PAX East Panel -- RFN: A Live Nintendo Podcast for Grown-Ups
« on: January 20, 2010, 06:12:48 PM »
Message from Penny Arcade Expo:

"Congratulations, your PAX East panel submission of "Radio FreeNintendo: A Live Nintendo Podcast for Grown-Ups" has been accepted.  We tentatively have you scheduled for Friday, March 26th from 2:30pm – 3:30pm in our Wyvern Theatre."

Here is the tentative description that I provided:

Quote
Radio Free Nintendo has delivered weekly discussion on all things Nintendo since mid-2006, in a convenient podcast format. This outspoken and funny group of Nintendo experts comes from the oldest and largest independent Nintendo website in the world, Nintendo World Report. We love Nintendo games, except when we don't, and we appreciate/criticize Wii and DS games in the context of multi-platform gaming. We know the best Metroid upgrades, the worst Zelda dungeons, and what makes Sin & Punishment sublime. We own more WiiWare games than you knew existed. And we're not afraid to compare Mario with Ratchet & Clank or Prince of Persia. Panelists include: Jonathan Metts, Greg Leahy, James Jones, Jonathan Lindemann, and Karl Castaneda (all of Nintendo World Report), plus special guests.

Before you make any travel plans, please note that we are awaiting confirmation from the entire RFN crew and others, like Karl, who may be participating. I haven't scheduled any special guests yet, either. And we have a lot of work to do to make sure that the panel can be recorded in an acceptable audio format to become a podcast later.

With all those caveats... we are really excited. ;-) Early word was that we probably wouldn't be accepted, so this is a very nice surprise. I hope that all our listeners planning to attend PAX East will be at our panel; we'd love to meet you in person and get your direct, live participation. I thought this thread could be a place to make plans, take suggestions on format and content, bask in the joy, etc.

Dammit, now I have to rearrange my whole budget to see if I can find room for train tickets and hotel rooms. I wanted to go to this anyway, and the possibility of trolling Jon Lindemann in person is too good to pass up.

I completely missed the 'East' part and thought this was going to be in Washington again and was totally ready to attend...I doubt I could afford the tickets and time off of work.

I am excited that it is happening, though.

Very, very cool.

Apologies for the stupid question, but how do these panels work at PAX? Is it basically a podcast that the attendees can watch as it happens? I remember reading GameSpot's blow-by-blow accounts of some of the panels at PAX 2009, but I didn't really get what they were all about.

Panels can be about nearly anything. We proposed this one as a live version of our podcast -- essentially, the same idea that 1up Yours pioneered some years ago. The main hook is that we are Nintendo-focused, probably the only panel at PAX to be so. I hope we have a number of RFN listeners in attendance, but the majority of the audience will be new to the show and will probably have come because of what they saw in the event program.

Nice! Congrats.
Coincidentally, I just finished listening to the E3 2009 Day 3 podcast wherein Johnny talked about making a point of seeing the live 1UP podcast recorded there. I think I'll track that down for a listen as a sort of "free preview" of what may come out of PAX East from RFN.

I really like the panel description blurb. I'd go see that panel! I especially love the mention of "more WiiWare games than you knew existed." I suggest a hefty segment of the panel be focussed on VC and WiiWare. Some "hidden gem" discussions would be cool and I think the PAX East crowd may be appreciative of something like that. Just my $0.02.

I will be there, but I'll be nothing but a gleeful observer of this I imagine. Four or five guest appearances don't really tie me to history of the podcast.

However, Live Newscast Podcast for PAX West? Hell yea! And by hell yea, I mean "Hell yea there will most likely never be any consideration for that outside of what I just said."

Is TYP going?  I have to wonder if a Live Radio Trivia panel would generate any interest in a setting like PAX.

On RFN #180 Jonny mentioned that he wants to do a live listener mail section with the audience.  If this takes place please do everyone a favor and repeat the question before you begin to answer it otherwise the folks listening at home won't have a clue what question you're addressing.  Thanks.

Status: Current lineup for RFN Live is Jon, James, Karl, and myself. Greg can't commit right now, but there is still a small chance he will be able to come. I have asked PAX East to reserve an extra chair for special guests, and Greg would clearly be first among those if he ends up attending.

