Nintendo Gaming / Mr. Shifty Thread
« on: April 10, 2017, 01:59:23 PM »
Looked to see if there already was one and sadly I only even saw 2 mentions of the game come up at all in the Forum search so here we are with its own thread. Since the game comes out this Thursday I figured it's high time to get people talking about it.

Since I'm a big fan of Hotline Miami and old-school brawler games the mix of those with teleportation to boot has me psyched. I got a review copy of the game and will be streaming tonight and probably the rest of the week as well in the evenings if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/user/themameiac

Nintendo Gaming / Indies for the Switch!
« on: February 19, 2017, 01:16:28 PM »
Since I didn't see a thread for this anytime in recent history, and rather than potentially have multiple threads discussing different games, I figured I'd try it out this way. What indie games on another platform (I suppose even already on the WiiU if you think they're great) would you hope could get ported over to the Switch? Maybe not even true indies, just smaller-scale games even (Geometry Wars comes to mind for me), but what would you be interested in and why?

I actually am working on a Playlist on my YouTube channel that strings together all of the indie games I am playing, or have played a ton of, on PC: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBvKMC4FxxvviUxsdMOUmWp7SIVbcBg41

I'm still adding to it but so far the list includes:
  • Nuclear Throne - Tough rogue-ish shooter, but MAN is it addictive
  • Neon Chrome - A pretty different kind of shooter with its own look and style. Futuristic and fun, though it may not scale well in portable mode
  • Galak-Z - An anime throwback style and some rogue-ish elements make for a pretty good time
  • Assault Android Cactus - Pretty well pure shooter bliss for me, much more a traditional arcade-style shooter but with very different play styles depending on who you choose
  • Rocket League - Rocket-powered cars mixed with 3 on 3 soccer. It is an incredible game and probably one of the most successful indie games in recent years
  • BroForce - Classic arcade shooters meet 80s action movie stars. Very fun and silly but can be tough as hell at times as well
  • Crypt of the NecroDancer - Rhythm game meets rogue-style RPG. Very unique and fun
  • Hotline Miami - Though the sequel didn't do as well it is a unique game mixing a retro style, hyper-violence, trippy imagery at times, and a lot of dying and trying again
  • Hand of Fate - A bit like mixing D&D with a deck-building game with an action brawler. It was a solid challenge and it was almost always changing things up on me from attempt to attempt
  • Rogue Legacy - By its name did you guess it is a rogue-like? Side-scrolling action reminiscent of something like Castlevania mixed with some very unusual hero traits that can sometimes drastically alter play and some challenges to grind out some better equipment and choices for yourself so you can try to get further and further into the castle
Will still be adding more and will note them as we go but interested to see what other people would love to see on the Switch, some video is always helpful as well to help people visualize.  :D

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Switch Memes
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:10:31 PM »
Looked around for a thread for these and didn't see anything, just I'll periodically see some funny memes for Nintendo or the Switch and figured other people may enjoy them as well. This one I made today just because it is the one element of the Zelda DLC that made me think, "WTF?"

Not sure who here may even remember me anymore but I'm a massive Nintendo fanboy (and I may have spent some time on this sort of thing at some point) and, even as much as I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, 1-2-Switch STILL pisses me off. If anything, I may actually be most irritated by the fact that my issues with the game are mostly preventable and boil down to marketing, how they've apparently structured it, and how it stands out among so many steps forward as a step back.

I have my Switch impressions article going through the process and it will touch on some of this in that space. Wondering what people would think about something more long form, a sort of rant on the game and the missed opportunities and misfires I see in it.

Oh, and how are some of the old folks doing? It's been a (long) while...

