Was there an update that changed one hit kills or something? Because I'm positive I've been completely killed in one hit, many times in this game. In the Honest Game Trailer for BotW around 2:40 it shows a guardian one-shot kill Link, even with like 5 bonus hearts.

Guardians have always been able to one shot you.  I got the game on Day One back in March and was killed by a Guardian laser several times on the Great Plateau when I tried to fight it and my life was full.  I was also killed by a Lynel in Hyrule Castle when I did it early on.  I had only 5 hearts but my health was full and if I was hit by one of its sword slashes it would kill me instantly.  Of course if I was hit by it's charge attack it would leave me to a quarter heart, so that attack wasn't designed to instant kill but the weapon strikes were.

So yeah there are definitely attacks that will one shot you in this game.  Of course the Lynel and Guardians are the main roadblock enemies at Hyrule Castle so it makes sense Nintendo would want them to one shot players with only a few hearts and basic gear since otherwise most people could easily cheese it and beat the game in a few hours.

I still feel that Nintendo mucked up Master Mode with their alterations rather than just removing one-hit kill survival and doubling down on damage. While I’ll never say that I know how to design a game better than the folks there, I believe fixing the difficulty issues was far more straightforward than the tier-up/regeneration method they went with for Master Mode, as it changes the way the player must approach combat rather than retaining the original feel of the base game. Then again, I suppose that’s the reason it’s called “Master Mode” and not “Hard Mode” or “Master Quest.”
Master Mode is really good until you leave the Plateau.

The attack only wiped out all but a quarter, then fire damage (a second later) wiped out the last bit. If you pause and eat, you could survive it.

I was sort of thinking that, but I don't think fire damage kicks in that quickly. Either way, I'd still call that a one-hit kill.

So I recently finished the DLC and I must say it was awesome.  To me the game now feels complete since the DLC provided what I felt was missing the most, more challenging end game content.  I was disappointed that so many of the most hidden shrines where just Test of Strengths, instead of more complex puzzles, which I suspect was because they had to do some rushing for launch.  Well the DLC added 16 new Shrines, with most of them all being puzzle one with mostly more complex puzzles then what's in the base game.  The majority of these Shrines are easily the best in the game. Plus the new Divine Beast is easily my favorite dungeon in the game and actually plays out similar how I feel they should make dungeons in this type of Zelda where they're non-linear but still provide a more complex layer of puzzles that outside of the Camel beast, the rest of them kind of lacked.  Oh and Trial of the Sword was also amazing since it was one of the best parts of the base game, Eventide Island on steroids.

So I feel the DLC was easily worth the $20 I payed for.  It has a lot of my favorite content in the game and I'll eventually replay all of this in Master Mode something in the future, which will be more fun to play with the DLC content more organically incorporated in that playthrough then it was in Normal for me.  The Master Cycle Zero in particular will be a lot more fun to use when trying to find the remaining Shrines instead of being kind of worthless to me like it was in Normal mode since I found everything long before the DLC came out.

I started playing Zelda on my daughters account.

Unfortunately, you can’t transfer the save file, and you will have to start from the beginning so you have a save file on your account. Consequently, the account system is the only way to have a second save file for some games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other games, namely ports such as Cave Story+ still have multiple save files most likely because they were originally developed that way.

I guess the quest continues on my daughters account.... I'm too far in to start over now.
I just get nervous when she plays and starts throwing swords and eating meals... but she doesn't usually get to too far, so I can just loan back a save or two and it's like she never played.

This ain't an online game, so no big deal.

Another question though.
I've run across 2 battle shrines (test of strength) - I only have 5 hearts... I've come close to beating the Muwo Jeem Shrine, getting to that last super laser... but should I just wait on these and get more hearts first?

oh... and the Giants sitting at the ponds... I've run across 3 of them so far.
I've mostly avoided them, but how hard are they to beat? My ever dwindling supply of quality weapons is usually my reason for not bothering with most enemies I run across right now.

and damn, this map is HUGE.... I feel like i can practically travel anywhere at anytime and just suffer the consequences if I so choose. It's a pretty awesome feeling.

You can handle the fights if you have one of:
* enough stamina to make avoiding the lasers easier
* enough hearts to take a hit or two
* enough skill to learn to block effectively
* enough powerful weapons to make short work of the enemies (hint: electric weapons, arrows in particular, can be really useful here)

I don't remember skipping any of the fights after finding one, but there is also no harm in skipping them
(Except for the fact you are probably also skipping a powerful weapon and spirit orb as reward to finishing the shrine.)

