Title: 3DS Usage
Post by: Razorkid on May 22, 2011, 05:48:56 PM
Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed on a lot of podcasts and across a few message boards people complaining about how little they play their 3DS. I currently own 6 games with the following play times (gotta love the Activity Log!)
Ghost Recon: 4 hrs 41min (currently playing) Rayman 3D: 8 hr 3 min Steel Diver: 1 hr 24 min (my least played 3DS game thus far) Super Street Fighter IV: 12 hr 36 min Ridge Racer 3D: 23 hr 51 min Pilotwings Resort: 21 hr 17 min
I bought the system at launch and, as you can see, have really been getting a lot of use out of it. Of course I play my system often due to my work schedule/lack of free time at home and my preference in the current roster of games (I own almost half of the launch line up and have really enjoyed myself with every title thus far).
I guess what I'm trying to point out is that the system has plenty of solid titles for only being out on the market in NA for less than two months. So why complain of the lack of games? And on the heels of that, why buy the system for only one game and then complain that there's nothing to play on it like it's been out for 6-8 months with only the same games it launched with? Maybe I'm just being a fanboy and having my internet feelings hurt ::) , but it always bugged the hell out of me when people complained about their being nothing to play on THEIR Wii (due to lack of money to buy all the awesome?) and THEIR Wii was collecting dust (due to bad house cleaning habits?) and now people are already starting up that crap with a system that's been out for how long? 6 or 7 weeks? And what's worse is that the majority of the complaints come from people WHO BOUGHT THE SYSTEM AT LAUNCH! If you are an early adopter, then you are also a person who pretty much knew what was coming in the launch window and what was available day one for software. So their's no excuse to complain about "lack of games" or "my system is getting dusty" because YOU bought the damn thing knowing full well what you were getting into!
I have no problems about people who DON'T own the system yet and complain about software variety and lack of interest until something comes along to make them take the plunge. Those people are backing up their noise with their wallets, which is how it should be. I don't know, I'm just ranting now at this point...
To all those 3DS owners in NWR land, how much usage do you get out of your 3DS?

I agree completely. I see everyone complaining about the launch line up being horrible and there being not enough games. Seriously, have these people never been around for a console launch before? It could certainly be a heck of a lot worse (Ex. DS launch).
I also agree with the Wii. I just don't have the time to play all of the games that I would want to. So either people have way more time to play games than I do or they are too picky.

Mii Plaza: 0:49 3D Sound: 0:07 Dora Puppy: 0:02 3DS Camera: 1:40 FaceRaider: 3:18 Download Play: 1:05 Activity Log: 0:33 (Most Played Lol) Mii: 0:22 SSFIV: 13:18 Settings: 0:23 White Knuckle Video: 0:20 Notifications: 0:18 Friends List: 0:14 (Which Reminds me I have a lot of people here to add) Game Notes: 0:04 Super Monkey Ball: 2:17 AR Games: 0:16 Professore Layton and the Diabolical Box: 5:01 EBA: 1:02 Meteos Disney Magic: 0:07 (Long enough to justify my curiosity for $6)
So... If it had a GBA port FF:IV be pretty big on that list but it doesn't.
So lets see... 27:15 Playing games. I have about 67,904 steps logged.
I don't know if I say thats a huge success for a new system at that cost but, it could be worse. (I spend about 13hrs a week doing schedule WoW raids over 3 days to put in prospective how much time I be thinking so for comparison thats only 2 weeks of gaming. I also beat Portal 2 during the time since it started and put in a bit of time on FF:IV.)
I like the 3DS and I want to use it more but it's not overly compelling right this now.

