I wouldn't think of him as the Gen VI Pokemon, but he looks like a fun addition.

He looks great! Too bad for Ridley though. Boss confirmed...

My only hope is that what was clearly the Other M clone Ridley is the boss while a playable original Ridley is an actual character. Like Toon Link on the Spirit Tracks stage.

You fought the good fight, good sir. I've enjoyed your Miiverse art. Ten cool points for effort.

I'm bummed Dark Samus was relegated to an Assist Trophy. No extra love for Metroid. At least we have Busty Samus with rocket shoes.

A part of me is not entirely convinced about Ridley though so I still have some hope. Things like Toon Link being in the stages back ground and then becoming playable come to mind. Other M clone Ridley was the one flying and playable classic Ridley could be in store. It would be something like Bowser and Giga Bowser in Melee.

The only possible speed bump in that theory is that Toon Link doesn't seem like he actually does anything in the Spirit Tracks stage except be a background piece. Ridley is supposedly a stage hazard. Would they remove Ridley as a stage hazard when Ridley is selected? The clone idea is a bit of a stretch. I suppose if Sakurai doesn't mind cheating, he could have Meta-Ridley swoop into the Other M stage, but if he was going to do that, why not just include regular Ridley and ignore the fact that Stage Hazard Ridley and playae Ridley coexist?

Of course, all that talk of stage hazards while showing the Ridley shadow could be a red herring and he isn't a stage hazard at all. The shadow could be playable Ridley's. He was a boss in Brawl and since Little Mac went from Assist Trophy to playable character, I'm not willing to rule anything out.

Random Thoughts!

I kind of liked the idea of Pokémon trainer precisely because it condensed the number of roster spots being taken up by Pokémon. I mean, I finished Pokémon Y and I don't even know who Greninja is.

On that note, I do feel like certain series' have been over-represented while others have not received enough attention. I mean, do we really need Link and Toon link? Zelda and Sheik? Samus and Zero-suit Samus? It's great that those characters actually feel unique from each other, but I'd much prefer that they put that effort into filling out the roster with secondary and tertiary characters from each series, rather than creating different versions of the same character.

How about Goombas? They're pretty iconic (It writes itself. Up smash = Spike Helmet. Down Smash = Kuribo's Shoe. Air Dash = Winged Goomba).

Also, Mii's have got to in there right?

Also, also, Ridley isn't too big.

Also, also, also, where's Batman?

The thing is there isn't that many secondary characters in Zelda and Metroid that appear in more then one game.  The only characters from Zelda that fit this would be Tingle and Impa, and well, Tingle's lack of popularity in the West makes his chances kind of hard and Impa could still get in as an alternate custom for Sheik.  For Metroid, the only characters that fill the role are Ridley and Dark Samus.  Ridley still could have a chance since Sakurai sure loves to troll fans but Dark Samus has already been made an Assist Trophy.

Sakurai bases his decisions on the characters importance to their series, modern relevance and popularity.  Outside of Impa for Zelda and Ridley for Metroid, nobody really fits those requirements in each series beyond their main characters.  And like I said above, Impa and Ridley could still make it as playable characters in some way so I wouldn't count them out yet.

Impa is, unfortunately, an Assist Tropy as well. I'm more disappointed in Dark Samus not being playable than Impa as the Zelda series is well-represented and Metroid really isn't. Outside of Ridley and Dark Samus, the choices are slim unless you want the Hunters, or Rundus (ew). It would be kind of weird for every character from Metroid to be named Samus.

You know, I actually have a little more hope about Ridley after thinking it over some more.

Why is it that Sakurai won't say his name or show him? Pic of the day referred to him as "the trauma of Samus" and in english "an enemy from Samus's past."

Then 8 months later he mentions other boss characters could appear and proceeds to show Ridley's shadow and tail spike. Speaking of the spike it is the ugly Other M clone Ridley for sure, that spike only existed then and the wing "fingers" extend far beyond the thin membrane of his wings, again only designed like that for Other M Ridley.

I mean why not just show him and explain him if being a boss stage hazard is all he'll be? Why is he purposely being so darn cryptic? Ridley may not be playable but there seems to be something more to it as well.

Did anyone notice the weird animation the shadow took on as well? It moved and stopped in sudden jerky motions found in actual playable characters. If you look at any boss from Brawl or Melee, they have nice fluid animations, especially Ridley's boss battles. This Ridley looked like it was being pushed along by an analog stick, made to stop, and then pushed along again.

My theories are as follows:

1-There will be a special boss battle mode where one player can control the boss while everyone else gangs up on him.

2-That ultra ugly Ridley is indeed playable and boss, or the UGLY one is a boss and classic cool Brawl Ridley is playable. Bowser/GigaBowser in Melee, DK and Classic DK in 75 meters(yes Cranky Kong), ROB as a hired goon throughout SUBSPACE, and Toon Link on the Spirit Tracks stage but replaced with Alfonso when you pick Toon Link yourself. So there is a little precedence with this theory.

Sakurai has been toying with fan expectations to a much higher degree than ever before. The way he introduces things during pic of the days, how he positions characters, etc. He is troller and you can tell he enjoys it. In this direct alone he trolled us like 3 times, the best and most outright example saying Zero Suit Samus won't be a part of Smash 4's cast.

I don't know what it is but SOMETHING BIG is up with Ridley. Please tell me I'm not crazy. Please?

That would be cool to see one of the Hunters. I'd love to see Ridley. I see him being built like Bowser was in Melee and Brawl, hunched over.

Impa hasn't been shown to be an Assist Trophy.  The only Zelda Assist Trophies shown so far are Skull Kid and Midna.  Impa could still have a chance if Sheik is given an alternate customs since Impa would be the perfect fit for that.  Similar to how Lucina would be a perfect alternate custom for Marth.

I forgot how weird Ridley looked in Other M.  As for your theory, I suppose anything is possible, but Sakurai said in the E3 Developer Direct that Samus was made to look closer to her design in Other M. If Ridley shows up in any capacity, I feel like he would resemble his Other M iteration as well. Of course, they could opt for Meta Ridley (I didn't even think of this when I brought up Meta Ridley before). He loses his wings before the second phase of the boss fight in Metroid Prime so that could be worked into his character. Omega Ridley would be an appropriate Final Smash.

I still think Dark Samus is a missed opportunity. It would have been nice to get both Dark Samus and Meta Ridley.
