TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct Coming Thursday
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:10:38 AM »
I don't believe there will be any "damage control" at all. The reality is most Nintendo customers have no idea Ubisoft screwed the WiiU's version of Rayman or that the 3DS is underperforming in the USA. More likely, it will be more of the same, highlighting the forthcoming games, such as Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon, and Castlevania. Considering Japan is not having its own episode, I speculate they will announce and demonstrate the new Animal Crossing, which was already released there.

Looks a lot like Xenoblade but uglier. Hopefully, the final game will include some more colourful scenarios.

Turning speed was always a problem using the Wii remote + nunchuck. However, it wasn't a problem when it was the only way to play it. I am afraid it might offer a disadvantage to players using it against others with the new Pro or the Gamepad.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will you do with your Wii after you buy a Wii U?
« on: September 15, 2012, 06:37:28 PM »
I plan to pick up The Last Story this week, which should be the last game I will play on my Wii. After that, I'll install it át. My sister-in-law home, where it will introduce her kids on the Nintendo family.

I'm impressed, but I will hold out to see what Konami does with Pro Evo should they decide to bring the franchise to the Wii U.

I agree, PES for Wii have my favourite football controls on any video game. I look forward to see what Konami is cooking this time

TalkBack / Re: Unified eShop Accounts Coming Later This Year

Because Latin America uses a different Internet?

Maybe it's the same reason Pikmin 3 isn't online, Nintendo are using Internet 1.0 still instead of 3.0. :P:

Greed is more likely. Right now, I can purchase at USA e Shop from Brazil, despite they send me to a nice cover page in Portuguese. The prices are the same and I need to use an international credit card. However, the Brazilian taxes make games very expensive in my country. If they allow me to purchase directly from the e-shop with the american price -- which was exactly my plan -- Brazilian retailers will loose my money. I believe Nintendo is trying to protect the local retailers and also cashing the taxes they are not paying by having different prices.

In the end, they will only give me the trouble to use a proxy service to mislead Nintendo I am using an american I.P.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 23: Kinnectivity
« on: February 28, 2012, 06:40:17 AM »
Perhaps I don't have a clue as I don't play golf but I fail to see how a Kinect controlled golf game can be appealing. My understanding, by playing a little of Wii Sports Resort and Tiger Woods is that placing some spin on the ball is quite important. As far as I can see, the way to do it is hitting the ball with your club making a certain angle (fade way or something like that). The previously cited games use Motion Plus to implement that but I don't believe there is any way Kinect could register the angle of your hands while you hit the ball, at least with the precision necessary to a good golfing game.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct: What Do We Expect?
« on: February 22, 2012, 05:38:18 AM »
I guess this Nintendo Direct is set up to take some thunder from the PSVita launch. As such, I expect some bombastic games for the 3DS. We already know there is a 2D Mario game in development. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo unveil it as well as other big release, such as a Pokémon 3DS, along others games.

« on: February 16, 2012, 10:38:21 AM »
I played this game on the ps2 and I think it is, by far, the best of the series. That said, the controls weren't that good and they surely took something from the game. In the 3DS version, I understand the touch screen is being well used as a HUD and to manage the equipment. That souds fine. However, I cannot imagine how aiming with buttons can turn in something acceptable. Also, by using face buttons, the circle pad, and shoulder buttons, it seems there is no way to handle the console without hurting my hands after a few minutes.

Well, too much of a rant. i guess I will download the demo and check it out myself.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: E3 2012 Predictions
« on: January 30, 2012, 02:40:28 PM »
Reggie will open telling us how great the 3DS is performing and will show trailers from some games we already saw in TGS and, perhaps, a brand new Nintendo title.

The DS and Wii will be briefly mentioned and, perhaps, they will show The Last Story as a late summer release.

Iwata will follow revealing the final form and name of the Wii U. He will talk about some features, including that Nintendo hired Valve to create and run the network.

Reggie will be back with the games, including Pikimin, Wii U Play (bundled game to show off the novel features and some Wii Sports modes, such as baseball and golf), and Killer Freaks. He will invite Peter Moore to the stage and will demo how the Wii U allows two controllers, in which a player can select plays in Madden on the without the fear to be peeked. Finally, Miyamoto will go to stage to show a new Mario 3D game (EAD Tokyo has two teams, one recently finished 3D Land, I guess the other is working with the Wii U).

Iwata will be back to stage and announce price and release date.

Meanwhile, I'll be very happy at home watching the stream.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 276: Star Wars Porn
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:48:08 PM »
Jonny, I am not sure if retailer's profit margin in consoles is as high as TV sets. However, I am pretty sure they make more money selling games than selling consoles as it is the exact same reason why Sony usually sells consoles at a loss. As such, they will make their best to keep this lucrative sales to themselves. As most of the sales are still in retail, they have enough power to negotiate in a good position with the distributor.

I am a little late in the discussion but I would like to point out why digital downloads cannot be less expensive than retail titles. In that scenario, the vendors are screwed as the console acts as a Trojan Horse, taking their profits from games sales away. As such, if Sony does that, they will actually incentive the vendors to push the 3DS and not stock the Vita, as the former will bring more business to them. A similar situation happened with the PSP Go. It barely sold any units, not only because of the initial high price but, especially, because vendors pushed the DS or the PSP instead of it. I would like to say Sony learned the lesson but, considering the high price of the Vita, the lack of back compatibility, and a lackluster launch library to the Japanese market, perhaps I am assuming too much.