I've been thinking, you guys had better have at least mostly Nintendo-related stuff for New Business at this thing. Unless it's basically empty there are going to be a lot of people there who aren't familiar with the podcast and would be upset if it weren't about Nintendo.

I'm not saying it has to be only Nintendo, but it should be at least half Nintendo, and everyone there should have something Nintendo to talk about. Though, I like the idea of whoever it was that Lindy play Cho Aniki that week so he has an excuse to talk about it.

Update: Karl was out, but now he's back in for sure. Jon is now confirmed (flights purchased). Obi will be there and will be on the panel, too. James was already confirmed.

Question: Is anyone interested in an after-hours meet-up somewhere in Boston? Food, drinks, gaming talk, mixing it up between RFN folks and listeners? Only thing is I would prefer not to be responsible for organizing this (since we're going to be busy with the panel and covering the expo). If anyone is well acquainted with the area, please suggest good locations.

The one I've been looking at, which is one of the cheapest I've seen in my looking around, runs about $680 for three nights. That's a final price, including all taxes and fees, though it might change a bit if we were to be putting two people in it instead of one.

EDIT: I looked at the site linked to by the PAX East site, I found one for $30 less, and that's for two people.

Okay, so I finally booked my hotel. The Hilton got booked (not a big surprise), so I had to go with the Colonnade Boston.

Also, I looked around for Bar & Grills in the area - seems like the Cactus Club is really close to the convention center. That might be worth checking out.

I'm still angry PAX East wasn't in Florida.  It only makes sense:  PAX is in the continental North-West.  PAX East should be Continental South-East.  In Florida.  Something like Orlando.  They've got giant convention centers dotting all around Orlando.

Not going.  Stupid PAX.

I was also considering volunteering. I've worked concert security and stage crew before so they might let me in that way.

A friend of mine is volunteering, mainly because he has ties to the guy who is in charge of all the volunteers. If you need any help (references, etc.), let me know.

Does anyone have good suggestions for airlines?

I got a fantastic deal at Southwest, but their prices jump quickly after the first set of tickets are sold. Still worth checking. I also recommend a site called Student Universe, which occasionally finds tickets much cheaper than other sites. You don't have to be a student to use it (that used to be the case, though). Lindy got a very good deal there after I recommended it to him.

As for Greg, it looks quite unlikely, but he's not ruling it out yet. He won't be an official panelist, but if he swings a travel deal at the last minute, we'll definitely get him up there.

If Greg can somehow make it, this event will go from legendary to EPIC.

Tay, yes, MrDiamondJ will be in the building.

I have no hotel plans at the moment, but Jonny, I make take you and Obi up on that offer of crashing on your floor.  It would save us all some cash, and I'm doing this trip straight hobo styles.

In case you haven't seen it, the PAX schedule is now online:

http://www.paxsite.com/paxeast/schedule.php

We are awkwardly sandwiched between Kohler's panel and the Wil Wheaton keynote, which bodes poorly for attendance to RFN Live. It also means, unfortunately, that Chris will probably not be a special guest at our panel (and he was looking forward to it).

Any updates on the social event? Is Lauren still working on that?

NWR Social Night!

I'm looking into bars (I assume we're all of age) around the Convention Center, because regardless of where y'all are staying you're going to be around there.  I'm scoping it out on Yelp because I'm all about reviews.  Yelp also has a super feature on it that allows you to find bars that are good for groups and allows you to narrow down your price range.  I checked off $ and $$, and here's what I found:

The Pour House - bar/pub.  This is my number 1 choice for 2 reasons.  The first is that I love it's name, and the second is that it is literally across the street.  The also serve food, but do not take reservations, so I assume this place is going to be out of control at the end of the convention, which is why I even bothered to continue looking.  But I read a review that says Thursday nights are half-off Mexican food so I am totally in.  Oh, and I'll post a quote from another review: "cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap! and the beers are huge! and the nachos are huge!"  I really don't think anyone could possibly contest.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-pour-house-boston

King's Bowling - bowling/dinner/bar/pool/VIDEO GAMES.  I originally clicked on this because my revelation with The Pour House made me realize I should check off "Accepts Reservations" as well.  So I weeded through a bunch to find King's, which caught my attention because it has video games. Uhhh hello!  But it's a bowling alley that is notorious for having 2 hour long waits on weekends.  So if this is it, I'm going to try to make reservations by like, Thursday afternoon, so I'm going to need a head count if we're doing bowling.  It is also INSANELY close to the Convention Center so it may even be reserved out by now.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/kings-boston

