game?  I agree that I would have liked to see Aryll, at least much more so than Agitha or Lana.

I'm disappointed that they have not used Aryll more since her debut in Wind Waker. Lana could have even been Aryll when she got older.

I personally am ok with a female link for the simple reason in every story Link is reborn out of need. No where does it say that Link HAS to be a boy. If the need arises for the Hero of Courage to be a girl then so be it. As for the people saying he should be completely customize-able with dialog. No its too late for that each and every one of us have developed Link's personality and each one of them is different. If we start giving dialog that means when we start playing the game our ideas of him are shattered.
