Title: Pokemon R/S/?
Post by: Jamie on March 14, 2003, 08:28:44 AM
When R/B came out, Yellow followed after some time.  When G/S came out, Crystal followed after some time.  Do you think we can expect a 3rd Pokemon game in the Ruby/Sapphire series?

I'm not really that into Pokemon (used to own Blue), but I remember it being fun and pretty addicting, and I never tried to be really good in it.  I figure if a 3rd Pokemon game comes out, I'll just wait.  Also, will the game be a lot different from RBY?  I hope I won't be lost in it, as I never owned GSC.

I've only managed to play a little of Sapphire so far, but I'm loving it so far.  It's pure Pokemon, plus a lot of neat enhancements that are making it new enough where I don't feel it's too similar to the older games.

As for a third game, it's entirely possible ... the obvious jump would be Pokemon Diamond.  Maybe Pokemon Emerald, to go with the new Emerald colored controllers in Japan?

Actually, I'd recommend getting Ruby or Sapphire over any upcoming variant.  If you have one of those, you'll only need to find someone with the other to catch them all.  If you get "Emerald" or whatever comes out in the future, you'll have to trade with both Ruby and Sapphire owners.

Here's my question...

I have never played a single Pokemon handheld game (though I did rent the N64 ones and didn't like them, but those don't count).  I also did not like traditional RPGs up until about 2 or 3 years ago, but now I love them.  Would you recommend that a non-Pokemon fan pick up one of these?  and which one would you recommend getting (though it probably doesn't matter too much)?

Well, I'm not sure how you could expect to be a Pokemon fan if you've never played them, but they're basically standard RPG fair that's focused on collecting and growing your Pokemon.  Story isn't as emphasized as much as most console RPGs these days so keep in mind that the majority of the games involve battling and raising EXP levels. Hope that helps.

That's not how it worked with R/B/Y (I'm not exactly sure about G/S/C, but I thought it was the same). Yellow had all of the "rare" Pokemon that were missing from either Red or Blue, but was missing it's own Pokemon that were previously thought to be common, because they had been in both Red and Blue.

So all you needed was access to two colors in the series, any two colors, and you had a chance to get all of the Pokemon.

If you're buying only one version, then I don't think it really matters much which one you get. If you're buying two, because you have friends willing to play Pokemon, but not willing to buy Pokemon, then I think it's a good idea to get one of the first two, and then hold out for the third one, because you tend to get a bit more "variety" in the gameplay and storyline that way.

Red and Blue are the originals. They started (so they predate and weren't "affected" by) "The Pokemon Craze". They're simply GameBoy RPGs (from the original black and green "GameBoy" days) that can be judged like any other RPGs. IMO, they're a bit dry, but extremely unique, which makes it easy to see how they kicked off their own "craze".

Yellow has more of an anime feel. Which either helps offset the dryness of the first two, or makes you run away screaming, and cursing the name of Pikachu. Considering that you were able to rent the N64 games, I'd guess you can handle it.

Gold and Silver have a very cool 7-day-a-week 24-hour clock thing. The early bird gets the worm, so if you want to catch one you're going to have to actually drag yourself out of bed at 6:00 AM on a Sunday morning and get out there to hunt one. And then there's the coolness factor of the "shiny" Pokemon that you have a 1-in-100,000 chance of finding.

Crystal is just G/S with the chance of playing as a girl (or so I've heard).

hehe, i just noticed that i didn't mention ANYWHERE in my original post that I was really only considering either Ruby or Sapphire.  So, if that changes what anyone has to say about my Pokemon-stance, please do.

I have some questions about pokemon ruby and sapphire.
I know this game is supposed to be a lot better than gold and silver, but I have some doubts.

First, will it take longer to beat than G & S? I know those versions had a lot more gyms. Ruby and Sapphire only have 8.

I'm pretty mad about not getting 100 pokemon you would normally get? Why weren't they included as being catchable? Not enough space?  Can you catch pikachu?

