A little bit of Star Fox fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsckKb28eL8
Haven't had a chance to play my copy yet (Kirby Air Riders currently has the slot), but came across this on YouTube so thought I'd share it. It's well-done.

Hahaha! I forgot that Kameo: Elements of Power was there too. It's just that square picture of Donkey Kong racing a couple Espressos that was seared into my memory for the back of the box. Guess Rare's also got to finish the GameCube version of Kameo now as well. Mop it up has opened Pandora's Box here.

LOL! Let's get Rare to also finish development on Donkey Kong Racing and add that to the Switch Online GC library. They can finally fulfill that long-time promise still showing on the back of my GameCube's box. It's not like Rare's got anything else to do with Everwild cancelled. Since Microsoft can't really seem to manufacture much stock for consoles with rising RAM prices, might as well just get their studios to work on making software for the other systems with higher install bases.

Reflecting on Star Fox, let's go back to the SNES. I knew the game existed. I remember the box art cover for it. And on occasions when the public library had some Nintendo Power magazines in stock that I could borrow, I was able to catch some comic installments it had for the game. However, the actual pictures shown of the game just didn't look that interesting to me as a kid. It just seemed to be a bunch of geometric shapes on pretty simple backgrounds and I never bothered to ever rent it or consider trying it.

Despite having a Super Nintendo pretty early in its lifespan, it wasn't until just a bit after DK64 released in 1999 that I owned an N64. It wasn't because of DK. It was just the timing in which my brother and I finally had the money to pool and get the console. And while we were excited to dive into Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 (and I did like being able to rent and play DK64 at that time), I think the long time to adopt to the next generation had an effect on my interest in gaming as I had started being more interested in classic films and catching up on the wide amount of stuff I'd see referenced and talked about but had never watched. As an example, I never saw Star Wars (A New Hope) until 2001 and renting it from good ol' Blockbuster. I remember being aware of all this hype and deluge of marketing showing up for Episode 1 but, having never seen any of those first movies, it just didn't mean much to me or pique my curiosity at the time. Probably atypical of most people's experience since most seem to have seen these movies as kids growing up. But I digress. The conversation was about Star Fox so let's go back to that.

Even without an N64, I recall the hype for Star Fox 64 because introducing a new element that was supposedly going to make gaming more immersive. The rumble pak. And considering rumble has been a part of gaming controllers since then, it lived up to the hype. In some ways, that may still be Star Fox's biggest contribution to gaming. I remember a kiosk in Walmart with the game set-up for people to try and the controller shaking / buzzing and it seemed pretty neat. Yet, after getting an N64, we never bought rumble paks for the controller just like we never bought memory paks for them either. In fact, to this day, even though I've still got the N64 and plenty of games and four controllers for it, I still do not own a single rumble pak for the system or controllers. It was the GameCube and the rumble installed in it that really gave me my real true taste of the feature and it would amaze me for quite awhile during that period. At some point, we did rent the game but Blockbuster did not include rumble paks for rental with the game so when playing Star Fox 64, I have never really experienced it with rumble. No rumble paks for the N64 to this point in time and the 3DS doesn't rumble so nothing when playing that version.

I know from renting that game that we did eventually beat it, at least on its basic path. Looking at the galaxy and being able to spin it around was always pretty cool. I wasn't a big fan of the on-rails aspect of the game. It's sort of like the auto-scrolling Mario levels. Not a big fan of those as I'd want to be able to move around at my own pace. Likewise, the feeling of being forced forward and not always quite ready to do so created a gaming friction in me that made it hard for me to warm up to the game. I think my brother was the one who did beat Andross. My hazy memory of that time just feels I was more along for the ride as he was playing way more of the N64 and other games than I was at this point and more adept at handling the N64 controller. Honestly, I couldn't even beat the final Bowser battle as I struggled to swing and aim with the control stick. It was the GameCube controller that somehow made using an analog stick just click into place in my mind and I finally got much better at operating in 3D spaces. I went back to Super Mario 64 and I could finally handle Bowser just fine. Something finally snapped into place.

