We confess the games we've never played in our Video Game Bucket Lists.

New Business is fairly short this week, but a monstrous featuring segment makes up for it. Greg hasn't played much this week in the absence of Resident Evil, but he does address Nintendo's recent financial news. Jon begins to catch up with one of our favorite games last year, Radiant Historia. Jonny has a pair of platformers with Trine 2 for PC and a conjugal visit with Super Mario Galaxy 2. James surprises us with his short review of a tiny DSiWare game called WarioWare: Snapped!

The show really kicks off in part two as we churn through our extensive Bucket Lists -- games we've always wanted to play and hope to experience before we flee this mortal coil. Despite the grim premise, it's a fun-filled discussion as we march through each generation of video games, naming those titles that eluded us in the past and still call out to our senses of curiosity. It's a nostalgic, surprising set of games, and we had a blast with the discussion. Hope you enjoy it too! Be sure to let us know what's on your list with a quick email to the show.

The song in the end of the podcast is familiar too, but I can't remember what it is from.. I feel like I don't need to mention this but great show as always guys.

Ninja Five-O is called Ninja Cop in Europe, maybe that helps with the cartridge search.


Are you sure that the Zangeki trailer is crazier than Disaster's?


The whole talk about bad minigames is why I like 3D Land better, it doesn't have minigames. It doesn't have stars so it doesn't have to pad up to an arbitrary number.


Also unfortunately Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland isn't about the Tingle you see in the Zelda games but just a random dude who got Tingle'd and tricked into a scam ("earn money and throw it into a pond to get rich" Yeah, sure!). He doesn't come across as creepy, at most maybe evil (look at that laugh when he gets a bargain!).

My bucket list (off the top of my head):
Pre 8 bit: Discs of Tron (Environmental cabinet), E.T. (2600 just to see how bad it is)


8Bit: Ducktales 2, Star Tropics 2


16 Bit: Illusion of Gaia, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (US Name whatever that is in Japan), Secret of Mana, Orge Battle, Any Sonic game (never played one on a Genesis)


32/64: Mario Party 1 and 2, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Mario Tennis, Final Fantasy 7, Prince of Persia


Gamecube era: Pikmin 1 and 2, Dk Jungle Beat, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime, KOTOR


Modern: GTA 4, WWE All Stars, Batman Arkham (both), Super Meat Boy, Scarface (Wii)


Handheld other: All handheld Zelda games, the CDi Zelda games, Final Fantasy Tactics, Radiant Historia.


I actually own a few of these games, I just never have the time to sit down and play them.

Shaymin, I can assure you that Dr J v Larry Bird 1-on-1 (C64) is terrible. It's soooo boring and slow.  It's a pretty legendary game, though...I can understand your curiosity.

Pureval, I haven't played E.T. I haven't heard good things, though.

For the 2600 you gotta play Pitfall and Pitfall 2: Lost Caverns, River Raid, Atlantis, Defender (or probably Stargate), Asteroids (the feel of your ship's controls are spot-on), Ms. Pac-Man, Yar's Revenge, H.E.R.O., and Frostbite.  Probably a few more on that list but those are some of my favorites.

My favorite 2600 games also included Raiders of the Lost Ark, Joust, Berserk, Moon Patrol, Star Raiders and Haunted House.  Also, my dad and I had endless matches in Combat, though I'm pretty sure that he was letting me win.

Eh...I played the DS remake of FF3, and I don't know if I'd recommend it.  It's not bad, not by any means, and it is quite hard, but a bit unfairly so.  "Resurrection" spells and items are rare (and phoenix downs cannot be purchased, only found in treasure chests) and the gameplay/story is pretty bleh.   A few of the characters were cool, but for the most part.....FF4 is so superior in so many ways.

As for Planescape Torment, I actually played it many years ago and I hated myself for it.  The story is not that great....it will make you feel empty inside, much like...say, the Dark Tower series.  Not the same ending, but the same feeling of "Well, that was the point of all this?"   Or the ending of Lost.  The "gameplay" is not great, either.  It's based on the Baldur's gate gameplay model, which is what KOTOR is based on, clicking to fight.