TalkBack / Re: So How Many Xbox 360s Do I Need to Duct Tape Together?
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:23:32 PM »
If I recall correctly, the source said there is no Next Box development kit. As such, he or she is inferring the power based on specifications. Even if he has access to this document, it is all speculation at this point. Whatever is the true graphic power of the Wii U and the Next Box, they will be both limited to the 1080p, 60 fps of the current TV sets (no way 4K TVs will be popular in the next decade) and, as such, I doubt there will be much difference in these consoles in terms of graphics. The Wii U will be characterized by its tablet whereas the Next Box by Kinect's integration. Sony, I guess, is undecided in which company they will copy.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 275: The Pen-and-Paper Podcast
« on: January 18, 2012, 06:54:31 AM »
Good episode. As a Bethesda hater (not really, but close), I just want to point out why I really dislike their products. I've played about six hours of Oblivion and I finished Fallout 3, both in the Playstation 3. The problems you discussed are also true to these previous games. Fallout becomes nearly unplayable after a while. I would have to reboot the game every 10 minutes to avoid it freezing in a slide show. As far as I know, Skyrim suffers from the same problems. The fact is Bethesda knows their engine will not work properly in the PS3 as it doesn't have as much memory as the PC in which it was initially developed. They know it for years now and they don't care to change it because they think the press, for most part, is to eager to bite the hype and objectively review their games and their customers are stupid enough to learn from their previous products. As the company appears to not care about their customers' experience, I stopped caring about their games.

Regarding Skyrim, I might be biased but I am not sure why so people are excited about it. The graphics are better than Oblivion but the characters still look pretty bad. Also, if the game follows Oblivion and Fallout and considering what I heard so far, the story should be mediocre at best without no emotional linkage to the player. Finally, I keep hearing praise for this game from the same people who complains about padding in Skyward Sword. Really? I guess Bethesda improved their quests design a lot since Fallout.

TalkBack / Re: Icon Games Reveals WiiWare Sales Numbers
« on: January 04, 2012, 04:56:27 AM »
Nintendo Life additionally reports that, according to Icon's Richard Hill-Whittall, Bashi Blocks' numbers are inflated as the game was, for a limited time, offered for free to PSN Plus subscribers. Considering this, any comparison between platforms is pointless.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct: Fire Emblem 3DS Name, Release Date Revealed
« on: December 26, 2011, 11:27:23 PM »
I love Fire Emblem. However, I am worried if this game will be released by NOA. It has a niche audience and the second DS game was never released outside Japan. If anything, there was a Fire Emblem among the Ambassador line. Perhaps this is a good sign of Nintendo trying to increase the awareness of the brand.

17
But why would Gamestop give a **** about a niche Wii game? I wonder if Gamestop will goad Nintendo into releasing Last Story and Pandora's Tower?

It is good business to both part. Because Gamespot has a good predictor of sales based on pre-sales, Nintendo can print the right number of copies without the risk of having a huge number of unsold copies in the warehouse. Also, by selling to just one company, the distribution is far cheaper.

From the Gamespot side, this scheme will bring hardcore gamers to their shops. The right kind of customer they seek out. Considering hardcore gamers are more likely to purchase multiple games in a visit, they will get a nice profit from the deal. Also, I don't see them expending much money with marketing. I don't antecipate any TV spot or other expensive divulgation. They will print some promotional material to the shops, give a Game Informer cover and do some online adds.

TalkBack / Re: GameStop Approached Nintendo to Publish Xenoblade Chronicles
« on: December 14, 2011, 05:40:25 AM »
I wonder how this game will be distributed outside the US. I asked Gamestop if they would allow me to buy the game and have it shipped to a friend's place in the US. I got no answer so far but I was told by others that they don't do it. The problem is that is the game I want to buy from Gamespot as it will give them an incentive to do the same with Last Story.

This situation is better than nothing but I am still disapointed with NOA. Despite the talk at the last E3 of getting back in the grace of the hardcore community, it is clear that they are afraid to release anything but their classic franchises and family oriented games. At least, they could show their customers some respect and drop this PR bullshit.

TalkBack / Re: GBA Ambassador Games Coming Out This Week in Japan
« on: December 14, 2011, 05:27:16 AM »
Great! The NES's list was somewhat disappointing as it included a mix of classics with games that there is no reason to play anymore. However, the GBA list is much stronger as there are much fewer weak titles.

I hope they are doing a new IP but I would take anything they bring to the table.

Looks like something I would like. However, I wonder how robust is the online multiplayer mode? Specifically, how it handles when one of the players drop? This might be very important in a long game such as this.

Now I have to find out if Nintendo will distribute it on Latin America or I will have to import it. So far, it became only slightly less complicated for me.

TalkBack / Re: Dragon Quest X Is an Online RPG
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:26:24 PM »
This read to me as shower of cold water. I have little interest in any kind of MMO, although it is not clear to me that this is the case. If it plays like DQIX, I wouldn't have much problem with. Still, it is not clear how the online portion would be handled and I will have to wait till I can have a final opinion. That said, the online fee is another big issue. I am pretty sure this will stick with the Japanese market but it might be a big barrier in the anywhere else. I have no intention of playing a game with such fee, no matter how cheap it is. I guess there is a good chance they will not charge it in the West but we will have to wait to see.

I thought this would be one of the high points of the Wii. How disappointing it is unveiling to be.

TalkBack / Re: Breaking Down the 3DS Ambassador Program
« on: July 28, 2011, 04:26:10 PM »
Considering my 3DS is about one month old, I am not totally happy with this. Still, it is not a bad offer and I am very pleased there are many games I would be willing to buy in the list. Hopefully, the new price list will warm the sales and more games will be available to the 3DS.
