My initial thoughts reading those numbers:

- It looks like their revised projections from back in February were fairly on the mark. It'll be interesting to see the stockholders' response to this now that the official numbers are out, though it should help that the losses are not as bad as projected (-$228 million instead of -$240 million).

- 3DS hardware sales are starting to dip despite a relatively strong release year in 2013. A hardware revision can't be too far off in the future. The software's performing nicely, though I have to wonder if they'll be able to post similar numbers this year, as it kind of feels like they blew their software load last year. If Nintendo's serious about trying to salvage the Wii U, you'd think all their software resources would be going into Wii U games now, so I don't know where all that 3DS software is going to come from.

- 2.72 million Wii Us sold last fiscal year and 6.17 million overall sold is just pathetic. That 3.6 million FY March 31, 2015 projection feels awfully optimistic considering what Nintendo has revealed so far and where the Wii U is right now in comparison to the Xbone & PS4, but at least it's substantially more realistic than last year's hilariously out-of-touch projections.

3ds hardware needs a price drop to encourage new sales. It's been two years since a price drop, it's time for another. I feel like Nintendo is reluctant to lower 3ds price because they are losing money on the Wii U but I think the drop needs to happen to get the market excited.

With MK8, SSB, and likely a price drop, I think 3.6 is reasonable for the Wii U. This should be the best sales year for the Wii U though. Lifetime will probably fall in the 14-15 M range.

Nintendo posted some negative cashflows this year.  They're losing less cash from operations, which is good, but probably means they're trying to run leaner: a conservative approach.  (Pair that with them reducing short term debt.)  But nearly all of the negative cash flows seem to be from stock buy back.  They also seem to be selling off a few more short term investments, which probably isn't much to worry about.

Also, did Nintendo announce that they were building a new facility?

3.6mil in a fiscal year that will see the release of a Mario Kart and a Smash Bros. is reasonable. What they'll need is a Fall game to really help boost sales instead of depending on the holiday rush.

Wii U is beyond saving at this point. I think Nintendo will just push to make the console profitable and ride it out until at least half-way through the current generation.

I think 3.6 million is a laughable projection.  I don't see how things will get better.  The Wii U is toast and its reputation as a flop with no future is going to keep people from buying it.  Mario Kart and SSB won't do **** because NSMB and Wii Sports and Wii Fit were all huge hits on the Wii and they've done jack squat on the Wii U.  Why would these cliche unoriginal cookie-cookie sequels move systems when those other ones did not?

2.72 million is like what you expect a hit GAME to sell in a year, not a console.  Can you imagine looking at this from a third party perspective where in order to have a hit you have to sell at 1:1 ratio for the amount of consoles sold for the entire year?  Grand Theft Auto V sold almost twice the entire Wii U's lifetime sales in a span of 24 hours and that game COULD be on the Wii U in theory but isn't.  Nintendo's own game, Pokemon X/Y, has sold about twice the amount of the entire Wii U userbase.

So I don't get 3.6 million.  How often does a console that sells this poorly start selling better as time goes on?  I would assume it would just sell worse and worse each year.  Now when they miss this projection surely Iwata will get canned, right?  Maybe we need another year of delusional Nintendo to inspire them to get their act together.  They're not facing reality yet if they still think they can salvage this.

Until their marketshare drops below the baseline 20%, 4million consoles in the next 10 months is solid figure.  I think its foolish for anyone to assume they have the inside track to Nintendo's 2014/15 idea. "Hurt ain't dead", so until they are dead I like the renewed focus on the WiiU. Still have  things going for them.

The best lineup of software thus far.

More attractive price point.

A more realistic expectation of there  product, thus not to be blindsided by not knowing what they have.

How much was the recorded loss that Sony posted recently? It was somewhere in the ball park of 1.3 billion. This is despite the record profits of the PS4. Granted Nintendo is losing money, but Sony's loses are three times as large as those of Nintendo. Nintendo can turn it around a lot easier than Sony.

3.6 million sounds reasonable to me, in a year with Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, and possibly some other games like X.

Mario Kart and SSB won't do **** because NSMB and Wii Sports and Wii Fit were all huge hits on the Wii and they've done jack squat on the Wii U.  Why would these cliche unoriginal cookie-cookie sequels move systems when those other ones did not?
NSMBU still did give the Wii U a successful launch, so it's done something. I don't think that series was ever really a system-seller though. Wii Sports didn't do anything because it was just an HD re-release of the original Wii Sports with online, and it wasn't a retail disc and didn't have much advertising. If they made an actual sequel, I think it would have gone over better. Wii Fit U didn't look like it added much, and I think the whole videogame exercise thing was just a fad that's over now.

Both Mario Kart and Smash Brothers are a much bigger deal than those three examples. If Smash Brothers can sell GameCubes then it should be able to sell some Wii U systems, that game has a lot more fan appeal than any other series. Mario Kart's been consistently popular as well, it also sold some GameCubes, and isn't a fad like exercise games. These games aren't going to boost Wii U to the best-selling Gen VIII system, but 3.6 million in one fiscal year sounds entirely possible and realistic to me.