Does the E-reader have any functions in this game?

Why don't they have the day and night features? I heard they're not in it.

Everyone is saying this game is so great, but i see more downgrades than upgrades. I preordered this game already, i'm just a little disapointed about some of the things I read about it.

How long will it take in this game to get to a trading center? I wanna get all 3 starting pokemon with the help of my brother's gameboy. (U know, my brother gets a new pokemon, trades it to me, restarts the game, gets another new one, gives it to me...and so on...

Know if there will be any cool code that duplicates your pokemon or items like in the gold and silver versions?

Are there any small features that are new, or have been taken away?

Do we still have breeding?

Can the pokemon still hold items?

Hope you can answer all this.

Can't tell ... not far enough into it yet.  Still, I don't think you can consider the game "beaten" until you've "caught them all".

Changing the Pokemon around keeps the game fresh and new.  But yes, Pikachu is in the game.

Quote

Yes, and it's pretty frickin' cool, too.  Once you've reached a certain point, there are challenges you can do by scanning cards that came with the game.  You'll need a friend and a link cable to do them, though.

Quote

Uh, because there wasn't enough room in the cart for the real-time clock and battery?  Dunno.  I do know that I had to set the clock in the beginning though, and it appears to keep time.  So while the graphics might not change for day and night, it does appear to be keeping time.   I might be mistaken, though.  I'm not too far into it.

You will likely not be disappointed once you get it.

You get to your first Pokemon Center within 10 minutes.

Hey, thanks for the impressions Rick, i cant wait for this game. But i have some questions, are any of the following Pokemon in the game, Luigia, Ho-oh, Raiku, Entei, Suicune. Just say yes, no or i dont no if ANY of those pokemon are present in Ruby/Sapphire. And can you trade pokemon from Gold/Silver to Ruby/Sapphire. Thanks in advance

Post by: Animelee on March 15, 2003, 01:28:31 AM
Actually, all the Pokemon are in Ruby and Sapphire. Their data, sprites, info, everything. They can be caught with Gameshark or Action Replay, but if you don't want to cheat, you'll wait for the official way to get them from Gamefreak and Nintendo. If you want to check out their hidden sprites for now, go here: http://user.yagb.de/meowth346/index.php?menu=sozai

All 386 sprites are there. There's a Pokedex there, too, having the information for all 386 (even the "unobtainable" Pokemon have new moves). They most likely will be unlocked by the new Gamecube game coming out in the summer in Japan, or by those e-reader features added in the English version.

Me, though, I am buying a Gameshark on Monday. A hardcore fan like me has to have access to all 386 Pokemon. Don't worry, though, I don't use cheating deviced to raise my stats or add illegal moves or anything, I just use them to catch all the unobtainable Pokemon at level 5. After doing that, I may as well sell the cheat device, since I'll have what I needed...ALL THE POKEMON TO TRAIN AND BREED! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Anyways, don't worry, people, they're all in there, ya just gotta wait. Or, if you don't wanna wait, get a cheat device and unlock 'em all! 386 Pokemon!

I'm really interested in some of the new changes they made.

At first I was a bit worried on two-on-two battles being more of a slap-on thing, but as I read more it seems that Nintendo really put an effort into modifying the moves for it. I'm sure that'll be fine.

Aside from that the new "Pokémon natural abilities" that I've read about sound really nice as well.

I'm not worried about not having the previous lands to go to, I'm happy enough with one land and of course being able to battle my friends .

I am curious about the GCN game... since PGC reported that it may require the GBA game to connect to it.

I do wish that Nintendo would drop the "Yellow" and "Crystal" type of thing... and just keep it Ruby and Sapphire.. I really don't wish for an "Emerald", "Diamond", "Topaz", or whatever gemstone they wish to place...

Actually, from what I've heard, there WILL be an offical way to catch the "hidden" Pokemon.  It may even involve the eReader.

I was actually thinking about that possibility... a "killer app" for the E-reader I guess you can say...

