I kind of wonder if ToCS 3 is a canary in the coal mine for Monster Hunter World. Both had sizable portable fanbases drop dramatically in the move to console only.

I'm not normally bitter and vindictive with these things, but I kinda hope it is. Mostly because I'm still a little butt hurt that they either cancelled or postponed a localization for XX because of this game.

So apparently there's word going around today that Switch's only sold 2 million units in NA since launch. If that's accurate, Mario will probably double that over the holidays, but...yeah, that's still not an amazing 1st year, even if it is much better than the Wii U.

The Wii's first six NPDs (which admittedly had about two weeks less than the Switch, but had the holidays) were 2.47 million.

The Wii's first six NPDs (which admittedly had about two weeks less than the Switch, but had the holidays) were 2.47 million.

Well, if you want to draw comparisons, the PS4 sold a million units in a day when it launched, and it's currently at over 60 million after 4 years.

The Wii's 1st 6 month sales were pure supply constraints, constraints that seem more severe than what's currently going on with Switch.

As it stands, it looks like the Switch may be veering closer to the Xbone's sales, which are about half the PS4's sales.

Between 21 and 49 million? I'm thinking between 30 something and 60 something million lifetime (including revisions) That would put it between the N64 and the NES.

I think the true test for the Switch will probably be how the Bethesda titles sell on it. If they sell well enough that other third parties feel it is worth putting their games on the system or Bethesda is happy and keeps supporting the system then that could go a long way in boosting Switch's sales as public perception for the console gives people confidence it will have a lot more of the games they like besides just Nintendo titles. If those sales are deemed too low or Bethesda announces they don't plan to release any future titles on the Switch then that could lead to a lot of cooling off of the public's interest in the Switch.

It's doing good so far with a good launch and word of mouth with Zelda, Nintendo has kept their word and has released a lot of titles for it over these past few months and now they have another big one Mario Odyssey to give it another high profile boost over the holidays. If the Switch can pass the Bethesda test as well then I think it should be able to get to N64 levels or higher.

If the Switch does stumble with sales for the Bethesda games, it still has one more way to keep things on track and hopefully make the system still look viable to third parties and that is the mainline Pokémon game coming for it. There's a good chance that is next year's big holiday Switch title. The Pokémon company has been talking about Ultra Sun and Moon recently and that it is the last game they are releasing on the 3DS. It's clear their focus is elsewhere since they are basically just reusing a lot of assets from last year's Sun and Moon in order to get a title out this year. This probably would have been the time for a Diamond and Pearl remake but that would require a lot more development time. Ultra Sun and Moon speeds up the development giving them two years that they can mostly be working on a Switch title. It will be interesting to see how the Pokémon game could affect Switch sales as well.

Switch will end up between Gamecube and N64 LTS, in all likelihood?

Between 21 and 49 million? I'm thinking between 30 something and 60 something million lifetime (including revisions) That would put it between the N64 and the NES.

2017-18 ~ 6 9 mil (shortages)

2018-19 ~ 9 mil

2020-21 ~ 10 mil (Spl3toon; Animal Crossing: Mobster Town; Let's Dance: Malon Rouge; BotW HD HD remake; F-Zero Maker; and first fully 3D Pokemon: Uranus/Black Hole spur sales to Wii-esque levels)

2021-22 ~ 5 mil (Next-gen consoles announced; Dorky, overpriced VR headsets suck up all the gaming oxygen)

2023-24 ~ 0 sales (Elon Musk sends everyone to Mars)

=======

total: 33 mil

The Wii's 1st 6 month sales were pure supply constraints, constraints that seem more severe than what's currently going on with Switch.

This is 100% false bullshit.  The Wii was averaging around 300-400k while selling out in North America most months on NPD it's first year, while the Switch has been selling around 200k each month sold out.  The only reason the Switch and Wii are as close is because Nintendo shipped a lot more Switch at launch then Wii had at its launch, but many of that launch supply for Switch at launch was at the cost of the stock they originally had planned for the coming months.  The average monthly supply of Switch units has been half of what they were able to supply with the Wii.

