A clone for the Wii U that is actually quite decent!

On the Wii U eShop, you will find a fair amount of titles that are inspired by other experiences. There are a variety of Flappy Bird clones for example, and these don't sadly add much to the overall formula. The selection of arcade style games isn't grand on the system and the people over at Petite Games are trying to fill that void. With Super Destronaut, they are bringing an intriguing homage to Space Invaders, and it even includes some twists of their own!

When I mean Space Invaders homage, that is exactly what you are getting. You will have to move about left and right and hit the variety of aliens species that float above you. It all controls well on the Wii U GamePad. There is a good weight to the entire experience and it carries on without a single hitch.

Super Destronaut throws in some curves to make it all the more stand out. The game offers various aliens and each species throws very different attacks your way. The big yellow ones bring some hefty spread shots, while the small purple aliens have shots that move from right to left. To combat these menaces, you have to use your wits and the various attacks on offer. While you have your standard buster, by attacking a big red alien, a special temporary weapon becomes available to you. You will be able to shoot rockets, clean the field with bombs or hit multiple rows with lasers. It is quite enjoyable to say the least, and the game moves along at a quick pace.

There are three modes on offer. You can play until your three lives are gone in Classic Mode or score time by completing waves in Time Attack mode. Next to that, you can duke it out one versus one in three minute matches for the most points. The problem with the single player offerings is that you can't share your scores on an online leaderboard and that removes the need to replay the single-player modes.

Super Destronaut looks sharp on the Wii U, though the alien designs could have been more interesting. It is minor in the grand scheme of things, but I just feel that they look a bit strange. They are at least colorful though and that can't be said about the background. It feels all kinds of empty and you just move around in a grid based environment. The music is really catchy though and it brings the vibe back up to the top.

Super Destronaut is a very fun Space Invaders clone for the Wii U eShop. It all plays great and there are various modes to boot. What is a shame is the lack of online leaderboards and the game could have looked somewhat better. In the end, the great pace of the game kept me hooked and I am up for another round right about now!
