Episode 511: Wordplay Ahead
« on: February 26, 2017, 11:19:33 AM »

All it takes is one comment about treads, and the entire segment is ruined.

Switch still isn't out, and nobody on RFN has a press unit, so we're still Switch-less. Making this show has become increasingly harrowing in its absence.

We start out with New Business, which has increasingly become a misnomer. James has a look at Tank Troopers, and if it seems like Steel Diver: Sub Wars with tanks, it should; Vitei made both of them. James finds this tank rather light on fuel. Jon returns to a classic moment in RFN history, reliving his Wii fridge-cleaning on Wii U. Gui has a good game: Noitu Love: Devolution. This action-platformer is inspired by many different classic games, but builds something all its own. Greg has the newest business, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on 3DS Virtual Console. If only there was some Zelda content coming to scratch his Zelda itch.

After the break, it's Listener Mail. Topics this week: concern about Switch VC, rate my backlog, favorite "hidden features" in a console, and Greg's Gamez for Babiez. You can send us your backlog for review, via our inbox.

Next week it's time for our RetroActive on Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. We'll be recording Thursday evening, mere hours before the launch of Switch. If you hurry, there's still time to get your thoughts to us via the RetroActive thread. Need to be inspired? Here's James trying to play this weird adventure game.

Did someone abduct James Jones and replace him with Andre Segers from Gamexplain?!? The puns are certainly flowing like they are...

as for a favorite feature of a console that poeple don't think about? I'm surprised nobody said the Gamecube handle!

As for me, there was a while where I was using the DS Alarm Clock. the one that probably impacted my life the most though was using the PS2 to use the Playonline Chatrooms to shatter my innocence into a thousand tiny little pieces and spread them as dust in the wind.

I have no regrets.

To the listener who asked about what game to play. I actually just finished playing through Disaster for the first time yesterday. I really disagree about it being a bad game

A quote from myself from a post somewhere else
Quote
Just finished Disaster Day of Crisis
Turns out its actually a great game. I dont know where I heard it being bad.
The name sums it up, there are all sorts of natural disasters happening. All while this is going on, youre trying to take down a terrorist group.
Gameplay is quite varied, from running around escaping disasters, saving people and shooting terrorists.
The shooting part is surprisingly good, it turns into a lightgun style shooter. It can get quite difficult at certain points.
Graphics arent pretty good for the Wii, but nothing amazing. The story is good and can be funny at times.
The use of motion controls isnt too bad, but sometimes it doesnt recognise the gestures, which can get you killed.
Overall, it is now one of my favourite Wii games. I definitely recommend playing it.

Now that I thin about it more, it was probably RFN that told me Disaster was bad, just like in this episode.

I think Nintendo is being smart about virtual console. If they had Super Mario Sunshine at launch that would kill a lot of potential sales for the other smaller launch titles. Nintendo is trying to prop up these developers (like how Microsoft did for early 360 and sony for the 2nd half of PS3). Nintendo maybe able to incentive a developer who only has enough money for one platform to develop for Switch if Nintendo is like okay you are the only game coming out that week. Eventually they may get a limbo or journey which would help nintendo out a lot. If there is a week that is empty, we'll get a Sunshine or a melee.

Hi RFN forum. 1st post in quite a few years.
Thank you gentlemen for reading my question. I have a few points to make if anybody was interested.
Firstly, I wish that was my entire backlog! Those are just a handful full of games I keep meaning to play through for poops and giggles and I noticed that James had mentioned them all at least once. I forgot to include Project X zone and that DS Hercules game in the list.

My backlog is so out of hand that I have promised my family not to spend any money on games this year. My unplayed games for Nintendo systems alone are over 100. So yeah, I have a slight problem.

Why do I have so many unplayed level 5 games? Why because I bought most of them for a couple of pounds on wet afternoon  at Hemel Hempstead Cash Converters of course! But my family won't go in there with me anymore because of the strong smell of body odur.

Oh and Disaster Day of Crisis cost 50p.

I put and an hour into disaster tonight. I ate two massive hamburgers and an enormous water melon slice. I also survived a volcano, earth quake and wiggled the wii mote a bit. But mostly I watched cut scenes. When does it get bad?

It's been a long time since I played through Disaster now; I remember enjoying the shooting sections of the game to a fair extent, but I found the third-person sections to be mostly tedious, and some parts really did nothing good for me at all (the fire tornado sequence in the park, motion driving).

If you'd like better-preserved thoughts from me in text form, here's a link to a hands-on preview I did of the game before its European release (also a window into why my writing career at NWR was less than a roaring success).

Definitely worth 50p though.

Definitely worth 50p though.

Another RFN back-of-the-box quote right there. They should put the game out on Switch VC and put the quote there among other endorsements. :)

My experience playing Disaster: started it with a crowd of IGN forum-dwellers meeting for mostly the first time. We all made fun of the opening scenes, shouted "Steeeeve!" with abandon. It was great.

Trying to play the rest of the game later on my own really didn't live up to that.

Am I being over sensitive, or do Steve and Ray seem a bit callous about all their colleagues deaths in flaming piles of helicopter wreckage?
Maybe that is how they train mountain rescue workers. Maybe the only way to survive something like a volcano erupting under you is to be bro like in the face of death. Dudes til the end.
Anyone with personal experience care to comment.