General Gaming / Diablo 3 Players? Clan up!
« on: March 03, 2014, 07:49:55 PM »
Just was trying to figure out what would be the best way to get something going with a clan (now that they're available) to bring some community to things and some old school Nintendo love seemed to be in order. I figure there must be other people out there who love some Diablo when the gaps between Nintendo releases are in effect so check it out if you'd like. :)

TalkBack / Jesus, I'm Old

To whom it may concern,

Welcome to my auspicious return to "the scene". If you're unfamiliar with me look in the Editorial section back to the dawn of time and you'll find some inane ramblings. You may also find some ancient reviews of mine perhaps (I still giggle over the fun I had lambasting BMX XXX) if you turn the filters to GC and REALLY OLD. If you've been on the scene long enough to remember me, yes, I am still as much of a self-righteous, long-winded and opinionated blowhard as ever... just now my chronological age has begun to sneak up on the geezerly "get off my lawn" opinions I had way back when.

Forgive me if I may be a bit disoriented, but things have changed a wee bit since I last contributed in any meaningful way to a site. The web is a bit of a different place now, as anyone with a web connection can post their thoughts to a blog (complete with free hosting, mind you)... somewhat posing a watered-down threat to "reputable sites" in the same way that scene sites were stealing from pay sites way back when. Shoot, in the day we paid for that hosting and we needed to broker our own deals for ads if we wanted to avoid putting a dent in our pocketbooks, and we fought an uphill battle to garner industry connections and get invites to events or evaluation games.

Danged whipper-snappers these days don't know how easy they have it! We didn't have the TwitterBook or FaceSpace! We worked boards diligently on other sites trying to get nibbles through cross-links or we'd work to grease the palms of other sites with promises of linking back to them or whatever we could think of to suck someone in. We also didn't have nice site back-ends for publishing our content into a database. Oh no! We hand-crafted our HTML and manually made our links and we liked it! Shoot, back at the start it was wild when I coded up a JavaScript powered form that you could type your content into that would then spit out the HTML for people to email me so I could then upload the page via FTP and link it up within the site through the front page and main section pages with much diligence and care! Even when the original DB-backed incarnation of this site made its unholy debut (an effort in learning Cold Fusion and SQL that ultimately contributed to getting me fired from my full-time job) with primitive DB design and god-awful beginner code that was progress somehow... we were pushing the edge of what people did for free on the side.

But no, I'm not bitter how comparatively easy people have it now... someone had to expend blood, sweat, and tears to get the ball rolling. You pay extra to beat the curve and it was a hell of a time back when you could count the truly known sites and people in the scene on your fingers and toes. Now it is certainly simpler to get going but in the end your content has to be that much more remarkable to be heard above the chattering of the crowd. I think I love the Despair.com Demotivator that says it the best: "Blogging: Never Before Have So Many People With So Little To Say Said So Much To So Few". Amen.

I hope to get back to contributing in some capacity, with my advanced age (all of 35... so over the hill!) and two lovely girls (for those who remember, the birth of my first prompted my departure from the scene over 8 years ago) perhaps I have a new perspective to offer as a gamer with kids. If you have ideas for things you'd like to see be sure to let me know. I have as much to blather on about as I ever did, just at some point a real job and family really took away the spark to put it cohesively into print. Perhaps it is time to get the brain out of mothballs and begin pissing people off once more. Now THERE'S a motivator...

TalkBack / Want a Freebie NES Classic for Animal Crossing?
« on: October 02, 2002, 09:49:13 AM »
Want another classic NES game for your collection in Animal Crossing? Find out how to do it!

Cursing that you just can't seem to acquire enough classic NES games in Animal Crossing without trading your life away or getting disgustingly lucky? Here's a way to get a classic NES title (though not a great one by any means... we won't ruin by telling which game) for yourself and all you need to do is carefully follow some instructions.

First you'll want to go to the Animal Crossing website and hit the news page. Once there you'll notice an ad in the upper-right corner of the page with the text "Dear Pecan," in it. Repeatedly click on that ad and you'll eventually get the opportunity to enter some information about yourself (though the code isn't emailed to you, so you don't necessarily have to give any real information should you choose not to).

Once you've gotten past that step you'll be prompted to enter in your character name and town name in a Flash version of the AC keyboard interface we've all learned to love to hate. Carefully enter everything properly so you aren't wasting your time and BOOM! You'll have a code to give to your boy Tom Nook so you can get a new NES classic for little more than a few minutes of your time.