I am still very curious to the GCN Pokémon still. Hopefully we'll see something this E3, I'm hoping it won't be a Stadium either.

"And then there's the coolness factor of the 'shiny' Pokemon that you have a 1-in-100,000 chance of finding."

The first time my brother played Pokemon Silver the very first Pokemon he encountered was a shiny one.  At that point in the game he didn't have Pokeballs yet and thus couldn't catch it.  As you would expect he was quite pissed off.

My brother and I are greatly anticipating these games.  Unfortunately because we're Canadian when they'll be released here is kind of unknown.  Games usually come out here a few days later ranging from 1 day to sometimes 3 or 4.  My brother's on spring break right now and naturally wants to get the game while he doesn't have school.

"Everyone is saying this game is so great, but i see more downgrades than upgrades. I preordered this game already, i'm just a little disapointed about some of the things I read about it."

I agree.  G/S had the night/day thing and the ability to explore the world from R/B.  According to any reports I've read neither of those features are available in R/S (though the other world thing might be a secret).  Plus you can't trade with the previous games like you could with Gold/Silver.  Naturally because they're on different consoles I don't expect that to be a feature but it's still a key feature of Gold/Silver missing in Ruby/Saffire.  The amount of new stuff in R/S seems rather small judging by any previews I've read.

I'm a very happy person in my ruby version my version exclusive legendary turn out to be a shiny Pokemon. (Unless of course all of them end out to be shinny) And tomorrow I can accually understand what I have been playing all that time. I will be one happy gamer tomorrow.

I recently beat Sapphire. It felt too short for me. I mean the loss of  184 of the old pokemon. Not including Johto and Kanto and no side quest after the Elite 4.(Not including catching Rayquaza and the regis I caught those too) It just felt so short. Although i could understand nintendo's reason for not wanting to add those in. I guess they wanted a fresh start for pokemon and this is what ruby and sapphire is. I mean a lot of posts i saw on message boards people were saying that they didn't even want to use any of the new pokemon and just wanted mewtwo. I'm not like that i actually have a new favorite pokemon and thats blaziken. But i would have liked to be able to catch a cubone and a dratini. And i would have liked to be able to travel to Johto and Kanto. Anyway I decided to shark some of the old pokemon. Also there is a gameshark code that enables the Natoinal Pokedex. That version of the pokedex have the old pokemon dex entries starting with bulbasaur being #001 Chikroita #152 Treeko being #252 and Rayqaza being #384. There are 386 pokemon in total. There have been talk over at the gamefaqs board that Johto and Kanto will be able to be played by the gamecube version. Johto and Kanto can be made into the gamecube version and you upload your data from R/S on the gba and play Johto and Kanto in full 3d on the gamecube. I do believe that some kind of way Johto and Kanto will be able to be played because Johto and Kanto are mentioned in Ruby And Shappire. But there have to be someway that you can get the old pokemon as there are pokedex entries there and there is someway you get the national pokedex upgrade Legally. I don't see a nintendo event for  184 pokemon and i don't think the e-reader is the answer either i don't see nintendo making us buy  184 trading cards for the pokemon. And to prove my point that the old pokemon will be able to be caught later on is that there are 2 new unowns a ! one and a ? one but unowns are one of the 184 pokemon that can't be caught. I am almost certain that the Gamecube Game will have some part in it. I just hate how nintendo is doing this and taking our money. All well Until then i will be playing with my current team. Blaziken Maraowak Dragonite Medicham Absol and Kyrgoue

I agree...but i think nintendo cut some pokemon out was because there'd be too many pokemon to catch...of course its an easy game so catching those many pokemon will be a snap...but keep in mind this game is geared for a younger audience

I still do agree...nintendo should have added the other pokemon in...it be interesting to see Mewtwo in 2 vs 2 action

Yes it has a day/night function one of the first Pokemon you capture evolves different depending on the time. If its day it goes to a Butterfree type Pokemon, if its night it goes to a more moth like creature. And their are different Rarer Pokemon that come out at different times. They even made it dependent on early morning, morning afternoon, evening and night. I went through the Japanese games and didn't get most of the 203 Pokemon you can get between the two because I play on a pretty regular schedual (mostly in the night and the morning.)

