Karma is back for a trial run!
« on: June 24, 2010, 05:13:43 PM »
So, forum karma is back (the score under your name) for a trial run.

It works really simply.  Your overall karma can be applauded or smite-ed which adjusts your score up and down.  Mods can always rate posts.  Other users can rate posts if their karma reaches +5.

This is a TRIAL RUN.

If people whine and complain about their score, the system will be taken away again.

That is all.

WAAAHHHH I don't see it.

Do you need a certain theme to view this Karma or am I just immune to it?

edit: I see it now

What's the rule on bragging about your score?  That's still cool, right?  Because I've got one point, and that's two points more than BNM has.

There is a dark side to every light side.

+ points are the result of leaving an apple on the teachers desk everyday
- points are for the kids too cool to care about some silly rating system

So right now, only the moderator/administrator group can give/take points, and if someone reaches five, they will also have the option?

IIRC, when you reach ten points, you can ban someone for three days.

Correct. I feel there will be too much opportunity for griefing if it's open to everyone. Don't want some to arbitrarily give -1 to every single post or something.

However, people that reach +5 should be able to be trusted. :)

Is there a limit to the points people can give/take? Something like one a day seems ideal.

That limit sounds like a terrible idea.  Maybe limit the moderators who are under 0, but that should be it.

Sounds like there is potential for abuse, but i'm sure the mods/admins will watch out for that.

Basically, the staff gets to decide who will have the ability grant/take karma, so it's only going to be people who they feel will not abuse the system. And if someone does, I'm sure the staff will collective bring their points under 5 to remove the ability.

the mods are great people and really deserve shipments of delicious cupcakes.
Even if perhaps they didn't like cupcakes they should get the type that they are not aware that they like.

if they absolutely refuse the cupcakes, then they should get pie.

For the record, I don't typically give out "rep" - and rarely do I take it away, although I deduct rep more easily than I give it.  Quite frankly, I expect my fellow posters to have good posts, so it takes something really special for me to take notice.  ;)  Basically, what I'm saying, is don't expect me to use this too much.

However, I would like to ask - is there a way that users can see what posts they've gotten points/points taken away for?

It doesn't do me any good to log in and see that I have -50 points if I don't know why.

As soon as I get five points, I'm going to start up a points racket, and keep everyone except for those who suck up to me down.

As soon as I get five points

I'll see to it that this does not happen.
