TalkBack / Re: Darksiders II Will Make No Visual Concessions
« on: July 19, 2011, 10:37:08 PM »
Need some hater input? :P: This is all well and good for the year or two that the Wii U is on the market without next-gen competition, but the 720 and PS4 will outclass it soon enough.  And for the moment I already have two system that can produce PS360 quality visuals.  For me, the big question is, how much better the 720 and PS4 games will look and will I even care?  My second biggest question is how uncomfortable will that big clunker of a controller be?

I do REALLY REALLY like the idea of moving as much of the HUD off the main gaming screen as possible though.  That ought to increase immersion and for me that is a huge selling point.  I'm wondering how often the main HUD elements will be removed though.  They could just as easily follow standard HUD practices and just add a map to the controller screen.  The mockup Zelda shot was promising, but we'll see.

Abe: are you saying that the Master Quest port doesn't have the graphical upgrades of the original version?

That is nuts.  That greatly reduces it's value.

Nice.  Was there any pair of tests were all variables were constant except the 3D slider?  I'd be curious to see the difference on the battery for no 3D, mid 3D and max 3D.  My guess is that you'd see a small gain only for no 3D (significantly less CPU/GPU usage is required) and no difference at all between mid 3D and full 3D.

I also misread the headline, though I didn't register excitement but immediate disbelief.  There's no way this thing could come out in September, even in Japan.  If it comes out before the end of the year in Japan, then it will come out by the end of March in the states.  If it hits next year in Japan, then all bets are off.

I wrote a few reviews back in my day that, looking back, I don't know what the hell I was thinking.  I don't think I will name names though.

I wonder if gaming will ever escape the notion of a game being "valuable" merely because it takes up a lot of your time.

TalkBack / Re: Sony Wishes to Work with Nintendo to Promote 3D

Aw, widdle Sony man is butt-hurt. He should make a better product.

3DS looks so much better than 3D TV or theater projection. It's not just the glasses, but that is a significant part of it.

It really looks that much better than 3D TV or theaters?  But how much experience do you have with 3D TVs and Movies?  Perhaps adjust the sitting location helps (not easy to do in a theater, but much more feasible for home entertainment).  I've never seen modern 3D, just red/blue glasses.  I've got some Sly Cooper 3 glasses from E3 2005 that I use to watch various Youtube videos in anticipation of the DS.  Even this old tech works surprisingly well if you have good material and it's being displayed at an appropriate size.

Metroid Prime could work very well with hunter style controls.

I played it on my PC.  It was a fairly strong game with interesting visuals and a very good sense of humor.

I didn't like the previous site initially, but it grew on me.  This looks every better.  Looks incredible actually.  Congratulations.

If they're going to port games, why not prove this thing can approach GameCube visuals and port Metroid Prime.

ZOMG! Nintendo just admitted to the existence of the Virtual Boy! VB games on 3DS Virtual Console confirmed! Though seriously, has Nintendo ever talked about that system since it bombed?

I've let my little sis play them. She was quite competent by age 5. She's turned out fine and has perfect eyesight so far.

I have seen  a 4-5 year old at Wal-Mart with a DSi. It was rather comical because they were looking at screen protector accessories and the dad was bitching about how the boy was already ruining the screen on his. I almost said something but realized they probably wouldn't like what I had to say so I moved on.

Another one was left by a 4-6 year old in out store's bathroom. This is a delivery/carryout only store so he couldn't have been there long. I'm surprised people buy DSi's for basically toddlers.

Are you kidding?  It's like an electronic baby sitter.  Or ritilin.  It gets kids to sit still and leave you alone.  Of course parents buy them for the kids.

From the screen shots I've seen, the 3DS looks polygon challenged, but with excellent shading capabilities.  Honestly, this isn't a bad thing for games that will appear on such a small screen.  The industry is getting much smarter about its 3D hardware design.  Only Sony with their ulterior motive (pushing the Cell to be used in more than just the PS3; or trying to have the best specs on paper) comes up with poor architectures these days.

Ouch.  Yes, it had better have a parental lock... even then, if this *really* can cause damage to developing visual systems (and isn't just an overblown warning), then some idiot parent is going to screw up and let their kid play it 10 hours a day.  This isn't like 3D TV or the DS which had tiny market penetration.  The 3DS is going to sell in droves.

I would not be surprised if the 3DS has internal holographic memory mainly for the download of 3DS games and content.

Don't count on it.  It's still too early.  Think in terms of a future home console.

Why are 800 pixels only need for the horizontal resolution? Does the 3D not have any effect vertically?

It's basically two 400x240 screens vertically interleaved.

By the way, the technology probably doesn't work sideways.  i.e. the "book mode (holding the DS sideways)  is probably not an option for 3D games.

I doubt there will ever be a Classic Games game, it sounds like a classic example of just a simple tech demo to show off the 3D effect.

BNM, I don't think Miyamoto was playing dumb. Most people seem to think that the Nikkei article was just sloppily translated (it wouldn't be the first time we got wrong information due to a foreign language article being mis-translated).

Awesome, I hope we still get some 2D games like a new Castlevania using that style of 2D converted to 3D.

And I would TOTALLY buy a classic's collection of that type.

The resolution stuff confuses me too, I figured that a higher resolution than the PSP was a no brainer for a device coming out in 2010.

My phone has a 800x480 pixel display.  However, I've got to say, 3D games really don't need that kind of resolution.  It looks a little nicer, but I'm much happier that they seem to have spent the money on GPU power and 3D tech (you need twice the polygon pushing power, fill-rate and the special screen).

Is there any info or screens for the classic game collection?  I'm curious about that.  What is it classic arcade games (or console games) where the background layers appear at various 3D depths?  It would be mostly a gimmick, but could be kinda cool to see sprites doing that sort of thing.

I'm willing to bet all you folks talking bad about Just Dance both:

1) never played it and are basing your opinion on review scores more than anything

2) have very much enjoyed a Nintendo game that's gotten similarly bad scores

Just dance got an average ranking of 48%.  I can't think of any game I've played and enjoyed with a score that low.

My point is that I played the hell out of that game, and after about 4 hours (learning how to use the arm), I loved every minute of it.  I only wish it was longer and more polished, but the swinging mechanic was awesome.  Long story short, the game is 20 bucks now and anyone with an open mind ought to check it out.