Umm...That's not the way it seemed to me. I originally caught a Wurmple and a Cascoon.  The Wurmple changed into a Silcoon and then a Beautifly.  The Cascoon turned into a Dustox.  If it is time sensitive, it certainly doesn't show any visible signs of it.

Post by: Ian Sane on March 20, 2003, 09:20:35 AM
My brother, who is further in the game than I am, thinks that the Wurmple evolves into a different form depending on whether it's a male or female.

I got Ruby last night but unfortunately I didn't get home until late so I only ended up playing for 25 minutes or so.  So far I really like the game.  The best part is that I don't know about any of the Pokemon in the game so it really feels like I'm discovering new Pokemon instead of just seeing characters from the TV show.  Red/Blue was never quite as interesting because from the Pokerap I knew about all 151 at the time already.

Too bad Zelda's coming out so soon and will likely pull me away from this great title.  What's with that?  Nintendo will go for months without releasing anything and then releases two of their biggest games within a week of each other.  Interesting fact: In North America each new Pokemon game (as in not Yellow or Crystal) has come out the same year as a 3D Zelda game.

I have a question... is the move deleter back so I can delete those HM moves later on?

So far I beat the first gym and... well... the rest might be spoilers.

Anyways, it's really interesting to start up fresh and have all these unfamiliar Pokemons around me, as of this point I have yet to see a Pokemon from the old game.

Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you have four moves and learn another, you have to decide which move to delete.

I mean that in Gold and Silver there was a move deleter person in Blackthorne (is that spelled correctly?) City who deletes any move you currently have, including HM moves. I'm just wondering whether or not there's that type of person back again.

I just caught Rayquaza in Ruby, wasn't that difficult really. I had a harder time with the Elite 4, mostly cuz I was too poor to afford Full Restores and Revives.  I really miss my Mewtwo... Not cuz he's strong, just cuz he's my favorite. I hardly use him actually.

For the Move Deleter...He's in there, in Littlecove i think.

I have a question about the move guy. I think i heard that he can teach u'r pokemon a move that it would only get before u catch it or something. Anyways, i have a torchic and it learns flame thrower at like level 43 or something. But if i let it evolve, according to the move chart, it won't be able to learn flame thrower. So if i do let it evolve and it reaches level 43, will i be able to take it to the move deleter or learner guy and have it learn flame thrower? I need an answer ASAP, if you know. Thanks.

IMO surf it better that hydro pump and a Grouden/Sceptile(fully evolved trecko) armed with solarbeam combo works very nicely. Oh, and Giga Drain is a TM also, forgot which number though.

How do you get solar beam for treecko? Does he naturally get it, or does he have to use a TM? And do u know of a good site for a list of which TM's are what and when pokemon learn what moves and when they evolve and stuff? (can't find a strategy guide )

Sorry for talking about game play. Anyways, I really love the game too. I already put 30 hours into it, and am playing it almost nonstop whenever i have the chance to. The doubts I had before about losing too many features are gone. I guess that it may have been too hard to have over 350 pokemon being able to be caught. I just hope we can get them through the gamecube game, not the cards. I don't want to have to start paying so much money for those cards again.

For the other Pokemon is brilliant topic, there's already one going on. Anyways, I just wanted to say an idea i had.

Everyone knows that the GBA and the regular Gameboy color games won't work when you try to trade with each other (R/S won't work with Red/Blue or Gold/Silver). Well, with the new Pokemon game for gamecube, i think it would be a good idea for nintendo to make a feature that allows you to transfer your pokemon from previous versions(red, blue, gold, silver) onto your memory card for gamecube or something like that,      and then move those pokemon to Ruby or Sapphire. You would use the GBA to GCN link cable. Would that work? I think its a good idea, probably won't ever happen, but a good idea.
Title: Pokemon R/S/?
Post by: Bloodworth on April 07, 2003, 10:37:28 AM
Hmmm...actually, that may just be the case.  Since it's been confirmed that there are Pokedex entries for all the previous characters, we know they have to be unlocked somehow.  It would be perfectly conceivable for a new Pokemon Stadium game to allow you to transfer Pokemon from R/B/Y/G/S/C to a GC Box and then to Ruby/Sapphire. Very interesting conjecture.