I can't recall if my brother ever rented Star Fox 64 and played it more than that first 3 day rental I can still remember. It was sort of disappointing to always have to restart from Corneria and replay levels again and again to advance. It was also confusing to see all these planets in the galaxy and not seem to visit them. I seem to recall my brother being able to figure out or do something that changed a planet along that path but overall it wasn't something we felt compelled to try and work at. Frankly, being able to beat the game within that weekend time span just made it feel sort of short and unimpressive. Even though the instruction manual mentions the Landmaster, I just don't recall us ever playing a level with it. I was surprised again to recently see there was a level with a submarine in it. I know I had learned about it years back but I always just think there are a couple Landmaster levels in this game and that's it besides the Arwing and I'd completely forgotten about that Aquas level since I've never experienced that planet to this date. Nintendo recognized the game could be beat pretty quickly and tried to offset that by encouraging players to seek out the other planets to find some new content that way and to go for high scores in levels to get medals. Playing for high scores just didn't interest me though and, considering all roads lead to Venom, it just seemed like having beaten the game and finished the story was enough. It was surprising to see some comments by people playing a demo of the new game and checking how the points/scoring worked compared to the 64 version as points aren't something I even think about when I think of this game. Likewise, people would often quote dialogue from the game that would just go over my head. Do A Barrel Roll wasn't something that stuck in my mind from playing the game but it eventually did become something I associated with it thanks to others all using and referencing that line amongst others.

So, my first actual foray into the Star Fox franchise didn't make the biggest impression at the time. And I'll pause the reminiscing there. That's a big enough wall of text for now.

Nintendo Gaming / Star Fox (Switch 2)
« on: June 23, 2026, 02:25:54 AM »

Caterkiller just talked about this game in the Switch 2 thread. Wish he had started a new topic on it instead. However, it had also been on my mind to start a topic for this game back when the Star Fox Direct came out and only getting around to it now. :P

I do like the look of that poster. Star Fox 64 is a rare exception for a Nintendo game where it is more about the cinematics I like than actually playing the game.

I want to post a bit more about my thoughts on Star Fox but I know it'll take awhile. Posting this for now to try and motivate me to follow up and see if others also want to talk a bit more on the game (and series also).

Banjo-Tooie hitting the app now.

Banjo-Tooie came to the app in October 2024. In the 21 months since that point, there have been 5 additions in the regular app. DK64, Tonic Trouble, Rayman 2, Killer Instinct and Ridge Racer 64. For the Mature 64 games, Shadow Man and Turok 2 were both added in October 2024. In the 21 months since just Forsaken 64 has been added. That's 6 games in almost two years. Things have really slowed down when it comes to N64 games. What do you think lies in store for the app at this point?

At this point, I'd say there are two major games in Super Smash Bros. and Diddy Kong Racing that people are likely still expecting to show up. With most other Rare games now available, I do think Conker's Bad Fur Day will likely show up for the Mature app at some point. Although Microsoft is now going through a shake-up with a new leader so maybe it doesn't.

Will we see more additions from third parties? I'd like to see Mega Man 64 show up as I'm curious to experience what that game was like. Capcom clearly didn't think there was much interest in the GB Mega Man versions to let them come to the service. Do they put much value in MM64 like they do the NES and SNES games which they keep re-releasing in various collections?

What do you think of the N64 app at this point in time? To me, it seems like the best collection of the N64 library since Nintendo started doing the Virtual Console releases with the Wii and a pretty good representation of the software that made the system special.

Ended up being busy for a few days after my last post and didn't get back to DK64 until that weekend and wrapped up the game on the 13th or 14th. 101% once again.

Ever feel aimless after completing a game? With DK64 over and having been so focused on it, the question was what should I play now? Fiddled around briefly with Star Fox 65, did a couple Picross puzzles and some battling in Pokemon TCG Pocket. But what I really wanted was something more like DK64 so I decided to dive into Banjo-Kazooie. It may be surprising for some but I've never actually played any of the Banjo-Kazooie games before. It's been something on my to-do list for a couple decades now but never got around to it until now. The N64 was more of a lapsed gamer period for me and, while the GameCube got my passion reignited, it was harder to play the games then as rental stores cleared out their N64 offerings. I did finally buy the games sometime around 2017 and was excited to finally give them a whirl and see what they'd be like but there were always other things to play on the 3DS, Wii U and Switch that I kept putting off. Kind of wanted to play them on the N64 first before the Switch 64 Online app but the convenience of it being right there and ready to go had me jump into it that way.

