TalkBack / Re: Comparing Wii & Wii U Launch Lines
« on: November 20, 2012, 12:59:46 PM »
I showed up to my Wii launch line at 11PM the night before launch. The store opened at 8AM the next day. I was 11th in line. That Best Buy had 83 units available for non pre-order people, and the line hit 83 at around 3AM. Absolutely crazy.

Wii U launch was very different this past Sunday. I had a pre-order, but I still showed up 2 hours before the store opened. I was first in line. About 30 minutes later, the first non pre-order person showed up. 10 minutes before the store opened, an employee handed out tickets to everyone in line who wanted a Wii U. 10 tickets were handed out. I had about 14 people waiting in line behind me when they let us in to pick up out consoles.

Quite the different experience, to say the least. Wii launch was insane. Wii U launch... not so much. I wonder how the 720/PS4 launches will compare. You have to imagine Microsoft will do a TON of marketing for their new console.

I'm okay with this.

Looks like NOE uploaded the box art of 3 GBA games on their press server. Just a mistake, or could we be getting a nice surprise announcement at the European Nintendo Direct this Thursday?

@RichIGN
NOA/NCL Nintendo Direct is 3DS related. Smaller focus (probably a single game). NOA likely comes tomorrow but TBD. Take "shortly" liberally.

I'm hoping Paper Mario, with a White 3DS XL North America announcement.

Unreal. They seem to just do them whenever they feel like it.

Hoping they touch upon the eshop and online infrastructure.

There is no scenario where the Nintendo console gets "real" third party support unless it does exactly what the third parties demand. That is, the box needs to be as powerful as the competition, no "gimmick" controller, no weird software format

Everything you just said is true of the Wii U for at least a year or two.

Then where's Tomb Raider? Resident Evil 6? Bioshock Infinite? Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance? Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes? Grand Theft Auto IV? Just to name a few.

Just read this quote from Kojima:

Quote
"Wii U is kind of a special case," Kojima said via translator at a press Q&A last week. "The way the player interacts with the device is very different than any other device out there. So if I were to make a game for the Wii U, it would have to be a unique game."

Nintendo probably forces the third parties to make the games compatible with the controller screen, and those devs aren't willing to spend the time/money to do so. The "unique game" Kojima speaks of are the Umbrella Chronicles of the world, not the Resident Evil 6s.

They need to put that damn Kickstarter up and take all my money.

11
This isn't really a huge deal to me as I've always been a multi console owner, but you know someone is going to ask EA why there is little support for the Wii U in, say, two years, and their answer will inevitably come back to Mass Effect 3's failure. "Well, Mass Effect 3 didn't sell nearly enough copies on Wii U. There just isn't an audience for that kind of game on a Nintendo console!"

It's the classic Nintendo third party cycle.

Third party puts out "test game" on Wii:

Successful - "Great! This audience just eats up these low budget test games! Lets keep making more!"(Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside Chronicles)

Failure - "There is no market for these games on a Nintendo platform" *third party support dies*

There is no scenario where the Nintendo console gets "real" third party support unless it does exactly what the third parties demand. That is, the box needs to be as powerful as the competition, no "gimmick" controller, no weird software format (N64 cartridges and GC miniDVDs, I'm looking at you!).

They haven't had that winning formula in the eyes of the third parties since the SNES. And even still, if this theoretical "perfect" Nintendo box was someday released, I could see third parties ducking it nonetheless, in fear of competing with Nintendo's properties.

My conclusion: You need another console if you want strong third party support. Especially Western third party support. It's pretty blatantly clear that Wii U won't be getting much third party support from Western devs, as demonstrated by the complete lack of big 2013 multiplatform games (Bioshock, Tomb Raider). This will only get worse when PS4/720 drop.

I ain't even mad. Wii/PS3/360/PC master race reporting out  :cool;

12
I think we all knew this was coming. But a couple of weeks before the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 drops? Seriously?

No Rayman. Makes sense, as it would have probably been destroyed by NSMB.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Will Be Region-Locked
« on: September 25, 2012, 03:05:26 PM »
Not surprising at all. Every Nintendo console has been region locked. Expecting the Wii U to break that trend would be silly. The 3DS' region lock, on the other hand... that hurt.

The question is, do I hold out for a potential homebrew solution for region free gaming, or do I bite the bullet and import a Wii U from Japan? Play Asia is asking for $450 + shipping for the Base model.

hmm.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Day 1 Launch Games!
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:16:02 PM »
I have been hearing from the internets real complaints about this launch lineup and I must tell everyone complaining are you CRAZY!!!!

This is literally the best launch line up day one of any system.

Yes, there are ports coming out on the system...but there are also plenty of new games, and games to fit all genres and all gaming audiences.

The more I think about this launch lineup the more I think Nintendo will have a good chance of starting strong and staying strong...and when people cry but you can buy those same games on the current systems...yes, you can...some of them, but you also don't get a shiny new system with new controller, and a next generation system...all system launches have some ports of old games...it happens.

But a system launching day one with 20+ games is terrific...and if they get even more than that...amazing.

