Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 732: The Blaster Master Bombshell
« on: July 26, 2021, 09:31:28 PM »
I'm trying to read the show notes about the Retroactive without laughing.

I can't.

So yeah, I mean, come on. You have to.

The Imprisoned stuff (as well as a lot of SS) actually does something well that I think it shares with Wind Waker. There's this whole idea that all of the regular people are just living their lives without a care in the world. Yet, there's something bubbling under the surface that's just inevitably going to come to some kind of head. This makes the player feel kind of empowered, because we know what's REALLY going on, like we're keeping some kind of secret with the game itself, and it puts us in an elite group that really understands the danger lurking beneath the surface. The Imprisoned, as mentioned in the video, is just a sinking ship, while Link attempts to plug the holes in the boat before it fills with water. It's one of the many things across Skyward Sword and Wind Waker that help the player feel like we're just on another level compared to the commoners in the game worlds. Come to think of it, this is also a theme in Link's Awakening. Zelda is always at its best when it creates a sense of peril for the world at large. Sometimes, the denizens of Hyrule know that their world is in peril, and that there lives aren't really great. In others, like SS, WW, and LA, the people are super oblivious to everything, putting Link in the same role as the Men in Black- protecting regular people from the scum of the universe because he's "in the know" and the only one capable of doing the job.

I love Zero Mission for what it is, which for me is a fairly linear Metroid adventure. I just don't have any interest in learning Samus' advanced moveset, and I don't think the game is very encouraging of 100%'ing the game before you fight the final boss. After the credits, I'm never interested in going back through Zebes to collect the other 40% of the game's collectibles. I always wished that more of the game's collectibles could be collected along the way. The just feel kind of designed to be collected after you power up Samus completely.

TalkBack / Re: Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! (Switch) Review
« on: July 05, 2021, 09:57:21 AM »
I feel like some of the reviews and comments I've seen regarding this game do it a disservice. If you happen to see this comment first, please go play the game without reading anything about it. My wife and I knew some vague things about this game, which caused it to call flat for us. After playing games like Undertale, Pony Island, and others, this one just kind of felt like it was trying to hard to copy ideas from other places that did it better. And from what I'm reading, definitely play it on PC if possible.

TalkBack / Re: Quality of Life Updates Announced for Skyward Sword

Loved Skyward Sword but even these QoL improvements aren't enough to make me want to spend $50-$60 on it.

I'm often a defender of this game. The story is pretty terrible, especially given the fact that some of its revelations were already done in Metroid Fusion (making this game seem kind of off-canon). However, I think there are some gameplay ideas here that are really smart, such as Samus' auto aiming. There's also a spot that goes pretty hands off, where you have to fight a spider or something, and I'm like...this should be the whole game. It's ideas like this that make me wish we had a 3D Metroid game like this in the future, but without a lot of the cringey story and gimmicky controls.

I'm actually kind of of the opinion that King Of Cards is fun enough...but I would've rathered that Yacht Club have spent their time on something else over the past 5 years. I kind of would've rathered that they phoned in some extra campaigns and then put heir efforts into a new thing. I get they they want to fulfill their Kickstarter goals, but it's time to just move on already.

And in regards to Wario Land...I loved Wario Land! I thought the first one was so good, and I might be in the minority that I thought it was the best one. I thought the second game lost so much without th world map. I loved revisiting levels in the first game when the tide was low, or when something affected the levels in a unique way. I feel like the only other game to really do that was DKC Tropical Freeze. The first game capitalized on all the reasons I loved Super Mario World, to be honest!

I think I'm gonna need to go buy a bunch of games that only take a half hour each...

Wow, you guys have formatting buttons?? I feel like I just walked into the house of the kid who always makes us take their shoes off.

« on: May 22, 2017, 05:47:37 PM »
As someone who can't see the 3D effect, I think this looks awesome. If I ever have the extra cash and time to make the system transfer, I'd love to have this as my "definitive" 3DS.

Then again, I haven't touched my 3DS since Switch came out.

TalkBack / Re: Circle Pad Pro Supported by Majora's Mask 3D

What does it do? Camera control would be amazing but I couldn't imagine them doing that in a game like this. Is there any of the original code in the game?

Then again, if these games kind of have their roots in Mario 64, maybe it's not as hard as it would seem.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 DLC Compatibility With Online Detailed
« on: November 13, 2014, 03:06:58 PM »
Am I reading this right? If someone is in the game that doesn't have the DLC, the 8 new tracks are blocked out? That's...kind of crummy? Unless I'm reading it right?

Why don't they just have a separate playlist for those who have the DLC, while the original playlist remains for people without it?