I have played Yooka-Laylee and now that I'm playing Banjo-Kazooie I can really see how much was done in imitation of the latter in the former. I always knew it was meant to be copy of this IP but without the trademarked characters. However, I just didn't realize some of the other ways it imitated the game beyond the obvious.

I've now completed the 6th world so getting closer to the end. I've never really bothered to keep track of the games I've played for the Switch Online Classics on my Backloggery so I suppose I should tackle this again on the actual 64 copy I have to check it off or maybe I should start tracking the Classics and add things in when done. With this focus on DK64 and Banjo-Kazooie while Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time get remakes this year, it seems an N64 renaissance is suddenly occurring for me. Honestly tempted to dive into Paper Mario on the 64 app after I'm done Banjo.

Almost finished DK64. First 6 worlds are complete and just about wrapped up Creepy Castle with a few things to find in the Kong Isles. At 191/200 Golden Bananas right now. The Diddy Kong barrel flying is still as annoying as ever. People complain about stuff like Beaver Bother but that stuff don't bother me near as much as trying to get Diddy to fly through some 2D rings. But it's over and done with. Lots of stuff I'd kind of forgotten about and so there's been a lot of "Oh yeah!" moments as I re-encounter things. Man, this game used to seem so big and levels so huge. It's like that sense of coming back to things after you've grown up and now things seems smaller because you're bigger and what you remember versus actual reality. The game does seem much smaller now after the way gaming worlds have expanded in the past 26 years.

DK64 I expect pretty soon. It would probably be my choice as the next game after Pokemon Snap

Welp, I was way off. Still no DK64. I guess my desire to replay it is greater than most others. Banjo-Tooie finally fulfills the expectation of coming to the app since the first one did.

Four years later! Yikes, it took a long time for DK64 to make it.

He-he-here we go!

So it's finally here, performing for you
If you own a Switch, you can join in too
Get an online plan, with Expansion Pack
And then replay through this Kong attack!
Huh!

DK
Donkey Kong!
DK
Donkey Kong is here!

Obviously, I'm rather pumped about this. Immediately dove into yesterday and again today. Likely take up a lot of my weekend. Thinking about it, it's probably over 15 years since I have last played it. I just can't think of any time where I'd have played it in that span I'm ready to revisit this one again. Who else "is in the mood" and getting their walnuts, peanuts and pineapple smells on?

NWR Feedback / Re: Account deletion?
« on: June 05, 2026, 04:29:41 AM »
I don't think this forum software was ever built with the idea of deleting an account. Otherwise, we'd just be deleting every spambot account instead of banning them and putting them in a hidden view forum where all their junk stuff goes. We've long talked about the age of this forum software and, 25 years ago, the forums that I used and saw back when this type of communication was taking off never had deleted accounts. They usually just banned them. It wasn't a thing with social media like it is now with people wanting to deactivate and delete accounts on various sites. Unless it is an admin thing I can't see, that's the only answer I'm aware of.

But, hey. With the way these forums seem to keep having connection issues and other technical problems over the last few years, it may be that we all have our accounts deleted when the forums crash for good. In which case, problem solved.  ;D  :o  :'(

Lately I've been using the app again a lot more after dropping off around the last half of 2025 as I've been doing a lot of driving lately and get tired of the radio and hoping to find something worth listening to amongst all the lousy ads. Having been back on it, it's made me realize a few things. There's a lot of music I'd like to see that is third party so the content does have its limits. There's stuff that you'd almost think was Nintendo like Professor Layton or Phoenix Wright and will likely not appear on the app. There's some stuff I wonder about like Super Mario RPG since that soundtrack was composed on the Square Enix side of the partnership so would that ever appear on the app? I'd love to see it as that one is full of bangers. On the subject of Smash Bros. soundtracks, there's been the inclusion of third party characters with the Wii. If those soundtracks are imported, will the third party songs be omitted?

On the subject of Nintendo only music, I'll have to elaborate more later. It's late and I'm going to bed.

Not less than a day after disgruntledly reporting about the lack of Xenoblade music (and I should have also mentioned Smash Bros. soundtracks), Nintendo realized they needed to step up their effort for this app and released the soundtracks for two games today! Yoshi (Game Boy) and Yoshi (NES)! That's right, the hugely popular and oft-requested music of the Yoshi puzzler games....

