TalkBack / Re: Dungeon Crawling Away in These Persona Q First Looks
« on: June 04, 2014, 10:26:06 PM »
As a huge fan of the Etrian Odyssey series I'm very interested in this title. My misgiving is that I've never played a Persona game and I fear that a lot of what the title has to offer might be missed by me.

Huh. I thought Inafune's Bugs Vs. Tanks was suppose to come out today as well.

Either I was mistaken or it got pushed back. Oh well, Picross E is an automatic buy and I'm looking forward to learning more about the Shining Force game as well.

I'm feeling a lot of pain as a Wii-U owner. I bought the system at launch and have only turned it on for about 3 hours (enough to update it and set up my NN ID). I'm not a Mario or Smash Bros. fan either which hurts things more. Only bought one at launch because my son was going to ask Santa for one anyways.

Here's hoping for Xenoblade 2, Yarn Yoshi, or Dragon Quest X!

TalkBack / Re: Castlevania Review Mini
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:25:54 PM »
I think the larger issue is that you're trying to look at Castlevania through a modern lens. There are very valid reasons why the game was considered outstanding back in 1987 which I shouldn't need to reiterate ad nauseum here.

I will however make this one small point: early NES games (and May 1987 is a very early NES game since the NES didn't truly release in NA until 1986) are very different from the later NES games like SMB3. Three years may not seem like it would make much of a difference now but back in the 80's gaming tech was progressing much more rapidly than it is today.

Just look at the games that were releasing around that same time period: Pro Wrestling, Ikari Warriors, Kid Icarus, Rygar, etc... Castlevania was the third platformer to be released for the NES, the other two being SMB1 and G'n'G.

The only thing that's holding me back from an eshop purchase is that I can beat the game without save states in one life because it's still a favorite of mine. That would make for about a 40 minute experience. Though this is also just a modern gripe and I'm certain to give-in and purchase it eventually.

TalkBack / Re: Etrian Odyssey IV: Legend of the Titan Review
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:40:53 PM »
A great addition to the franchise. I'm currently on the third stratum, normal mode.

I do think the series could learn a few thing from Unchained Blades though. Besides the crappy follower system, Unchained Blades vastly improved upon the skill tree system and had an interesting party mechanic which allowed for inter-party back-and-forth. Rumor has it that the next Etrian Odyssey will improve upon the latter but will still be frozen in it's old concept of skill trees, which is a shame.

Either way, Etrian Odyssey IV is a great game and deserves every bit of praise it gets. Interesting read, Patrick. Cheers.

This game is absolutely amazing and a must have for anyone who enjoys Etrian Odyssey styled dungeon crawlers. Perhaps this genre just doesn't coalesce well with the reviewer?

This is the game I was most excited about in the Guild 01 collection. I'm very glad the digital age has given us the chance to play a game that would not have been localized otherwise.

Here's hoping XSEED's Unchained Blades is soon to follow!

Really not impressed at all with NintendoLand. Maybe I'm just completely jaded over mini-game collections these days. I didn't think NintendoLand was a bad game, just a very boring game, which is a much more severe offense.

Still waiting on Unchained Blades, Crimson Shroud, and Shantae 3. Only 7 more Thursdays left in the year and I'm assuming that after the Wii-U launches there'll be a healthy focus on the brand new console. It has me both worried and excited!

It would be great if NoA would keep up this trend but I don't think Reggie has a clue how to cater to the core audience. I mean, the Game Boy well runs deep and NES titles are perfectly suited for the system. That's without even looking at GBC, GBA, and SNES. I could be devoting twenty dollars a week just for eShop titles for years to come if Nintendo had any clue how to come get it.

Anyways, great week. Will pick up Lib Maid and GnG. Maybe NightSky as well....

I wasn't really interested in Denpa but now that everyone says they enjoyed it and there's a demo I'll have to check it out. Consider my curiosity piqued!

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Will Be Region-Locked
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:21:49 PM »
Nothing to be gained, everything to be lost by region locking.

The Wii-U is looking far and far less appealing the more I learn about it. NoA consistently refuses to localize the games I want. Instead the try to cater to the casuals with titles like Wii-U Fit, SiNG, and Nintendo Land. Then offer backhanded tokenism to what they think the core wants; Batman, ME3, and the like. I fell for the whole spiel once with Wii. Third party developers are on board, just look at Red Steel! Not this time, Ninty has to prove themselves to earn my gaming dollars now.

I've never done this since I had an NES at launch (yeah I'm a grumpy, old bastard) but maybe it's time to jump ship to Sony. At least they want my money, even if it is in spades.

TalkBack / Re: Sweet Memories Blackjack Review
« on: September 01, 2012, 09:16:02 PM »
@Neal: It's fine, I didn't take it to heart. I only responded because for some reason I felt compelled to add in more details about the game. Not because I'm being defensive about the product, that would imply emotional investment in the game and that would be weird. Very weird indeed, especially since I'm 34 and married.

