As we inch ever so closely to the release of Animal Crossing, the boys find them talking about none other than... Children of Morta. BUT it isn't Jerry this time 'round. Casey's been trying to fill that void before AC so he decided to check it out! Then with a nicely timed Indie World Showcase, we get to break down each game and talk about what looks cool!

We kick off the episode the only way we know and that's with some Wing talk and Perry... well he's finding new ways to enjoy wings. He's making 'em on his on (I know, what a JIM!) with his newly minted Air Fryer. But onto more pressing topics, Casey took advantage of the DOOM sale and has been messing around with the OG FPS. And speaking of FPS... well Perry isn't playing one at all, but instead playing more Fortnite.

After the break we're honored to be joined by Kay and Rafael of Paper Castle Games to talk about their recent release Underhero. A really cool platformer RPG that feels a bit like Paper Mario, but with a twist! You won't want to miss the interview and you'll definitely want to check out the game!

What we once thought would be a smaller episode turned into a big ol' boy with plenty of games to talk about. We kick it off with the usual, food talk of course. But as far as games go, Perry has been working hard to make his brain bigger and stronger with Brain Training. Casey's shutting his brain off with Minecraft and both the boys have been messing around with Goblin Sword. Then please forgive Casey's half hour of WoW Classic talk!

While the News isn't plentiful this week, the eShop picks are and then we get into Listener Mail! We always love fielding questions, so please don't hesitate to send them in! Also make sure to leave a 5 Star Review for a chance to win an inbox Animal Crossing amiibo! We're giving away one a week up until the launch of New Horizons!!!

TalkBack / Devil May Cry 3 (Switch) Review
« on: February 20, 2020, 11:51:21 AM »

The addition of Free Style to the Switch makes this the definitive way to play.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/52926/devil-may-cry-3-switch-review

After the rocky reception of Devil May Cry 2, Capcom knew they had to hit on the third installment in order to keep the franchise from fizzling out. Thus they reverted back to a direction more akin to the first title, including the over-the-top version of our protagonist Dante instead of the more silent iteration found in 2. Signs of aging do crop up throughout, most specifically in regards to the camera and platorming, but fluid and fun combat are enough to hide the blemishes. New for the Switch is the ability to change out play Styles on the fly, making the action even faster and more seamless than ever before.

Devil May Cry 3 is a prequel to the first title, setting up a story that includes Dante’s brother Vergil as a big player throughout. While Vergil is a predominant force to be reckoned with, there are others you meet along the way resulting in some truly memorable battles. Capcom hit the nail on the head with enemy and boss design, keeping things fresh as you combo your way through the legions of foes put in your way.

With any good character action game, the most important element is combat and looking as cool as humanly, or not so humanly, possible while doing it. Fortunately Devil May Cry 3 stands tall in this department and it’s never been more true than with with the latest release on the Switch. In combat Dante can use his melee weapon and guns in tandem to unleash a flurry of punishment upon the enemies. Doing this effectively without spamming the same attacks will lead to higher scores at the end of each mission. This system really shines as you unlock more weapons, opening up the possibility for new and flashy combos. Earning red orbs on your travels allows you to power up ranged weapons and unlock even more new skills for each melee weapon, helping with the pursuit of looking like a complete badass.

Introduced to the series in the game’s initial release are Styles, which are specialized movesets. These alter the special abilities Dante can perform and certain Styles are more beneficial than others depending on the situation. In the prior versions, you could only use one Style until you reached a Divinity Statue before switching, but for the Switch version you can choose to play Free Style. This gives you the option to switch between Styles on the fly, even during combat, giving you greater control and freedom. I really enjoyed being able to change it up, especially on difficult bosses where an evade skill was insanely helpful.

Despite being released over 15 years ago, Devil May Cry 3 holds up fairly well to today's standards. The combat is engaging, fun, and challenging, but very rewarding. The visuals, while a HD version of a PS2 game, still look good especially from an atmospheric point of view. Some areas have the camera set back and reveal a beautiful sky shot atop a medieval castle, which more often than not yielded a handful of screenshots. While beautiful, navigating them wasn’t always as enjoyable. Moving between areas results in some weird camera positioning that feels dated and platforming can be frustrating, except for those amazing bounce pads you can jump on to shoot yourself up super high, those were great. Thankfully platforming isn’t the focal point and acts as some down time between battles.

Character action games rely heavily on combat and style and Devil May Cry 3 manages to deliver just that in spades. While not being able to completely withstand the test of time, the addition of Free Style play to the Switch version gives the title a breath of fresh air, offering veterans of the series a fresh take on the classic while making it even more accessible to newcomers.

Perry's a big ol’ pervbag. That doesn't have much to do with the show, but figured it never hurts to reiterate the truth. Speaking of Jerry, he's been continuing his enjoyment of Brain Training, but also has added another puzzler to the mix with Depixtion. Casey on the other hand has a mystery for ol’ Berry.

