Title: Ads
Post by: KingOY on March 15, 2003, 08:28:29 PM
Honestly, what's with all the ads?  You claim to be so great because you're free...  I can't stand this Def Jam Vendetta musical crap.  Among other ads--like the ones that jump on the page and don't go away.

Anyway, I suggest you develop a pay system.  Not where everyone has to pay like on Insider, but where people can pay to get rid of the ads.

I've donated to you twice before (back before you had all these insane ads), so I think it's obvious that I'd pay for such a thing.

I dunno, I don't mean to sound like an ass, but I doubt I'm the only one that feels this way.  I've always liked the site but those ads really try to make me stay away.

Well, that's all.

the adds dont worry me, and the add with music does have a pause button, also i belive alot of people would rather put up with adds than have to pay, i mean.. it would most likely drive off alot of people, dont thing pgc want that

I compleatly agree with KingOY on this one. I've been reading pgc for the past 3 years, and it really upsets me to see how low they've gotten. An into add is a major deterent for all websites that I visit. I avoid IGN and GameSpot as much as possible because of this one simple fact. It's just so irritating to have adds blare in my face before I can get to the content; the reason I visit websites. When I visited the page today, I was truly upset. I'll probably keep coming back, but only until I find another GCN site. Goodbye planetgamecube. It was a grand ol' time.

Ok, just to make you happy, we'll turn all of the ads off for you.  And then we'll close the site tomorrow.  Thanks for your support!

I never said you should JUST turn off the ads.  I'm not an idiot, I know that servers and bandwidth cost a lot of money.  All I said was that that you should create a program where we can pay you to take off the ads.  I think that could be just as successful...

This way the people that HATE the ads can support you another way, and those that don't mind 'em will be just fine.

I actually agree with that.  It's like a donation, but you get a bonus by doing so.  Hell, you can make it a donator bonus.  If you pay $5 per month, no ads for you.  I think that it would work great myself, although I can't afford to do so, or have a credit card.

FYI, IGN Insider isn't the Holy Grail of ad-free game sites. It's better now, but there's still a lot of ads. As soon as you hit the network, you're treated to a click through ad. As you browse the site, you have interstitial ads every ten pages or so. Again, better than it used to be, but it's not the nirvana many of you may seem to believe. What we're getting with a FREE PGC is on par, and in many some ways better, than a PAY IGN.

While i would like to have a service where i could pay to eliminate ads, i just don't think it's feasible right now. Unless the company that serves their ads has some kind of program that would distinguish who gets served which ads, that script would have to be written by someone.

Another great suggestion, yet people aren't going to pay anyway.  So we need to have the ads.

Us "stooping so low" is just lame.  We try to make it as unobtrusive as possible.  Just like Nintendo, we're a business.  We need to make money here too.