Great episode, guys. I have recently been working through my back catalogue, completing some of the games that I never owned/played as a child. I started building upon my original childhood collection of Nintendo games within the last 2-3 years, and as a result of hoarding, I have a touch of the Lindemann Syndrome. However, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Super Adventure Island, and Faxanadu have all been recent conquests of mine. I also recently beat Ducktales 2 for the NES, a game which my amazing fiance surprised me with as a Christmas gift this past year!

The biggest glaring omission in my gaming history would be the Final Fantasy series, I-VI. I have the means to play them all, but unfortunately I have yet to get around to doing so.

My Brother owned an Atari as I was growing up.  E.T. is awful...just awful.  There are no redeeming qualities to the game and no justifiable reason to play it, even as morbid curiosity.
 
On the plus side, I imagine it'll be incredibly cheap to purchase even if you're still wanting to put yourself through that torture.

I think I own 90% of the bucket games mentioned on this podcast.  And I actually just purchased Solar Jetman a few months ago.  I keep a bucket list of my own and buy a few every year or so.  I have a pretty big list but I'll post a few highlights here. 

NES - Vice: Project Doom
SNES - The Adventures of Batman and Robin
Gameboy - Ninja Gaiden: Shadow
Virtual Boy - Mario Clash
N64 - Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
PSone - R-Type Delta
Dreamcast - Sword of the Berserk
PS2 - Ico
Gamecube - Baten Kaitos: Origins
Wii - Dead Space: Extraction
PS3(which I don't own) - Uncharted series, Valkyria Chronicles

The games I feel most guilty about not playing from that list are the most recent ones.  I loved the Dead Space games and I enjoyed what I played of Extraction when I rented it, but I just haven't gotten around to buying it.  And Baten Kaitos: Origins came out like a month before the Wii so I was saving my money at the time.  But I really liked the first game so it's one I still want to play.

I'm with Lindemann. I've never really played Majora's Mask. Only this last May had I even beaten the first dungeon. It's something I need to do. I'm currently going through Skyward Sword and I'll finish that hopefully in the next couple weeks, but then Mass Effect 3 comes out and that'll take up a month probably. So hopefully in April, I will buckle down and finally give Majora's Mask the proper playthrough it deserves. A May Retroactive for Majora's Mask would be perfect.

I've also never fully completed Metroid Prime 2. I got to the artifact treasure hunt and said, "Yeah, no thanks." and I haven't really been motivated to go back despite loving the game up until that point.

TEMPORARY THREAD DERAILING.

I'm not a big RPG guy either, but Mass Effect 2 streamlines and/or throws out a lot of the RPG elements from the first game. It really isn't all that different from Rockstar's open world games, you just have way more control of the narrative. The world and characters of Mass Effect are the real stars though. That's what makes the series special. You should definitely play it, especially if you still have your save file from the first one.

Here are just a few games random games on my bucket list:
SNES: Lets get the big ones out of the way: Link to the Past and Super Metroid (hides in the corner)! You see, I was going to buy these just the other day on the Wii shop, but then the ambassador GBA games came out, and I felt like Fusion and Minish Cap were enough to scratch those two itches. I have 1600 shop points, so should I bite the bullet and buy them? Also on the SNES: Harvest Moon and Super Mario RPG. (Also, this evening I finally beat Chrono Trigger for the first time. Such a good game!)
N64: Majora's Mask. I have no excuse now that I have the download ticket from Club Nintendo.
GCN: Batten Kaitos, Jungle Beat, and Metroid Prime. I've tried Prime before, but I just couldn't deal with the controls. I'll eventually try it again.
DS: Radient Historia.

Also, I'm a Mega Man virgin. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good game to start at?

I agree that the gameplay, and especially the combat, leave a lot to be desired, but I personally loved the characters and world. Learning more about each of them was a treat. Plus, I thought it was nice to play a long WRPG where you only have to fight, what, three times to beat the game? And the final boss doesn't have to be one of them. Besides, how many large-scope RPGs can you name where the purpose is never to save the world or whatnot, but rather to figure out who you are, and if you can ever change that?

I'm happy to recommend the game to anyone as a change of pace. But I admit that it's definitely not for everyone.

Just realized I forgot one thing from my bucket list: A 100% completion+000 run of Link to the Past.

I've done it with Ocarina and Link's Awakening, but never LttP because its save system is busted.

Wouldn't that be a lot easier with Virtual Console... or do you mean actually completing a marathon playthrough?