(lets hope i can actually visit these forums)

My ruby version currently shows a time of 111:35.

I've spent a decent amount of time on the game.. (nowhere near my 290 hours on Silver, or my 999:59 on Yellow... Yet.)

The main reason that they removed many of the old pokemon is Balance.
This game is far more balanced than the old ones.  Psyhic are definately NOT the strongest pokemon now, considering the amount of new ghost/dark.

I love the new pokemon, sure, i miss the old ones also (wheres my eevee =/ ) and some of the pokemon choices don't make sense to me (Why is there slugma/magcargo and not a *decent* fire type)

Im not going to stop playing the game anytime soon, mainly becuase me and my friends (over 10 people around here that have it) are already setting up a tournament for the game.

I've been training my team up for the past 20 hours or so on the game, The elite 4 was actually *very* challenging to begin with, And the challenge level of the game definately seemed a step up from the previous versions.

I'm a giant pokemon fan though, anyone here who remembers me would know this, I definately suggest the game.

The new contest mode is actually *VERY* fun, and quite a bit challenging, becuase you don't know what could happen, and you have to try and think ahead.  Making pokemon purely for the contests was something I've done more than once (Smart Gardevoir, Beauty Milotic)

BTW: took me 45 hours, 33 minutes and 33 seconds to beat the elite 4 for the first time)

I was looking over my strategy guide and started noticing something. A huge difference between ruby and sapphire compared to the older games is how Pokemon get moves. In Red and Blue, if the pokemon was a water type, it had water moves, and basically that was it. Now,in Ruby and Sapphire, I think the balance is a little thrown off because of all the available moves for pokemon. Wingull/Pelipper(a water/flying type) can learn electric attacks, making it strong against way too many other types (rock, ground, water, fire, rock, grass, fighting, bug, and flying). I used my combat chart, and all of those are weakneses to water, flying, and electric.

I could give more and more examples, like why groudon can learn a grass attack(solar beam, i know it has to do with the sun, but its GRASS, Groudon is FIRE. Complete opposites.) I guess the game was made so that pokemon could learn types of attacks that seem like they could go well with the pokemon, but they are totally different in types. The only instance of that in previous games was with Chinchou(water and electricity). I think it is used too much now. I'm not talking about having 2 different types, like ground and fighting, i'm talking about being able to learn attacks that are totally different from the type the Pokemon is, like a psyduck being able to learn Iron Tail, a steel move, just because it has a tail. I don't remember the moves being like this in previous versions, but correct me if I'm wrong.

All of that does add extra strategy that can be used, but it would annoy me if i send out a grass type pokemon to be good against a water type psyduck, but it uses a steel type move on me, totally different than the water type it is.

And what are your opinions on that thing about the possible way to get pokemon from older version that i made a couple posts ago?

In resposne to the person above me...

Pokemon learning moves totally different from it's type has been in all the versions dude. I seem to recall in red/blue that you could teach Rhydon surf. BTW Groudon is a ground type.

about the trading, i thought that is what they were gonna do but i really HOPE NOT.

why you say...
I want to catch them in a new adventure which could be the cube version.  I really want to catch pokemon on the cube.  I magine the cool effects of capturing one.  It would be so rewarding in 3d.  I think, since you need R/S it should have 3d versions of kanto and johto where you character can go to.  That way you could even trade from old games and still have the 3d adventure.  Either way i want to walk around as a trainer and watch the battles in a field instead of a repetive background like the stadiums.

LOVE the mini-games though.