Also, your review is not wrong. It is a bad game. I would not suggest it to anyone who is interested in dating sims nor anyone who's looking for a serious blackjack game. The blackjack is broken as it does not follow standard casino rules and is of no help to anyone who enjoys gambling on blackjack. If it was my review I would have only given it a 4/10 simply because I enjoyed trying to achieve odd results in blackjack that you normally do not attempt such as win a hand with trip aces, push three times in a row, or win a hand with 6 cards.

Funny little story with the game (contains spoilers):
I was on my lunch break at work when I finished the dating sim "route". After a few lines of REALLY bad Engrish the girls lips pop up on the touch screen. Hoping to God no one was watching I waited for the scene to play out but the image was frozen. Then I realized in horror that the game was waiting for the player to kiss the touch screen. I looked over my shoulder again and then said to myself, "no way in hell" and was about ready to turn the game off until I realized I could just tap the screen with my finger.

It takes about 4.5 hrs to play 1,000 hands, not 15-20 hours. I've logged 13.25 hours and 3,446 hands (I like blackjack).

Sweet Memories: Blackjack is decent. It's an okay-ish blackjack game though there are three quirks in that part. You can not split, you can push when the dealer gets blackjack by just getting 21, and the dealer often sticks lower than 17. So for the card game part of it I would give it a 5 out of 10.

As for the "dating sim" part of it there is only one route to follow. There are other girls you can play at certain times of the day such as the rest of the club during normal school hours or the main girl's sister during the evening. The route itself is quite simple and heavy on "Engrish". I would give that side of the game a 4 out of 10.

Where the game shines though is that there are 26 blackjack achievements to unlock, some of which a very difficult. This makes returning to the game much more pleasurable even after you've finished the story arc which takes about 2,000 hands. They are quite well thought out and often devious and my main pleasure that I've derived from the game.

How forgiving is the input detection? Is it demanding perfect, all or nothing timing like Rhythm Heaven or is it a bit more forgiving like Elite Beat Agents?

Not a fan of Luigi's Mansion but I see the Castlevania delay as a huge relief. I was staring down the face of three, possibly five games to purchase in October.

I am certainly picking up Code of Princess and Zero Escape. I also want Adventure Time and Unchained Blades which are both tentative October titles.

I'm also curious about Spy Hunter and NightSky.

My problem is that I so do not care about the coins. Even in other 2D Mario games I wouldn't even hit the jump button to grab coins as I was running by. Hopefully NSMBU will be more up my alley.

TalkBack / Re: Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure Review
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:13:45 PM »
A review does not need to be a critique by definition. It can also be a general or detailed survey or account but that's a discussion of semantics.

Also I don't think the reader is served well with just a general fact sheet, especially one as sarcastic as Ceric's. (Great to be on the internet where attempting a discussion is often bombarded by snide little remarks, isn't it?)

I guess I'm trying to say is that it would benefit more readers (in my own experience of course) if reviews were more in-depth and descriptive about the actual content being reviewed and less about the reviewer's own personal perspective of the content.

To clarify, even though I disagree with Alex's opinion of Rhythm Thief I understand it. I found his article thought out and well written (like most of his articles) and I certainly could not do any better. This is not some tirade against this specific review but merely me venting some frustrations at the review process in general.

I must stop now before I begin ranting on about how flawed the concept of "review scores" is.

It's a review.  By nature, reviews are opinions.  Opinions aren't about "facts".

Which is why most reviews are of little worth.

Nothing against Alex but I honestly don't care if he likes or doesn't like a game. I'm interested in whether I will like a game or not. For a review to be actually helpful to potential purchasers they need to be based on facts instead of personal opinions so I can make my own informed opinion.

If the game focused on FF4 and 6 I would surely buy it. I don't care about the other titles in the series which means  I wouldn't care about or recognize most of the other characters and songs in the game.

Sounds like a great game for those who love most of the series but for me I'll be waiting until tomorrow when Rhythm Thief comes out.

Any idea if the stylus is still located at the top or has it been moved back to the right like on the DS line?

Man, I hope not.  Putting a team as talented as Retro on a 3DS game just seems like wasting their considerable abilities.  And if that were the case, I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't feature that game in the press conference.

I just don't understand this line of thinking with the general core gamer. Since when has a handheld game become "less than"? Why does a game becomes superior just because it forces you to be tied down to a big screen TV?

It's like when people complained that RE: Revelations should have been a console game. Porting Revelations to the Wii would not make it more enjoyable in any tangible sense.

/rant

I would assume the reason they would not show a Retro 3DS game during the conference was because they planned to save all new 3DS material for the showcase. Scribblenauts aside because that was announced for the Wii-U as well.
