Title: The N64 - What did you think?
Post by: NintendoKiD on June 28, 2003, 09:59:56 PM
I want everyones honest opinion about the N64. I keep checking GameStop to see if they get one in because I am dying to buy one (especially a red or smoke colored, I dont want the regular black). What games did you guys love? I'm definetly getting Goldeneye and No Mercy.

The N64 was great, if you buy one you should get:

Mario 64
Starcraft 64
Mario Kart
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (I never played it, but I hear it's good)
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (Stay away from the others)
Resident Evil 2
Starfox 64
Pokemon Stadium 1 and/or 2
Paper Mario

There are other great games too but I'm too sleep deprieved to come up with any.  Hope this helped, good times...

dont get RE 2, get it on gamecu... oh wait, nm

i loved my n64, SSB got 100's of hours of gameplay, 100's upon 100's!

there are alot of class titles, but mostly from nintendo's own stable, as 3rd party support was minimal at best. check out peoples 'my games' list, if they have a n64 you will most likely see most of the quality games there.

wish my n64 hadn't died.

Did you bury it in the backyard PIAC? I would! Poor thing, died at 64....

I loved my Nintendo 64. Ever since I powered it on with Sub Zero. Yes, they shop guy basically gave MK: Sub Zero to me when I purchased the system

Games I loved... Hmmm...
Blast Corps, 1080, PW 64, Goemon 2, Mario 64, GOLDENEYE (It deserves to have bold formatting ), Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark, San Francisco Rush (Oh God, I loved that game to death. Seriously. It died on me well into its second year), Rush 2, Smash Bros and so on.

DISCOVER THE MAGIC! GO. NOW!

I loved N64. I just hate the controller now. It's soooooo crap! Anyone agree?
I have:

Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
F-Zero X
Battle for Naboo

I wanna get (I still wanna buy games for it!):
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Diddy Kong Racing

I miss Rare on the N64.
But now? Their games don't seem nearly HALF as good as the bunch i mentioned above.

not only do the controlers feel horrible now, but they're all worn out.  if i look where the control stick is, i see all this powdery, grey, pixie stick like stuff.  and when i tilt the controller, the stick moves with it.  it make all my games unplayable.

I love my N64.  I still have it hooked up, and I play it occassionally.  Star Fox, Mischief Makers, and Kirby are my current favorites.

I actually don't mind the controller.  The Gamecube one is a lot better, and the N64 buttons could be more sensitive, but it's not actually that bad, I think.  Not any worse than the Xbox controller

I just want the ultimate multiplayer console. I know the 64 has tons of multi player games, but I want ones that are just tons of fun to play with 3-4 people. I was thinking a Dreamcast maybe because of House of the Dead and the Light Guns. I might stick with N64 though so atleast I can play a 3-D Zelda game.

I really liked the N64 controller until I got a cube, now I'm so spoiled I can't stand the old N64 ones anymore.
Games I liked

Mario Kart
Mario Tennis
Zelda OOT
Zelda MM
Super Mario 64

I like the N64 controller.  My sticks are all incredibly loose, and it took me a while to get used to the GameCube controller because of that.    I am used to making extreme movements with little force.

My biggest problem with the N64 was waiting a year or more for the next great game to come out.  However, since the console is now in the land of the dead, all of its greats are up for grabs now.  I would very much advise getting one, and many of the games listed in this thread.  The N64 is a solid console, with some truly great games for it.  There are not many, but the ones that are there are truly worth the price.

N64 was a really good system while it lasted. I still have a few of the N64 games, you should get:

- Mario Golf
- Mario Tennis
- Super Mario 64
- Goldeneye (Superb, a Cassic)
- Perfect Dark
- Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time (Classic)
- Banjo Kazooie and Tooie (I own 'em both)
- Super Smash Bros

And thats about it..

Multi-player?

Perfect Dark, WWF Warzone, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, The New Tetris, Buck Bumble, Monster Truck Madness, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Quake II, Forsaken, Rampage, Mario Tennis and even Pokemon Stadium all kept me and my friends up for many sleepness nights.

Yes, even The New Tetris. That was wicked in 4-Player.

Buck Bumble was cool.  I rented it once.

Super Smash Brothers is practically void due to SSBM, but it's still okay.  I really liked Hyrule Castle and Saffron City, though.

The N64 Controller sucks now, what ever way I use it.
Perhaps I should get new ones, but then that's wasting my money from buying Gamecube stuff.
The GCN's control stick is so smooth and soft, I can't imagine playing with any other controller.

I always hated the N64's controller ;_____;
Only ever found peace with it in first person shooters and Mario 64. Fighting games were almost impossible to play due to the gibbon like grip you had to use to reach the D-Pad and the C-Buttons.

I like my cheap and nasty 3rd party controller. Its D-Pad is heaps bigger, as with the C-Buttons. The Z-button clicks in better, and the joystick is still as stiff as ever (That just sounds wrong)

And yeah, after using the GCN's stick, the N64's just seems like crap.

ultimate multi player console, well you would need both n64 gamecube and dreamcast in my opinion, all have high quality multi player titles, dreamcast has AAAAAAAAAWSOME fighting games, namely soul calibur, guilty gear x, marvel vs capcom 2 just to name a few, n64 obviously cant go past golden eye as pretty much everyone has mentioned, perfect dark also as an expansion on proven gameplay, mario kart, ssb (old school fun! specially if you dislike cube), fzero x and gauntlet legends are all top choices in my books, they never get old given you dont have 1 dominant player

Oooooooh! How could I forget Gauntlet Legends?! That was funtastic in 4-player! TO THE MAX!

