The most expensive reward in Gold? New Super Luigi U.

The My Nintendo rewards refresh has brought along a few changes as well as some additional offers for those celebrating summer birthdays.

The new rewards turned over on July 1 and include discounts on Earthbound Beginnings, Fire Emblem Awakening, Kid Icarus Uprising and Mario Kart 8 for gold coins (20 - 140), and Platinum rewards including discounts on Super Mario 3D World and Wii Party U. For those needing to build Platinum coins slowly, a recent Miitomo updated has added a "Question of the Day" worth 2 Platinum for answering.

In addition, the first birthday discounts have begun to appear in North America, offering 30% off a wide selection of games during the month. The list, which may change depending on games already owned, includes:

At this point I'm assuming the real My Nintendo is going to launch alongside the NX. This can't honestly be the best that they can come up with. Those birthday discounts are neat, at least.

It really is the darkest timeline version of what a Club Nintendo replacement could be.

I am actually engaging with My Nintendo extensively, and doing some serious budgeting to make sure I can get things I want.

However, MyNintendo is DEFINITELY lacking a Wow factor for a highly-engaged fan such as myself. I think maybe that boils down to a lack of real exclusives (Miitomo clothes not withstanding). The easiest way to satisfy that "cool item I must get" desire is with neat physical gear ala Club Nintendo, but that's an inventory risk for Nintendo. Still, it would be excellent for some level of physical rewards to return to Club Nintendo, even if it was just for 800 gold coin hanafuda cards.

Another way they could resolve the need for wow is more digital exclusives, ala Twilight Princess Picross. It's a small and super budget game, but the exclusivity, IP, and pure simple joy of picross means I'd rebuy a reskin (Pikmin Picross?) every 6 months happily.

Alternatively they could make my dreams come true and unveil an entire lineup of rewards where I redeem platinum or gold coins for Mii outfits in Smash Bros.

I'll second that digital exclusives in the form of new titles are great, but even easier would be to dip in to the wealth of DS titles or even SNES titles that have yet to be released on 3DS or Wii U! Just getting a VC or Classic DS game that I may own elsewhere but couldn't own digitally on current platforms would be great, and multiple titles could be made available to incentivize continual engagement during each reward period.

I still don't have XCX or Kirby, so maybe I'll use these discounts.

But to echo Kairon, discounts are not sexy.  You know what's sexy? Scarves.  Scarves are sexy.  Yes, I know it's Summer where I am right now.