Chrono Trigger: 18:19 Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition: 11:26 Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow: 9:25 StreetPass Mii Plaza: 3:12
So, a few days after launch, I impulse bought a 3DS. I had the money, and I knew I'd be getting one when Resident Evil: Mercenaries and/or Kid Icarus came out (and I assumed there would not be a price drop in that amount of time). So, why wait? Additionally, the 3DS has better battery life than my old launch DS Phat.
I guess I'm semi-disappointed in Street Fighter IV. I very rarely buy fighters and I haven't really played a Street Fighter game since Super NES. It seems like it's pretty much the same game, just with more characters. There's no unlockables or any real goals to the game. I guess there's achievements, but I don't feel too motivated by them. On the plus, the graphics look good and it's a well polished game. I was expecting to really be wowed by how much the series had improved in the last 17 years... but I feel like it hasn't changed much at all. I was hoping to love it, instead, I like it somewhat, I guess...
I bought Chrono Trigger about a week before the 3DS came out. I found it in a bargain bin at Best Buy. (Guys, Chrono Trigger does not belong in a bargain bin!) I kind of think that the Super NES version is still the best, but it's kind of nice to be able to play it in bed.
And then, because I have gaming A.D.D. and because I got a hankering for some 2Dvania, I started playing Dawn of Sorrow.
The semester just ended and now, I'm working more: this week, 48 hours. Also, I'm playing Diablo II with one friend and Resident Evil 5 with another friend. And I've been trying to finish up Pikmin 2. Oh, and I played through Portal (1).
I'm by no means feeling any "hurt" from a lack of quality 3DS games.
I'm almost tempted to get Ghost Recon. It looks somewhat like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which I loved. But it's also been compared to Advance Wars, which I didn't like. Ultimately, I fear that I'd buy it and not have time to play it.

I've basically only played Face Raiders, AR Games, and made a couple Miis (and got some from the QR code thread). I want to buy a game, but I don't really think anything out right now warrants a purchase. There are some awesome games, but nothing that I want to buy yet. That of course will change with Resident Evil.

Having played all three games perhaps I can comment on this in a hopefully useful manner. For reference, I also did not like Advanced Wars. However, I also got bored with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and quit playing it long before beating it. Whereas in FFTA you generally fight mostly short battles (if I remember right) in Ghost Reacon battles are typically 30-45min with some being up to 1.5hrs. If any of your main characters dies you have to start the battle from the beginning. Playing on the hardest difficultly there were only 4-5 mission that I ever had to repeat and usually it is much easier the second time since you know what to expect. If I was to compare Ghost Reacon to anything it would be Fire Emblem.

Hmmm... let's check out this Activity Log....
100 000 steps taken 160 hours total Play Time
Pokemon White - 81:29 Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - 35:32 (Accomplished solely by my dad) Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - 10:56 Pilotwings Resort - 9:38 Nintendo 3DS Camera - 6:04 (How did I manage to do this?!?) StreetPass Mii Plaza - 4:06 (None of the people in Saskatchewan have good puzzle pieces! But I beat Find Mii!) AR Games - 2:51 Face Raiders - 1:46 (Hilarious game! My Face Collection includes Charlie Sheen and George Bush!) Game Notes - 1:01 (This is a much better drawing tool than the one in 3DS Camera... more colours?) System Settings - 0: 46 Nintendo 3DS Sound - 0:38
... and blah, blah, blah, the rest is boring :)
As you can clearly see, my 3DS has already been used quite extensively (although my copy of Twilight Princess for Wii has 200+ hours on it, somehow!) and I expect it to be played even more as soon as more games come out for it! Also, the battery has only died on me twice! I'm not having any problems with it, that's for sure.

So ~26 hours with 3DS specific experiences. Though I have to say I'm a big fan of the circle pad over the D-Pad (Have been since NES) so, yeah I can see why you want to use it as a DS.

So far I have enjoyed my 3DS. As it has also served as a replacement for my original ds fat. My time according to it goes as following.
1. Pilotwings Resort 9:59 2. Animal Crossing Wild World 6:26 3. Super Street Fighter 4 3:24 4. Street pass Mii Plaza 2:24
Kinda drifts into junk and mingling of stuff after that. So I guess that is over 22 hours spent with it. To me it's such a big upgrade over my original ds, that I'm loving it just for revisiting old titles. Just to see what they look like on a bright screen.