Not that tough - and not worth avoiding in my opinion. How tough they are depend on their color. None are particularly difficult, although you might want to be sure there aren't other minor enemies in the area that will annoy you during the fight. Give it a shot and find out!

Some strategies that might help:
* strategy 1: they have a fairly obvious weak spot you can hit with an arrow to stun them temporarily
* strategy 2: if the fight is going poorly, you can often just "pickpocket" a weapon upgrade or two from their belt and move on

The Hinox is definitely the easiest of the "big" enemies in the game I felt. They're slow and have obvious tells and weakness. If they're wearing a barrel or two on their legs I always find it funny to set it on fire.

I think part of the fun in this game is trying to stretch your limits, so yes, I would say it's worthwhile to try to fight a Hinox and anything else you find. You may end up surprising yourself with what you learn when dealing with these things as a "weakling." The penalty for death is almost non-existent, so what you got to lose?

So I've ventured back to Hateno village, and decided to buy a house.
I'm 2 bundle of wood short, my axe broke, and I have no where near $3k in rupees

BUT I do have:
Amber x75
Opal x21
Luminous stone x18
Topaz x13
Ruby x4
Sapphire x7
Diamond x1

Now my question is, is there any good reason why I shouldn't sell all of these stones for cash once I have my 30th wood bundle?
I see in the description that some of these have elemental properties, but I am currently unaware of how to use them in such a way.
Is it worth the time to buy the house? Do I get to store a bunch of crap there so I don't have to constantly leave weapons/shields/bows/etc behind to be lost forever?

The Hinox is definitely the easiest of the "big" enemies in the game I felt. They're slow and have obvious tells and weakness. If they're wearing a barrel or two on their legs I always find it funny to set it on fire.

I took your advice, I went back to the Hewa Jeen Shrine, defeated that test of strength, took on a Giant Rock Monster, and then went after the red Sleeping Giant. Defeated them all last night. #feelsgoodman

**Is it ok to post spoilers? I feel like i have to be the last person here to play this game... there's no one I am spoiling at this point... if anything, I'm giving you all opportunities to show me things/ways I hadn't yet thought of.**

I did it the slow and tedious way for most of the Rock Monster and the Giant, using infinte bombs.
I used them to catch the Rock Monster in a loop, and then made "quick" work of him after that (circle bomb then square bomb, rinse wash repeat)
The giant monster I kept running under him, dropping bombs, detonating them, and sometimes he would sit, allowing me to run up slash and maybe steal what was around his neck. if I could move quick enough, get a shot off in his eye, but he mostly blocked me from doing that after the first time I hit him that way.

Now I got 4 others I found, 1 of which I can't face because of some Ice Minotaur, and a shrine on an island with another "strength challenge" I need to accomplish.
Oh, and that island where they make you play survivor.... I've done that probably a dozen times.
It's actually what prompted me to return to the main land and accomplish everything else I just talked about in this post. There's a big sleeping giant on there too, and I needed to know how to win before I waste all the time on that island yet again.

edit:
and now my horse gets stranded on an tiny island in a lake...
I jumped off to go bug hunting behind the sheep farm in Hateno Village.... and I can't find my wandering horse. I look out to the island on the lake... and there he is WTF.
Guess I have to go find another new horse, huh?

Why would I need so much wood?

actually I have lots of flint too... is it for starting quick fires? creating instant updrafts for advanced fighting arrow flight fight techniques? I suppose something like that would have made the sleeping giant really easy and quick to defeat. Too bad I don't know how people instantly drop that stuff and make it light on fire.... but I've never really tried. LOL
hold the wood and flint, drop and strike with a sword? is that how you do it?

I don't want to look up too many videos and guides as they reveal way too much, so I'd rather ask all of you who will answer specific questions and give helpful hints w/o revealing waaaay too much stiuff.

My general rule of thumb for these sorts of games is that money is everywhere, but items are not. Items, even common ones, must be collected in specific places, so they are more valuable than money. With this game in particular, clothing upgrades require a lot of materials to fully upgrade, and there are a number of fetch quests as well. You just never know when you might need those stacks of items.

That said, I still sold items when the stacks got too high, but I made sure to keep a healthy amount of them. In your stone example, I would sell some of those ambers, but I'd keep the rest. The main thing I sold though was meals, because cooking ingredients are common and I don't think most of that stuff is used in upgrades.

You'll definitely need more of most of the stones that you have.  But generally, like others have said, you want to sell a little and keep a lot.  That's what I did, but I actively looked for areas where I could do some mining so I always had cash.
