One more for the road.

The mystery of the next Zelda has finally been solved.

As the final trailer for the Nintendo Direct, the sequel to Breath of the Wild was officially named "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" and will launch on May 12, 2023.

The brief trailer showed Link climbing through the environment and surfing through the sky on a glider-like object of unknown origin.

Invoking the imagery of tears in the sequel to Breath of the Rain doesn’t inspire much confidence that I’m not going to get chokeslammed by the weather again.

Is it “tears” as in crying or as in ripping?

Anyway, one thing I noticed is how much better the lighting is in the sequel.

Do you know what I really like about this?  Obviously the game itself is something I want on day one but it also means that this is actually coming to the Switch.  I was worried as time went on that this would move to a Switch successor.  It could have been a dual-release like Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild but I figure by now they would have revealed the Switch successor if it's due by May.  And that I like because I'm not ready to move on from the Switch yet so I hope it sticks around for a bit longer.

Well we got a name and release date, so that's progress.  It's still 9 months away, so we'll have to wait until the usual February Direct before they finally give it the big reveal.

Is it “tears” as in crying or as in ripping?

I imagine it's crying tears since the previous trailer from last year showed that part were Link seemed to travel up into the sky with what like some kind of water drop.  That travel mechanic is probably called tears then and is how Link can travel up to the Sky.  Wouldn't be the first time they named the game after something you use to help you travel in the game.

At first I thought the clip of Link climbing the tree root (about 1min in) was in the rain, and it was showing active climbing in such weather.  In review, it seems more like just particle effects during that clip.

There are (LARGE) thunder storms clearly visible in some of the clips... makes me thing rain might still be used to prevent some progress to areas until you get more stamina/resources like it was in botw.

Switch 2 spring 2023 then?

That actually might not be so far off. The original rumors were that Nintendo was planning it in 2020/2021 but switched to an earlier idea of a Switch OLED due to the chip shortage. nVidia currently has excess future order of 5nm wafers thanks to the crypto crash that they can't cancel which means like with the Tegra X1 chip, they might offer Nintendo a deal they can't refuse to start mass producing the Switch Pro's chip soon.