Where's the facepalm emoji for these forums? Or the barfing emoji? *sigh*

Ah crap, everyone! It's like halfway in May and I've forgotten about this game for a couple months. I've only got the 5 games I picked in the draft. I need another 7 to add. What should I be adding, people!?!?! I have just not been following the industry. Are companies still making games?

Movies & TV / The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

General Gaming / Re: 6th Annual NWR Four on Four
« on: May 14, 2026, 04:29:56 AM »
I'll admit. My gaming has definitely dropped off again in the past couple years. I just seem to spend my time on a handful of games here and there. Playing them to completion and then dropping out of gaming again for a couple months before getting to another.

But this year, I feel I've been getting into a bigger gaming spree so far. For one thing, I went on a bit of a shopping spree and picked up a whole whack of games that I've wanted to add to my collection but had dragged my feet on. In the past six months, I've really encumbered myself with stuff to play. I've also found myself a bit less enthused with movies as I'm starting to feel I've really seen a lot of the major stuff I've always wanted to get around to seeing. Of course, even there, my mood can suddenly change. This month on TCM, they're airing a large portion of Yasujiro Ozu's filmography. Up to this point, I'd only seen about 4 of his films so now my DVR is filling up with a bunch of movies as I realized its not always so easy to see some of these films as there are a bunch of them TCM has never aired before and who knows when they might air them again. As well, the library doesn't always have complete collections of foreign filmmakers nor do streaming services air much of the older classics let alone older foreign films. Not only this but just tonight they aired Ed Wood which I've yet to see so that's now on the DVR and there's a bunch of other films that interest me on this months schedule after a few months of low interest. Likewise, TV can be up and done with when new seasons of a show is happening and when its on break but before this recent outbreak of a lot of content I want to get around to watching, it had been gaming I'd been going back to and spending more of my evenings and weekends on.

As such, I actually meant to post a bit with this 4 on 4 thread as halfway in the month, it seemed like something I could have done which hasn't been the case for most of the time this event has happened. At first, I was playing a bit of Metroid Fusion as the Nintendo App had some platinum coin missions and avatars for playing a couple Metroid games. I then switched back to Crash Bandicoot 1 from the N. Sane trilogy. I had started it back in January and then left it but knowing I was about halfway through it, I had wanted to complete it. I got that done and since I don't own a Playstation, I could only do it on Switch even though I would count that as a PS1 game. I then ended up playing Metroid Prime: Remastered and beat that on both Normal and Hard and unlocked all the extras there. That took about a week and was about halfway in April. Knowing about this event, it suddenly seemed kind of doable for once.

I thought about other systems and games I wanted to play on them but I continued on this Metroid kick and decided to finish what I had started with Metroid Fusion on the Switch GBA app. I beat that to completion which I'd put in the GBA category. As for a fourth game, I realized I'd probably just go with Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket which I started playing around Dec. 20, 2024 and I'm still checking in and playing to this day. It's the most I've ever engaged with the Pokemon franchise. I was so close to finally completing all the diamond and one star cards for all packs released which was a bit hard for one pack they only had limited availability on. Just as they released the latest packs around something like Apr. 26 was the same day I finally got the last diamond card I needed to complete the Deluxe Ex set. At this point, I just need 15 more diamond cards and about 9 one star art cards for this latest pack that's been released and I'll have achieved that continued perfection up to this point. Was also blown away to end up getting both immersive cards for this latest set in back-to-back days. The first one I got by doing a 10-pack pull and then the next day I was just opening up a single daily pack and got the other immersive in this set. Normally, I've only gotten immersive cards when the set has been small like 69-72 diamond set instead of these 155 or more diamond sets. Thanks to one immersive card, I was later able to unlock the special mission for the hidden Sobble badge. I haven't been able to get a hidden icon like that for a long time.

Anyways, that's a little recap of my four on four. Technically three of the four were on the same game system but they were different era games and originally for different systems.

Of course. I'd be happy to help you with that. Step 1. Buy some strawberry seeds. Step 2. Plant them in good soil and a nice sunny spot. Step 3. Water them every 4 days and check on them for any pests or weeds that may need to be removed. Step 4. Harvest the strawberries when ripe in about 3 - 4 months. Enjoy!