The N64 is kind of an odd system.  When it was current it was a huge pain in the ass to own because often the AAA games came out months apart and there was literally nothing to play between.  However now that all is said and done the N64 has an amazing lineup which has aged really well.  The Gamecube may have more third party titles and a more consistent release of titles but there are still no Cube titles that in my opinion are anywhere near the quality of Nintendo's first party N64 titles.  Super Mario 64 is better than Super Mario Sunshine, the N64 Zelda titles are two of the best games EVER, today's first person shooters can't touch Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and back then Rare DIDN'T suck (at least until DK64).  Plus because the Playstation and N64 were so different, back then N64 third party games were actually made specifically for the N64 instead of now where 90% of the Cube's third party games are designed for the PS2 and then ported over (often in a half-assed fashion).

I agree that the controller is pretty bad now compared to the Gamecube controller.  I find I still like the design, I just hate the analog stick.

OMG!! I forgot about f-zero x!  I was looking foward to f-zero gx, but there are a few more games i'd like to buy before that what about f-zero x? is it good? fun? fast?  f-zero gx looks sick, is x just as good (aside from the graphics and sound)?
Title: The N64 - What did you think?
Post by: Ian Sane on June 30, 2003, 08:13:38 AM
F-Zero X is amazing.  The graphics are pretty basic but the gameplay more than makes up for it.  It's just insane speed and a real treat with four players.  However I don't know if it's really worthwhile to get now that F-Zero GX is almost here.  GX looks to be basically F-Zero X with better graphics and more stuff.  Once GX comes out X will likely become obsolete like how Super Smash Bros Melee made the original Super Smash Bros obsolete.

If you can find it really cheap and you really can't wait for F-Zero GX then buy it but I imagine once GX comes out you'll never touch the N64 version again.

The N64 was a good, solid piece of hardware in its day.  It set the four-control-port standard now used by everybody except for the idiots at Sony.  It had a wonderfully ergonomic (spelling?) controller design that popularized the analogue control (later "borrowed" by Sony with the Dual Shock PSX controller that surely they gave themselves credit for) and, thanks the the Rumble Pack, made force feedback standard today, though Sony mocked it at first (again, probably crediting themselves for it later).  N64 had way better graphics than PSX did, no load time at all, and did not require memory cards, though strangely enough some developers chose to require it for their games, anyways.  The only thing the sack of crap PSX had on it was the huge capacity and low cost of CD's.  Technically, one could have made a cartrige with the same capacity, but it would have cost a fortune.  Even a 64 megabyte cart cost way more than a CD that boasted a capacity of half a gigabyte.  At the time of the console's introduction, though, how could people have forseen that people would soon be pumping games full of FMVs and stuff that required so much space?  Such a thing was unheard of before that.

Crap.  Double post.  Is it just me or does this server suck or something?  Nowhere else do I have to refresh every page I go to just to see it and continuously have to repost, not knowing whether or not it posted the first try.

Actually, Shadow Gate 64 had to load. No joke. Took a good 15 seconds. How's THAT for quality programming? And not only did some games require a memory card on the N64, but alot took well over half of it to save one game. That REALLY pissed me off. Turok took a good chunk out. FIFA took an entire freakin' card, Warzone took half. Bleh.

I never understood the whole memory card thing with the N64, the only thing I can think of is that Nintendo wanted to complete with Sony with the memory card thing.

I think originally, it was so 3rd party developers could 'lower' the cost of production because they didn't have to worry about an internal battery. That saving didn't pass onto the consumer though >_>

Wipeout had load times.
My friend had it for his N64, and when it was laoding, i was like "what the heck is this? Is this a load time? What's a load time?"

and the game wasn't that great.

F-Zero x is bloody awesome.
But yeah, I don't see the point of buying now since F-Zero GX is coming.  Unless Nintendo put it in as a pre-order bonus! F-Zero an F-Zero 2 from SNES, and F-Zero X!

I have had much quality time playing Mario Golf.  I've always had a thing for golfing games, but alot of them just sucked.  Finnaly, a quality golfing title with MARIO!!!

I just played Mario Golf  GC yesterday on a walmart demo yesterday, and i was disappointed.  Probably becasue I didn't read the control screen, but I had figured it out for the most part.  The swing meter was different than in the 64 version.  It goes up to (wherever on the meter you want) and then it doesn't come back down.  Instead, a seperate bar on the right starts moving, and i'm not sure wheather I had to press A to stop it becasue it said "automatic".  I'm guessing I didn't, but I did anyway.

But if course, it was probably from lack of practice.  There were good things too, like it said how far on the power meter to stop it, which made putting easier.

Sorry for my rambling about something off topic, so.... err....Mario Golf was good.

What is this about a F-Zero 2?  I don't remember an F-Zero 2 in the SNES, or anywhere else either.  All I can account for is, SNES, N64, GBA and now GCN.