Obviously, Pilotwings was the first game to really sink its teeth into me. Man, I just could not put that down. I just finally got 3 stars on all the missions, including that last little bastard Diamond pedal glider mission, so I'm ready to put it down for a while. I was reading in other reviews that people finished Pilotwings in 8 to 10 hours? Maybe if you're Maverick.
I'm getting into Steel Diver now, which is difficult, but superb. No one seems to like, no, love this game except for me, so whatever.

Yeah, but the thing is, I have an XL, so I'm not going back to that tiny 3DS screen for DS or DSiware anytime soon. The XL...I cannot begin to describe how awesome it is to game on that thing, portability be damned. If the prices for that thing drop sometime soon (which they haven't been, even for used), I'd recommend everyone pick it up if you still have DS games to play.
The circle pad is ridiculously awesome, and surprisingly tough considering I've been abusing it a lot while playing SF43D. When I do double circle supers, I am not gentle.

You're referring to Mercenaries, I assume? I'm hoping that the multi is really emphasized in that game, because if so, it's basically Left 4 Dead meets Resident Evil 4, which will be all kinds of chocolatey awesome.

I got some fairly interesting stats:
192,400 steps:
1st : Pilotwings Resort: 30:18 2nd: 3DS Camera: 21:34 3rd: AR games 11:48 4th: Mii Maker: 6:51 5th: 3DS Sound: 6:19 6th: Streetpass Mii Plaza: 4:54 7: Activity log: 3:40 8: Face Raiders: 1:38 9: Game Notes: 1:35 10: Professor Layton: Future: 1:25
I'm a total shutter bug and street pass and steps associated with FIND Mii has caused me to have my 3DS in my pocket every day so I got more play because of that.

You know what... I think the Activity timer is broke. I was looking at some of my old results and I had 2:17 already on Super Monkey Ball and I ended with 3:49 but I know I played the game for 2 or so hours when I made the push to finish it so Neal and I could argue about the game not being total junk. I had also put at least 30 minutes on it the day before. Maybe it did condense down to that...

I've actually used my 3DS more than I expected. I bought a DSi thinking it'd be fun getting back into handheld gaming (my last handheld was a GameBoy Color). I think I put a total of 80 hours into it in the time I owned it. With the 3DS I kind of expected the same usage, but I'm actually using it a lot more. I've probably put 80 hours into Zelda: OOT 3D alone. All I have to say is great system and Nintendo did a good job with this console.

I would say that about 95% of my total gaming is on the 3DS. I temper that comment by saying that I am married with a 5 year old and a 5 month old, so I really, really don't have a lot of time for gaming. I probably get maybe an hour, hour and a half at most a day. I just cannot find the time to sit myself in front of the the TV or my computer for over an hour at a time. My average gameplay session lasts 5 to 20 minutes, so pretty much portables only.
And hey, I'll admit: I play games in the bathroom. When I'm...ahem, "Dropping off some friends by the pool," if you know what I mean. Not my 3DS, though. My XL has become my official handheld of the bathroom, I've got a spare charger plugged in there so I've just been keeping a game on standby forever. Hey, I love games but I don't have the time to play them, so I have to take advantage of any time I've got.

No shame in that ;D , I'm in the same boat when it comes to having a little one, a wife , and gaming. Most of the games I've completed over the last 6 months have been on a portable system.

Yeah, in retrospect, I think the best gift a gamer can get when they're expecting a child is either a 3DS or 3DS games. One thing that I never expected before becoming a parent was just how much time I spend waiting to do something. Like waiting to burp my child while my wife is breastfeeding. Waiting to go somewhere while my wife is changing an unexpectedly soiled diaper. My youngest just recently learned to roll over, and I play 3DS next to her while she's sleeping because we're afraid she'll roll over and be unable to breathe, so someone's gotta watch her. And while a PSP would probably fill the same role, the whole flip-it-closed-to-suspend thing is so easy and intuitive. Well, that and I love Nintendo games.
And when I play my Wii, there's just so much crap I've got to get ready. I've got to fish my wiimote out of my ottoman, decided what I'm going to play and figure out whether I need to get out my nunchuck or my motion plus, walk over and pick out a game, stick in my Wii, turn on the TV, set my AV receiver to GAME, take out my headphones (since I'm invariably playing at night when my family is sleeping), stick them in the AV receiver, bring it back to the couch, etc.. This can take a few minutes, which is fine if you're going to play for 3 hours straight. But I might just be playing for 10 minutes, so that is a huge chunk of my very precious off time.
So yeah, portables make things that much easier. And I hate Angry Birds, so that's that.