Pazzo Ristorante - Italian/full bar/restaurant.  I wanted to have a more sit-down-restaurant place on here, too.  This is Italian and got some rave reviews; it also has a full bar (the important thing).  And it's super close to the convention center AND has only $$ so if we want to opt for a sit-down dinner, this would be it, IMO.  Again, this place takes res's so I'll call as soon as we have a good head count once we all decide.  If y'all are digging a restaurant vibe and are willing to shell out some more money we can do sushi/Asian or tapas.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/pazzo-ristorante-and-bar-boston

(FYI: $$ means $11-$30 but there's like nothing in Back Bay for under $10.)

Also, I don't know where everyone's staying but we're going to be at Hilton Boston Back Bay, which is right next to the convention center.

Note: I have never been to Boston in my life, let alone Back Bay.  If someone has and knows some good places, please suggest some!  These are just ones I found after an hour or so on Yelp.

My preference is for a sit-down restaurant where we can make a reservation and actually have a conversation without screaming over bar music. We can always move to a bar afterward if people want to get shitty.

I can plan this whole thing so much better over e-mail because if someone gets left out it's their own fault, not just like "well I didn't check the forum on it" or something.  So! If I can get a round-up of everyone's e-mails then I can start sending out the info that way and we can have a conversation on that, and then post the final plans on here for everyone/anyone else to see so they can spontaneously join us!  Thanks! (:

I'd love to go to PAX West, but the timeframe is all wrong. It was a miracle getting time off from work to go to Boston - the last two weeks of the month are basically a no-go with my firm. So unless I pull something awesome out of the sky, I doubt I'll be heading to Seattle.

I can always hope, though.

I'm very excited for this thing. Can't wait to be back on the podcast and to tare up Boston with the NWR crew. Also I'll bring my Flip Mino HD so we can shoot some video for the hotel "drunkcast".

It's kind of ridiculous that we're all going to be up on a stage in front of (possibly, kind of!) a bunch of people in less than four days. Although I'm honestly looking forward to the drunkcast just as much as the live show.

Just so you guys know, I'm totally peacing out after like 20 minutes to go to the keynote.

All kidding aside, I'm excited that NWR will be there in full force...and that we'll be able to hang out a lot.

Was a location picked for the meet-up? Karl mentioned Pazzo to me but is that the final decision? I just want to know so I can put it all in my calendar.

So as per Jonny's request in the last episode of RFN for me to make a video of me playing Racquet Sports with the god awful "Ubisoft
Motion Tracking Camera," I'm bringing the game to Boston with me so everyone can look like a douche waving their arms around.

Also, I'm bringing my Wii in general so we can play Smash and such. Anyone who would want to use a GameCube controller (or in James' case, the Nyko Wand), bring it along. I think I only have one, maybe two Cube controllers at school right now.

Hey, just dropping an update for anyone not following the various panel members on Twitter. The show went very well, especially the Q&A half with lots of great questions from our small but attentive audience. It all went down smoothly and was over before we knew it. We did triple recordings and video of the whole thing -- not sure how long it'll take to post any of it, but we're hoping to make it quick.

That wasn't the end of it, though. There's also a hotel tired-cast where we talk about the rest of our day at PAX, as well as --wait for it!-- audio of me teaching Jon, Karl, and Obi how to play Magic the Gathering. No joke. More to come!

The Hotel Tiredcast is edited and ready to go - I think it just needs to be uploaded. So that should be out before the end of the day. I've also got the This Magic Moment (in which Lindy, Sklens, Jonny and I play MTG) on my hard drive to be edited. Oh, and the RIDICULOUS Hotel Drunkcast, which I haven't gone back to listen to at all. It should be a trip, though.

I tried to make the best out of missing the PAX East activities with my weekend off. Predictably I took care of a bunch of non-gaming obligations that I've been neglecting for far too long, but I still had some extra time to play some stuff I wouldn't have done otherwise--such as going back to unlock the last secret levels in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which was a lot of fun. Best of all though, I had the chance to record an episode of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition with TYP for the first time in more than a year. Look out for Episode 70 sometime soon--hopefully everyone enjoys listening to it at least a fraction as much as I enjoyed recording it.