3.6 million would not only be the Wii U's best year yet but if reached would account for more than one third of the total system sales.  3.6 million is more than 50% of the current lifetime Wii U sales.

3.6M is the lowest expectation you can have while still keeping your nose above water.

That is a pathetically low amount of units to sell in a year for the system that follows up the Wii which would sell 3.6 mill in Nov-Dec., but only because they couldn't make enough to sell more than that.

They are on track for mid-teens of millions of units sold after a 5 year life span, which is far below even the GC. Nintendo needs a BIG shakeup on the software side if they are going to pull out of this nosedive. I would suggest the Pokemon MMORPG, but even Pokemon deserves much better than that.
They need some piece of must-have, Sony & MS are trying to copy, software, and they need it to show up this Xmas. It's time to take off the oversized Mario gloves and pull out all the stops, to at the very least set up something solid, if not phenomenal, for the next round.

C'mon guys, we have to stop comparing WiiU to Wii for sales figures. The Wii was an exception to the Nintendo rule. PS3 only sold HALF of what PS2 sold. I realize the dire straights the U is in but how much better were you guys expecting LTD? 10mil? More? I know the system is on life support, but its still in 2nd Place not 3rd. 3rd place might be inevitable but I don't believe in fate.  The market has changed dramatically. Consoles are not the only way to play games anymore and Japan is a niche market. While on the surface that may seem bananas but if you think about it it's true. It's time to embrace the horror.

Just because Nintendo says they expect 3.6 million, doesn't mean they're not trying to sell more.  After they overestimated big time last year with 9 million, its not hard to see why they picked something low like 3.6 million.  They have a stronger lineup so the chances are pretty good they'll hit it and if they go over that amount, they can then spin the news to shareholders next year that the Wii U has exceeded their expectations and doing better then ever.

Seriously, all of you saying 3.6 million is too low, what exactly is Iwata suppose to say?  Is he suppose to say 9 million again, or go crazier and say 15 million in one year now?  If he picked a number like that and Mario Kart 8 gives a good boast that raises Wii U sales to 6 million this year, while much higher then last year would still be under expectations.

So once again, just because they said 3.6 million, doesn't mean its the highest number the system can sell this year.

C'mon guys, we have to stop comparing WiiU to Wii for sales figures...... PS3 only sold HALF of what PS2 sold.....  The market has changed dramatically.

If Wii U was on pace to sell half what the Wii sold I think everyone would feel pretty good about the system and its future.  The market has changed but not as drastically as people make it out to be because consoles are still selling well.  There may be a point in the not too distance future that console sales fall off a cliff, but we aren't there yet.

PS2 (155M) + Xbox(24M) = 179M  PS3 (80M) + Xbox 360 (80M) = 160M (and there will be several million in sales yet for these consoles).

The biggest change was Sony lost their dominance as the Xbox 360 gained prominence.  Statistically not much of a drop from gen to gen and if Nintendo is added in with the Wii there was a big growth last gen.

@Luigi Dude, it appears most comments are that 3.6M is too high of an estimate, not too low.  I think 3.6M is obtainable with a price drop, software, and no announcement of a replacement (certainly not out of the range of possibility at least like last years projection).  But I wouldn't want to put money on the line that they will hit the 3.6M.

Ironically, if Nintendo could attract a crowd of Vita like users then it still could be worth it.  The Vita has a really high attach rate last I checked.  There is just a specific crowd that is willing to spend money, and day one money at that, which the Vita is appealing.  That would be Nintendo's best option at the moment.  Unfortunately, that also mean addressing issues like the UI speed.

NES                61.91 Million

SNES              49.10 Million

N64                32.93 Million

GameCube     21.74 Million

Wii                 101  Million

I know it may seem as if I maybe blindly sticking up for them, I'm not. However, they haven't sold half as many consoles as the Wii since a gallon of gas was $1.09 a gallon.

"IF YOU WANNA CROWN THEM, THEN CROWN THIER ASS BUT THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE, AND WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK!"

My point, if there is one. This is who Nintendo is. The Wii, while a phenomenal concept, was a flash in the pan and not indicative of the company's history or future. WiiU is going down faster than a hooker in vegas but I never expected it to do more than 20-30 mil lifetime anyway.

So avg. 3mil per for a 5 year console with a "margin of safety"  than yeah the current Nintendo poised to either break even or have some moderate success.

Plus the XBOXONE will never over take it in sales, EVER! So they'll never have to fight out of last place.

I could be wrong but I don't think M$ is going to sell 900,000 XB1's this month. Also while not the biggest deal in the world MarioKart 8 drops this month (albeit the end) and should push a few systems. Then we roll right into june where...more things are bound to happen.

They sold 455K last month in the US...I don't think it's that big of a stretch. Mario Kart will sell a lot of games, but I don't see any large boost in actual console sales happening.
