General Gaming / Re: Up for an uber retro style challenge on PC?
« on: July 03, 2014, 01:52:56 PM »
Yeah, I've mostly lurked for the past several years. lol

Hopefully nobody minds, I hate the idea of being that annoying spambot-ish dude. But, I've gotta get the word out somehow, right?

Besides, it's a quality game, especially if you like 'em tough.  ;)

General Gaming / Up for an uber retro style challenge on PC?
« on: July 03, 2014, 09:15:20 AM »
Reaching out for support here- I've just released my arcade high score/JRPG/roguelike The Bounty. The game has been a massive labor of love, and it's turned out pretty great. It's only on PC (well, you can play it on Mac with WineBottler or something similar).

So, one player described it as "This is like Roguelike Dragon Quest with all the sadistic insanity of Lufia 2's dreaded Ancient Cave area!" He pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's retro, and console styled... but a really unique amalgamation of ideologies and styles.

So, give it a shot! There's a free shareware (not demo, shareware damnit) version to get you primed- and the full version is only $5, and 5% goes to Extra-Life in benefit of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

You can find info on the game on IndieDB here-
http://www.indiedb.com/games/the-bounty
You can get the game from itch.io and www.gwwentertainment.com/thebounty.
It's coming to Desura, Indiecity, and Steam soon as well.

Thanks everybody; the next game is being built in Unity, so a Wii U port is definitely happening!

I think you inadvertently figured out the ten Amiibo figurines that I'd MOST desire.

Wow. I was a little surprised to find a 7.5 score anywhere, but it's still just a dude's opinion. Is this really a reason for a backlash; just because a reviewer didn't think the game was "all that"?

Besides all of that, I personally look at MK as a competitive game- which means the metagame is king, and we won't figure that out for a while. Until then, it's pretty, it's fun, and it's the only Mario Kart out there on a console*.

Isn't the 9M goal a total install base through the fiscal year? Ending in March? Weren't worldwide sales sitting at 3.5M this summer? This sounds more like a blogspam article than a NWR piece.

General Gaming / Extra Life 2013- Over 50 hours of Smash in St. Louis!
« on: October 29, 2013, 01:33:12 PM »
What's up everyone?
I wanted to extend an invitation to check out my attempt to break the "longest time spent playing a fighting game" record. I'm doing it with Brawl, and reason behind this insanity is to raise money for Children's Hospitals, through Extra-Life. I'm starting it at 5PM central on Friday, Nov. 1st; and will continue until I exceed the record of fifty hours or collapse trying.
We'll have competitors rotating in and out of the game, so it should be a pretty fun watch as well. It's all going down at http://www.gwwentertainment.com/extra-life.

This is all happening at my place in St. Louis, MO. If anybody wants to come out, hang, play, and help keep me from dying, just get with me for an address. Note- This event is kid friendly.

NWR Mods- If you want to embed the stream on this site, you're more than welcome to. Just please let me know.

Thanks everyone!

I'm certainly picking this up when there's a lull in work/projects; primarily for local multiplayer. These games were so good, but such a money sink in the arcade.  As for that whole voice chat thing... there is no reason to leave it out, for real. That said... am I the only person who almost never uses voice chat? I'm not an MMORPG guy, but since starting to play over the net with Doom, voice chat has done little more than annoy me. "Less chat, more splat".

I have four kids, that can be awfully heavy handed. This is a very good move. Thanks to the price, Santa might be bringing a couple of these for the kids to fight over. Maybe then they'll leave our 3DS alone and stop creating extra folders all the damned time. :)

It's really easy to share to other social media, though it isn't a single button press or anything. If you put something on Miiverse you can access it via the web version, and from there share your post to FB/Twitter, or save the individual image and go from there.

Carmine's closing bit is profound. Dude gets it, and summed up Nintendo better than I've ever read.

Words can't describe how good the first Bayonetta is; and it looks like the sequel is coming along beautifully.
If you think normal is crazy, wait till you try hard or nonstop climax.  :cool;

44
Did anyone else find themselves befuddled for a few seconds because they read this as 'Bowser based miiverse' rather than 'Browser'?

Man! An alternate evil Miiverise ruled by Bowser would be awesome!
Ha, awesome!! That was exactly what I was coming in to say!

I wish I could make it out to the St. Louis event. Really wish I could. It's my daughter's birthday, so there just isn't time to make it out to that location. I hope everybody has fun, though!

I love that Sakurai subscribes to the "Why the hell not?" school of game design.
This is the kind of goofy thinking that got us the Daytona car in Fighting Vipers. I love it!

Wow.  This sucks.

Hm.  Something to note - the Missouri one IS still in St. Louis.  Just at the "South County" location.

Same address as originally listed.
I never noticed where they listed addresses. Whoops! I was really hoping for the Maplewood/Richmond Heights one, since it may be the closest one to downtown STL. Man, St. Louis is weird.
Very much looking forward to hearing impressions, still!

TalkBack / Re: GameStop May No Longer Be Selling Wii U Basic Set
« on: June 06, 2013, 10:55:07 AM »
This rumor was already laid to rest. Nintendo will continue to offer the Basic Set in the US. I think they should stick with one SKU at a time this early on, but it is what it is.

Nemo, why would you want them to include an HD? You can shop for your own, and get as large as a 1TB for less than a hundred bucks.

SGnG is incredibly hard, but it isn't cheap. ...

Not sure I can agree on this point.  There are some spots where death is basically unavoidable the first time you get there, just because the design intentionally screws with you.  After you see what's coming you can figure out how to survive, but there are some moments of intentional trolling that can be incredibly hard to see coming when playing through the game.

For example, which G'nG game was it that had the floating platform in stage 1 that would go back and forth across a pit, but every once in a while is stops half-way and changes direction? You can time the jump without much difficulty if you know that's a possible behavior, but I think default timing was to only show the "trick" after you've jumped if running through the stage the first time.  If that's not cheap, I don't know what is.

However, the entire series still manages to be very enjoyable because it's attractive and well-made, and the trolling is blatantly intentional, and (most importantly) you can make steady progress as you learn the tricks and challenges in each level. Don't mistake this criticism to mean that I don't have fun every time I play.
I can agree with you on the trial and error bit. :) I think perhaps my angle is I cut my teeth on 2d platformers, and anticipate really well? They give me less trouble in general than more modern designs.

    Neal, you phrased that perfectly.