I've never understood people's need to have this many good games at launch.  With the system costing $300+, and each game coming as $60, the price of buying all these games is incredibly prohibitive.  When I got a system as a kid, I was lucky if I could pick up 3 games, and then it would still take me a few months before I'd get through those games.

I guess this way maybe by the time I finish up the first couple of games, some of the other launch titles might be available on discount.

Yup, this is exactly how I feel. At a console launch, quality>quantity. Since the NES, Nintendo always had that one killer app at launch, that one game you'd pick up and it would last you the entire gen and beyond.

NES had Super Mario Bros. SNES Had Super Mario World. N64 had Super Mario 64. Gamecube had Melee, which was out maybe 2 weeks after launch. Admittedly, Wii didn't have a game that fits that definition, but a mainline Zelda title was for damn sure a huge title on launch day, and Wii Sports was pretty great for that first year, especially as a free pack in title.

I'm not interested in buying multiple games at Wii U launch. In fact, I've never picked up more than one game with a new console or handheld in my entire life. I have the patience and discipline to spend $300 on a console and not another $300 on software.

Up until now, this has served me well. As I mentioned above, each Nintendo console has had their killer app at launch. Wii U does not, unfortunately. NSMB U will be my launch day game, but that series has never really resonated with me all that greatly. Nothing else looks all that appealing. Nothing else screams "You just picked up a new console! Buy me for $60 now, on top of the $300 + tax you just spent!"

I guess what I'm trying to say is... Wii U's launch lineup isn't all that strong. I suppose there will be something for everyone in the sense that a ton of genres are being represented... but back in the day, there was something for everyone and that something was a fucking masterpiece with Mario in the title.

16
Where can you still buy a Wii U? The answer is... anywhere!

All you have to do is start lining up outside the store 12 hours before it opens on November 18th. My Wii camp out experience back in 2006 was great (besides the freezing weather), and I'll be doing it again this year with Wii U.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Super Smash Bros. WiiU (& 3DS)
« on: September 22, 2012, 10:10:16 AM »
I imagine niche characters like Shulk would be the last DLC characters in Nintendo's mind. With a game like Smash Bros, you can expose the lesser known characters to more players than ever before (see Marth and Roy in Melee). If it wasn't for Melee's success, we probably wouldn't have Fire Emblem in North American today.

I could see them offering a "Melee pack" or "Brawl pack" of characters, consisting of a couple of newcomers from each game. Old stages will probably be available as DLC as well. Don't forget music. Alternate costumes? New 1P modes? Trophies and stickers?

The possibilities are endless with DLC in a Smash Bros game.

« on: September 22, 2012, 10:04:38 AM »
I already have a nice 500GB portable hard drive for the Wii U. Besides my Base Wii U and NSMB U, I'll probably be picking up a Wii U Pro controller and nothing more.

Europe is getting a Nintendo Direct this week!

http://www.gamereactor.es/noticias/33401/Shibata+define+Wii+U+para+Espa%F1a/

Nintendo Direct 13th 4PM for Euro people, Nintendo just confirmed. Wii U will be out at the end of the year.

Just waiting on a Japan Nintendo Direct now.

EDIT: Looks like the article is down. Did the Ninjas get to them?

I'm sure we'll get direct confirmation from NOE later today.

EDIT 2:

Update from NeoGAF:

Not a mistake

Nintendo Spain fucked it with the first email, they forgot to write about embargoes and ****. Two minutes later I got a message with the embargo thingy, until 4pm here in Spain.

So maybe they just took down the page after the second email.

So confirmation later today, hopefully.

Looks like NSMB U is going to be on the cover of Game Informer in their October issue.

First time Mario has been on the cover in 16 years.

Quote from: GameInformer
Gaming's most famous face has graced our cover on a few occasions, but it's been 16 years since our cover story has focused on one of his adventures. We recently had the chance to visit Nintendo of America to play New Super Mario Bros. U, but that's not all we did at the studio. In addition to our ten-page Mario cover story (featuring an interview with legendary designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka), we also have an extensive feature that will prepare you for the impending launch of the Wii U.

And people say Nintendo isn't ready for HD development... they've been ready for 9 years!  :P: : : :

Wind Waker is still the best looking game I've ever played.
I'm guessing you are a Nintendo only gamer?

Nope. I've always been a multi-console owner, and nothing has come close to Wind Waker's beauty.

Okay, maybe Journey. But that's it.
Interesting.  Have you played WW on the Dolphin emulator?  I've heard it looks pretty good on that.

My personal favorite looking game is FFXIII.  Everything just looked pretty to me and looking at the scenery in the game gave me a sense of calm.  I always thought WW looked great, but felt there were too many flat colors.  If they were to make WW on the Wii U now without ever having made it on the cube, I think it would definitely rival anything out there.  For what it is, it probably was the most beautiful game of its time though.

That's why everyone has their own opinion and their own preferences on art style. :)

I have indeed played it on Dolphin. Only one word to describe it: Sublime. If your PC is strong enough, I highly recommend giving it a play. Certain games like Wind Waker, the Galaxies and Smash Bros Brawl look like totally different games running in that emulator. Mind boggling to say the least.

It would be a crime against humanity if Nintendo doesn't release a Wind Waker HD Remaster for the Wii U.