Plus if we're already going to start talking about potential lifetime sales, then why is the Wii the only system to compare it to when we also have the more recent 3DS that is a better comparison for the current gaming climate.  The Switch is selling at a faster rate then the 3DS was it's first year and has a much stronger lineup, especially in the West, and this is without a huge price cut that the 3DS needed to save it's ass.  That same 3DS is currently at 67 million units worldwide.

Seriously, there's no debate people, the Switch will easily pass the 70 million mark during it's lifetime.  If the 3DS could get through a **** launch that required a huge price cut, and some pretty large droughts throughout its lifespan and still be on track to hitting 70 million the Switch will easily surpass it.  Hell, with all the hype and momentum the Switch has going into the holiday, the fact the Switch will be the only system Nintendo supports come the end of 2018 and much better third party support especially from the West I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch easily surpassed the 100 million mark by the end of it's life.

And before some people laugh and act like that can never happen, I always love how these same people acting like a Nintendo system hitting the 100 million mark is some impossible task that the Wii only did because of its cultural phenomenon status, and then forget the DS which was out during that same time and never had anywhere close to the same kind of media coverage managed to sell over 150 million units, well over 50 million more then the Wii.  Considering the Switch is a hybrid which also makes it a handheld as well, the Wii isn't the only system that it can be compared and when compared to the DS first year, the Switch is well above which it was doing at this time as well.

The only caveat I have about comparing the Switch to the DS, 3DS is that they have had revisions and different versions released. Moreover, it's not unusual for a person to own a couple of them. I've got 2 DS systems and 2 3DS systems and I'm contemplating buying a third 3DS (though I'd probably ditch one of them if I did that.) Whereas I've only owned one console when it gets released. One Wii. One Wii U. I'd be very surprised to find myself buying a second system. Although some people have talked about having multiple ones in their homes so that they and their significant other can have one, I'm not sure how viable that will be for a lot of people. A family with three kids might be able to scrounge up enough or buy used two or three 3DS systems for their kids but they probably aren't going to buy three Switches. I'm not sure how this hybrid system will affect sales since it is the priciest handheld Nintendo has released.

I was watching a video Jeremy Parish made about the SNES Classic and he pointed out that the only Nintendo systems since the N64 that he was able to just walk into a store around launch and buy one were the Gamecube, Wii U and 3DS.  The 3DS recovered but the other two never did (and imagine if Nintendo hadn't been able to save the 3DS?  What trouble would Nintendo have been in if both platforms were flops?)

You couldn't find a Switch in stores for six months.  That's a good sign.  Nintendo doesn't have a track record of flops that were hot items at launch.  Look at the Wii U in the same time frame - if you wanted one you would just go buy one and third parties were already bailing out.  The Switch is kicking ass in comparison.  And the Switch hasn't even had a Christmas season yet.  That will be the big indicator.

I also am very impressed by the sellouts because this is coming after the Wii U which was a frightening bomb for Nintendo.  It looked like Nintendo was in big trouble and their rep was severely damaged.  But the Switch was selling out.  I was afraid no one was going to buy it!  This is a big bounce back for Nintendo.  At the very least their reputation was vastly improved in really less than a year.

This gen I see the PS4 as the console of choice, the XB1 as an irrelevant dud, and the Switch as the 3DS replacement.  Yes, it costs more than handhelds used to but handhelds have changed their target audience.  Casual videogame play on the go is handled by phones and tablets - dedicated handheld videogame systems are for hardcore gamers that need something gaming-specific.  That audience will pay more for a specialized device.  The kid market will also gravitate towards the Switch because of Pokemon.

And yeah, as someone said, Pokemon is the ultimate ace in the hole.  That's what ultimately would have saved the Gamecube and Wii U.  For whatever reason, and I don't know if it's Gamefreak or the Pokemon Company or what, but proper Pokemon games are handheld-only.  It's Nintendo's ultimate killer app that would sell any system but they kept it handheld-exclusive.  Well now the console Pokemon is happening because the Switch is going to be the only platform they have.