TalkBack / Re: Shovel Knight Might Have the Best Use of StreetPass
« on: July 01, 2014, 06:14:16 PM »
Sounds great but I rarely ever Streetpass with someone, let alone someone with the same game (not do I usually remember to check Streetpass enabled events in my games). For the way I play my 3DS, it's just not enough to sway me from the Wii U version. There's just something classic about playing a game like this on a big TV. Some say the low res art helps the 3DS version but it just looks so much cleaner on the TV, and you can see every little detail. Love big chunky pixel art.

TalkBack / Re: Pokémon X and Y Online Features Overview
« on: October 25, 2013, 09:36:11 AM »
Why can't they do this with Mario Kart?? For as much as I've ragged on Game Freak for a lot of things (even regarding X and Y), this sounds too easy. See someone who's online, start a voice chat with them from the game. I don't have to text them or email them or something just to get their attention. It doesn't sound like you have to jump through too many hoops just to talk with a friend.

It's weird how Game Freak may not be with it in regards to certain things ("We had to turn off 3D to make the overworld beautiful"....but then the overworld looks pretty bad), but they seem to "get it" with online.

I wonder if you could try to change it up as you go. I haven't played it, but doesn't the Exp Assist allow you to level up other Pokemon in your party? You could theoretically level up Pokemon more quickly that way, which could encourage you to cycle them out as they become too powerful.

TalkBack / Re: Disney Infinity Launch Guide
« on: August 18, 2013, 07:54:18 PM »
When can we expect to see an official NWR review? We're not sure what platform to get it on (either PS3, 360, or Wii U). I saw some tearing in some footage from another site (I think the 360 version) so I'm wary that the other consoles will have that as well.

16
It's a vicious cycle. Developers/publishers aren't going to fully support the Wii U because the userbase isn't big enough and doesn't buy enough games. Gamers then won't buy the developers'/publishers' games on Wii U because they're obviously just inferior versions.

Huge AA fan. My girlfriend and I played through the first three games on WiiWare and had a blast with them. We're currently trying to play Apollo Justice on my XL, but it's tough. We both can't help but get sleepy while staring down at the 3DS!

Still, this is a series with great music, fun characters, and plot lines that (usually) keep you on the edge of your seat. They aren't perfect. They have problems with pacing, some weird logic jumps at times, and are definitely GameFAQ worthy more than I'd like. The games also live and die by their characters....so if you find yourself in a case you're not into, then chances are you won't be having that much fun for a while (we weren't fans of the Tres Bien case in Trials and Tribulations).

I really can't wait to get through the rest of Apollo Justice, and we have Miles Edgeworth on deck after that. If you're on the fence about these games, the first couple cases of the first game are free on iOS right now. The game looks pretty slick in HD, even though I personally like playing it on a TV with my girlfriend. It's like watching a movie together (a very long movie where you do lots of reading).

18
I couldn't justify spending $50 on this. I don't want to say that they didn't put a lot of work into this release, but they didn't put as much work into it as they did the original release....and right now those prices are way too similar (if adjusted for inflation).

TalkBack / Re: Limited Edition Zelda Guide Boxed Set Announced
« on: July 19, 2013, 01:21:39 AM »
Hmm, kind of an odd selection of games, no? I wonder why Majora's Mask isn't on there if the rest of the 3D games are.

20
I partly agree with you Jon, but at the same time I do like the variety Nintendo brings to the table (at least in regards to something like not making people pay for online play). Still, I have to agree...with the Gamepad not being as compelling, it makes all of Nintendo's flaws stand out like a sore thumb. Their control input is supposed to be what makes them stand out. The idea, I suppose, was that the different controls would be enough to offset the graphics technology. When the controller isn't pulling its weight, I just feel like I have a console that, by all other accounts, is inferior to the others.

The games will come out and sell well, but at the end of the day, Nintendo is going to be looking at a situation where their games sell well and no one else cares. If that's the endgame, then yeah, sometimes I wonder what the point of a Nintendo console even is.

It used to be the controller, but if that's the case, maybe they need to partner up with someone else who knows what they're doing in all other aspects of console manufacturing.

This company can be absolutely baffling.

Loved Sonic 2 on Game Gear, but I think it was because it was the only GG game I had when I was a kid. I wish they would've just given us the Master System versions. Aren't these games simply worse versions of those games with lower resolution?

Interesting to see an air gauge for swimming, since the old DKC games didn't have this. I remember levels where you had to get out of water before it would turn to ice or lava, but they could always breathe underwater. These games are getting too realistic for me, yo.