After about a month with my 3DS, play times are ok. Probably higher than they deserve to be for some applications since there isn't much competition. The Activity Log does a really nice job of tracking and displaying times... although I've heard some people question how accurate it is.
Top 10 Games: Starship Defense 16:08, 24 times PiCTOBiTS 15:25, 51 times Donkey Kong 6:28, 21 times Metroid 4:31, 14 times Pokedex 3D 4:14, 99 times (I think this got left on one day when I walked away from the system) StreetPass Mii Plaza 2:20, 28 times Super Mario Bros. 2:06, 14 times Pop Island Paperfield 2:03, 13 times Animal Crossing: Wild World 1:44, 6 times Rytmik Rock Edition 0:42, 5 times
Noteworthy Apps: Netflix 10:26, 33 times Nintendo eShop 8:56, 39 times Internet Browser 5:07, 47 times Game Notes 2:05, 15 times
Can't wait for Flipnote Memo to arrive.

Pokedex 3D 4:14, 99 times (I think this got left on one day when I walked away from the system)
If that happened, it would increase the number of hours, not the times it was played, unless you accidentally rigged up a machine that continually opened and closed the game.
Speaking of, I noticed that your play times have low averages compared to the number of times you played each game. I'm curious, do you play in short bursts a lot? Driving to work? On your work breaks? During commercials watching TV?

Did you try all of your DS games just to get their icons to load in the log?
Maybe... :):D:D
190 Titles - 226:14.
I wish I had more time to play. My number one game is New Super Mario Bros - all from vs. mode sessions. :D

Doesn't the log book cap at 128 titles? Are you going to email a complaint to Nintendo about the limit, since you can't check your stats for some of your games?
I actually think 128 is a bit of a small number. Since it counts system software, downloads, regular DS, and 3DS games, it seems like a number feasible reachable by a large number of 3DS owners.

It's got 30 pages with eight slots on each page - looks like the cap is 240.
Here's something odd though - It lists me with 190 titles, but I have 24 full pages plus three icons on the next page - 195. Weird.

For the Pokedex app, I usually never use it for more than 1 or 2 minutes to get the newest Pokemon when it's available. So even using it 99 times - roughly 3 times a day since getting my 3DS - the play time should be shorter than what is listed.
As for my playing times being short in general, between work and family commitments I rarely have more than a few minutes at a time while waiting for the next event to start. My only extended gaming sessions are during the evenings, and only once or twice a week at that. (There is also the "gee, wow" factor where friends want to see the system and play a couple of games just to see the 3DS in action.)

My 3DS has 16 pages. Does it expand to 30 pages once 16 are filled up?

How the hell did you play Ocarina for 91 hours? Even if you played through both the regular and master quests, that seems like too long.

Here's weird... I have 30 full pages plus seven icons on the 31st page - 247 games... but my system says I've only got 242 games...

Maybe it's not counting the bundled apps in the total even though they appear in the logs.

I suppose my sister helped; I lent her my system and the game during the summer and she completed it twice.
...And I 100 percented both versions.