TalkBack / Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (Switch) Review
« on: September 27, 2019, 11:24:42 AM »

A mostly tidy experience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/51807/ni-no-kuni-wrath-of-the-white-witch-switch-review

Developer Level-5 is no stranger to making great RPGs, but none quite hold the clout that Ni no Kuni does. Originally released in 2011 in Japan, the pairing with Studio Ghibli immediately captured the hearts of millions with its stunning visuals and engaging battle system. Nearly seven years after its North American release, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch finally makes its debut on a Nintendo console. While the Switch isn’t getting the Remastered version that the PS4 and PC will be receiving, the port does run smoothly. There were a few crashes while attempting to save, but fortunately these were a rare occurrence and not the norm.

Ni no Kuni follows the story of a young boy named Oliver who tragically loses his mother. Distraught, he locks himself in his bedroom for days on end, when he ends up shedding a tear on a doll his mother had made for him. To his disbelief, the tear brings the doll to life, who we learn is Drippy, a fairy transformed by a curse into that form. Drippy informs Oliver that there may be hope to save his mother by stopping the evil Shadar from destroying his world as both Drippy’s world and the people within it are linked to Oliver’s. As he explores a variety of incredible locations, Oliver meets a wonderful cast of characters, helping him in his quest to save the world.

With any good RPG, an enjoyable battle system is imperative, and Ni no Kuni delivers a great blend of menu-based elements combined with a more action-focused approach. Battles take place in a 3D area where you and your Familiars, small creatures that fight alongside you, can move around freely. This allows you to distance yourself from enemies to avoid melee attacks, but it doesn’t make you immune to damage as spells still wreak havoc. While the party starts off with just Oliver, you gain new members along the way and in battle can switch between one of the three members on the fly as well as any of their three Familiars. This gives you up to 12 options for combat in any given battle, which can seem a bit daunting.

Originally, I honed in on just using one character and their Familiars, but as you encounter more challenging enemies, switching between characters becomes more important. When party members are controlled by the AI, they often die or blow through their MP really quickly. Tactics options allow you to give them a style of play, but the choices are limited. All Out Attack and All Out Defense options allow you to provide helpful direction, but these aren’t unlocked until a little bit into the game. It definitely gets frustrating when your team becomes low on MP during a long stretch of exploration as these areas tend to have a ton of encounters. MP and HP orbs do drop from enemies while in combat, so you can regain some there, but a lot of the time I found myself battling with little to no MP.

Familiars are a huge part of Ni no Kuni’s combat and putting together a solid team of them can be rewarding. These creatures act similar to Pokémon: you battle them in the wild and have a random chance to recruit them to your squad. Once they join you, each character can have three equipped and a reserve stock of three more, while the rest are sent to a bank, which is accessible at certain points, usually near a save stone. Familiars gain experience and level up in battle, eventually gaining the ability to undergo metamorphosis. Once they reach this point, using a stone matching the Familiar’s type will have them change into a stronger form with new skills to learn. These changes aren’t as drastic as a Pokémon evolution visually, but they still feel rewarding. Instead of keeping their current level, Familiars are reset down to level one, forcing you to level them up a bit before, say, taking on a big powerful boss. Familiars can also be powered up by feeding them treats you find or purchase. Certain foods will increase particular stats and this is a great way to customize the skillsets, but at the cost of painfully watching the feeding animation over and over with no way to skip it.

Where Ni no Kuni stands out the most is in its wonderful visual style. Of course, the Studio Ghibli animated cutscenes are always a treat, but I was constantly excited to explore new areas. Each new city you visit has a distinct flair and dungeons were always stunning, to the point where I was constantly stopping to look around at the little details within. Character and Familiar designs are interesting as well, but the real breadwinner is the environments. Interactions between characters and the overall dialogue is great, especially with the amazing voicework. The Switch port does a pretty bang up job outside of a few crashes I experienced. These came when trying to save my progress at save stones. Both came relatively early in the adventure, but constant saving was something I did moving forward. I experienced a few smaller glitches such as cars bugging out in town and an escort quest forcing me to leave the area and come back to fix it. Outside of these instances, the port runs well and looks good on the Switch.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has gained the reputation of being a top-tier RPG and among the favorites of all time for some. While it certainly does a lot right, I think a few things hold it back from being truly amazing. The battle system, while fun, can become frustrating at points with the AI-controlled party members. Constantly switching between characters during regular battles wasn’t something I found to be as enjoyable as doing it for boss fights, but not doing so resulted in low MP. With a pretty high encounter rate, this caused more than a few issues. That’s not to say Ni no Kuni  isn’t entertaining; it just feels a bit imperfect. Regardless, exploring the different sights within the stunning world and interacting with its fascinating characters helped to overcome the shortcomings.

We kick off the show with the now seemingly weekly update on our good eats followed by everyone's favorite, WoW Classic chat with Cassie Jibbons. However then Perry smacks Casey in the face with a surprise Mystery History! And Perry is a big ol cheat so you'll definitely won't want to miss it! We then shift gears to some good ol Pilotwings and Ni no Kuni.

Naturally we do the good ol' eShop Roundup and News Block, but then we sit down to discuss the Top 3 SNES Games we want to see hit the Nintendo Switch Online service. Sure we could have just said Donkey Kong Country 1-3 and called it a day, but we decide to spice it up a bit... even though we all would love that.
