So if SMW won, why is SMRPG bolded?

Because that's the one you voted for.

Super Mario Brothers 2 is a battle for Mario's subconscious, it doesn't have Bowser in it whatsoever, Peach and Toad are playable characters, and the enemies include masked shy soldiers, flying masks, walking bombs, egg-spitting transsexual dinosaurs, mobile cacti, inflated ego mice, etc.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is barely a Mario game though. It wasn't designed as one, it was just forced into one.

It was designed by the same person though so it is an honourary Mario game.

Is that a serious question? Of course they aren't because they don't have Mario in them! Doki Doki Panic is a platformer created by the same person who created Mario. I don't think it is any coincidence that it became a Mario game and its characters transitioned into subsequent Mario releases.

They were only transitioned after a long time though, we didn't see ShyGuy's again until SMW2:YI and Birdo never appeared in another Mario game apart from spin-offs.

We did see Bob-ombs in Super Mario Brothers 3 though, and the Ninji was in Super Mario World.

It doesn't really matter though because Jonnyboy117's opinion stands either way.

Maybe we should have an all Mario-game poll in the future. That would be rather interesting.

There are too many games for an all-Mario poll. It would have to be sectioned off into 2D platformers, 3D platformers, etc.

I was thinking more of the 'main-line' Mario games. So Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers, SMB2, SMB3, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, New SMB (World wouldn't be on it because that already won).

Don't forget Super Mario Galaxy. And if you're including New Super Mario Brothers then you have to include Super Mario Land 1 and 2 as well.

That's ten games. All polls thus far have had five.

I forgot Galaxy on purpose because of how recent it is and I've gotten the feeling that a number of people here suffered Galaxy burnout. We can't have them all.

OK, how's this for a list:

SMB2
SMB3
Mario 64
Sunshine
NSMB

We can have a separate poll for handheld games.

If Super Mario Galaxy is too new then why isn't New Super Mario Brothers too new? It was released only a year before Galaxy. Maybe there should be a "no current systems" rule because otherwise the games which would be excluded would be chosen arbitrarily. I'd put the original Super Mario Brothers on the list instead.

NSMB came out in 05, right? And Galaxy came out in 07 I thought. Two years. Plus I am concerned with how long Galaxy is compared to the other games. Plus with Galaxy 2 on the horizon, it feels redundant to have Galaxy 1 on there...though I guess the same could be said about NSMB since the Wii one is coming sooner than Galaxy 2.

I guess SMB, SMB2, SMB3, 64 and Sunshine would be a good set.

New Super Mario Brothers was released over the summer of 2006. And it is currently selling at a faster rate than Super Mario Galaxy so it may be even more fresh on people's minds.

Except I'm sure close to none of those sales are from people on this site or from listeners of the 'cast.

Sunshine is probably the only one I wouldn't blow through in 2 days, plus the summer theme would be fitting right nowandheythisisn'tthenominationthread

James is already bitching enough about having to play Super Mario World. I don't think the crew could handle another Mario game; it'll be a major effort just to convince them to look at SMW with fresh, critical eyes. Hopefully we'll peel back some layers as we did for Zelda 2.

I don't think I've played SMW since I beat it after buying my SNES.  It'll be interesting to run through this one again.  All I remember is I found it quite a bit easier than Mario 3.