Being as I'm something of an Activity Log addict, I figured I'd better post my stats:

Been meaning to do this for a while. My list currently looks like:
Dagon Quest IX (76.11) - Great game. There is a ton of post-game content to go back to... but after doing some I decided to take a break and play some other stuff too.
AlphaBounce (68.33) - Maybe the perfect casual game? Once you get most of the power-ups it becomes less engaging, but still easy to pick up and play a level or two at a time.
Netflix (60.46) - The fastest growing app now that my wife realizes she can easily watch movies in bed.
Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (39.37) - For all the talk about being similar to X-COM, it's a pale imitation. Still good though!
Internet Browser (24.58) - Suspect this has been artificially inflated by accidentally leaving the 3DS open after looking up a FAQ or fact.
Freakyforms (24.09) - Maybe the biggest surprise? I didn't expect to play this game so often, but it's strangely addictive and fun for the entire family to play.
Nintendo eShop (20.32) - Another app that was probably left open a couple of times, but with videos and other content ready to browse it still got a lot of use early on while looking for good DSiWare.
Starship Defense (17.24) - Aced the game. Well made, but somehow I expected it to be a bit more difficult. Wish I knew you could hold L to speed things up before the last few levels.\
PiCTOBiTS (16.32) - Great music, and a fun game. Very pleased with this one.
Swapnote (16.14) - Sadly, my skills as an artist are nearly non-existant. Love seeing what others come up with though.
Pushmo (15.00) - Solved everything, but haven't spent much time with level creation. Need to look up some of the best user-generated content sometime to extend gameplay.
Ghost Trick (12.42) - One of my favorite games released last year. Top notch story, shame there isn't much replay value.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (11.52) - Solved everything. Layton-riffic!
Nintendo Video (10.23) - I know this hasn't been used that much and was simply left open. A handful of memorable videos so far, although still too much junk to be a really useful app.
Zelda II (8.38) - Close to beating this one, but got kind of side-tracked with new games and the GBA Ambassador titles. Will get back to it eventually.
Wario Land 4 (8.09) - Missed one treasure, by one second. Need to give the bosses a second run to fix that. :(
StreetPass Mii Plaza (7.33) - Only a handful of StreetPasses so far, but more than enough play coins to push through the initial puzzles and Find Mii game.
Pyramids (7.11) - Really enjoyed the retro feel and free downloadable levels. Apparently there is now a (user created) level editor available too.
Metroid (6.37) - Lots of good memories from this game, although still wish we had Metroid Zero Mission as part of the Ambassador program.
Donkey Kong (6.29) - Portable Virtual Console got off to a great start with this game. Classic!
Other notable games in order of play-time, not counting apps or anything with less than two hours:
Gargoyle's Quest
Avenging Spirit
WarioWare, Inc.
Rytmik Rock Edition
Suikoden Tierkreis
Pop Island - Paperfield
Fritz Chess
Steel Diver
Super Mario Bros
Zelda Four Swords
Mario vs Donkey Kong
Dragon Quest Wars

Figured I would throw up my Activity Log thus far. Picked up the system first week of August days before the price drop, so got the price drop and the 3DS games.
1) Tetris Axis 65:55 (If you have the game, please swap 3DS codes with me, I like having friends to compare to) 2) World Ends With You 18:53 3) Swapnote 10:18 4) NES Open Golf 8:16 5) Wrecking Crew 7:59 6) Pokemon Soul Silver 7:41 7) Mario Kart: Super Circuit 7:23 8) Super Mario Bros 6:45 9) Pushmo 5:22 (Got this less than a week ago) 10) Netflix 5:02 11) Streetpass Plaza 4:37 12) Yoshi 3:55 13) Zelda: Four Swords 3:46 14) Pokedex 3D 3:31 15) eShop 3:05
Total games/apps: 42 Total steps: 304,136 (Generally, if I'm not in public, when I get to 1000, I turn it off)

Activity Log Notice:
The most "Titles Played" your system will display is 256. Also, it only stores the icons for 32 pages (8 icons per page, or 256 icons). Apparently, it doesn't automatically delete them either.
Oddly enough, when I looked in, it says "New games added" and showed the icons for all the games since I last launched - but only had the first few of them displayed in the activity log. :(

Wow how did you reach 256 different titles played already? That's nuts!
