Title: Discussion of Forum Rules
Post by: Svevan on February 15, 2008, 07:12:54 AM
This document will be updated as rules are re-added.

There will be only one thread per game. Please do not begin threads focused on a single level, character, item, feature, etc, unless the game is large enough to warrant (please ask a mod before you do). Please also avoid padding threads with posts that do not pertain to the game being discussed. Side topics can always be split by a mod and made into their own thread in General Gaming or General Chat. Please PM a mod for help with this.

Please include the name of the game in the thread title that you are beginning. Please do not label the thread with anything extraneous; we are trying to be organized now that there are a lot of games and a lot of people playing games. There is no need to use thread titles as if they are newsposts.

Examples of poor thread titles:
Superman 64 being developed by team that did Virtual Chess 64 zomg lawler skates
Superman 64 mega-awesome-thread of HAWTNESS

Examples of good thread titles:
Superman 64, developed by Titus Interactive
Superman 64
etc.

We don't want to be strict but the shorter and more descriptive, the better. Please keep thread titles about accessories equally descriptive.

Last and most important, please stay on topic!

Thanks.

I don't really support the whole unified thread names idea.  It takes away our community's character. Something that without it, the old forums weren't worth a damn.  We may have new forums now, but I don't want to kill our character over it.

I think this might be fixing something that wasn't really broken.  As long as the name of the game was in the title some where, we were doing okay.

I don't think ours is a big enough community to warrant worrying about this, especially at the expense of the fun that makes the forums worth visiting in the first place.

NWR is against fun.

Nintendo is against gaming.

Maybe they want a more clean, structured forum to encourage continued community growth?  Sometimes it's hard to jump into a new community when their forums are full of in-jokes and crazy antics.

Moderator's Note: Feel free to swear now; anyone can censor swear words in their account options if they want, but if you de-censor your own swear words then everyone has to see them. So please, swear like you mean it.
I'm all for a little swearing, but is it possible to limit it to something like 2 or 3 words per post?  It's going to be fairly annoying when the twelve year olds find out.  The **** will hit the proverbial fan.

In all honesty, I agree with this new set of rules.

NWR is a great community and all, but lately I've been getting a tad annoyed by some things. A lot of threads lose their appeal because of too many irrelevant one sentence posts or failed attempts at humor. Most of the time, the thread is wasted on this. Not saying that we shouldn't be funny or be witty with our posts, but the point of discussion threads is to contribute ideas and opinions to a subject.

And before anyone says "butz dis is the interwebs! wi can do this LOL!", yes, we are on the internet and yes, you can get away with A LOT of stuff, but we are on NWR, which is a closed and private place on the net. If NWR says you can't do something you either accept it or move on. We all sign the ToS, and if we disagree with them we are kicked out.

Its as simple as that.

I've got no problem with the spirit of most of these rules, but the actual implementation and enforcement of these rules has the potential for squelching awesomeness out of our discuourse. As a forumer, I remain skeptical.

For example, those two "good" thread titles are really, really DRY.

A forum full of the following examples would lose some of our magic:

Superman 64, developed by Titus Interactive
Superman 64

What about a thread title like
I've bought Superman 64... what have I done?!?!

What would be wrong with something like that? It's got the game name there and it's topical and it's actually a thread title with some personality.

I'm with Kairon, guidelines are a good thing, but they don't need to be (and shouldn't be) enforced as strictly as they've been so far.

The way I see it, this new rule is just saying to make a clear and understandable title when posting rather than to make a mess.

Was this some ingenious idea to shut down new rule discussion by separating our responses from the actual rules themselves?  I am far too lazy to click on another section of a forum to read what I am complaining about.

That's what warnings/bannings are for.  Stop encouraging censorship! ;)

First the site loses its personality... now you're forcing the forums to?

Thumbs down from me.

Mods shouldn't be messing in this kinda stuff. The posters can take care of themselves in this department.  I think we're regulating something that wasn't in need of it.  I always had no problem figuring out what game was for which thread because they still had the game title in it, even when I was n00b I wasn't thinking about how disorganized the site was.

can we get rid of the "poll" rule or expand into reasoning into valid ways of wanting peoples views, in the 4 years of visiting.. seen 100s of times were regs try to boss newbies around, yet at the same time they get away with polls and oversided avatars

You can attach polls to threads now, hurrah! Unless its not enabled to regular users, but I think it should be. Whatever doesn't lead to long threads of terrible, one-word posts.

I'm all for requiring titles to be specific - vague titles (http://nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=24043.0) annoy me. But I don't like this rule that titles can't have anything extraneous. I don't see what possible harm or confusion could come from a title like "Superman 64 mega-awesome-thread of HAWTNESS".

On another note, I have no problem with Svevan's recent efforts to keep threads strictly on-topic.

TheRat, me.....

What did I do? I came in all minding my own business and got attacked from day one about typing and grammar. I was going though some rough times, lost my temper a time or two. But I tried to remain optimistic and humorous as I could. So I started life out on the gamefaq and official sega boards, you wanna complain about disorganised and sloppy, try starting a rational discussion with anyone there.

See I made the mistake of assuming if it was in the, then named Fun House, it was fair game. Little did I know it was a super mod I was making war with, of which I admitted my mistakes numerous times. The first time I was banned it was because I made the mistake of calling someone a name regarding their liking of a certain game, when in fact other regulars had made fun of me for liking a certain game they despised.

I tried to plead my case but because of the flaming that got out of place in that thread I made about Infernal Monkey and then the posts I made about Lindsay Lohan, I had no chance to defend myself. Then Wandering found a way to sneak me in the back door, of which I was opposed to doing and even sent emails to Johny explaining what had happened and was given permission to rejoin the community as long as I didn't lose my temper again, I went a long time without getting into any serious discussions, then I had one too many friends  losing their lives too suddenly and I grew careless and went on a flame rampage. It was something I said to Pale or Bloodworth regarding that Spike character which provoked my public apology to both parties.

Then when I thought things were back to normal everyone accused Spike of being my dupe account, which set me off again because I couldn't get anyone to listen to reason. So I was banned because of something I said to Smash_bros during that whole debacle. The only reason I was let back in was because of the new forums, it was Shyguy who told me about it. I made up my mind I would not fall for those traps ever again, I learned the hardway that certain forum regulars can get away with anything, so long as it is in the funhouse, were as I had to be extra careful.

I wasn't given a chance to 'conform" I was just banned for following everyone else's examples. So as far as that goes I am all for the new rules as long as they are clear to the user up front. I learned also that people will treat you better and be more tolerant of your personality flaws so long as you attempt to use proper grammar and correct spelling ;)

Any chance we could lift the ban on discussing politics?

I would personally like to see no topic off limits, and I think a reasonable amount of oversight and punishment for intentionally inflamatory and insulting people can make it work.

I'm a fairly liberal/progressive person and with a good number of conservative friends and while our discussions can get passionate/heated, it never boils down to insults because we have a certain amount of respect for each other, and I think most people on these boards have that and can constructively discuss something that heavily affects all of our lives (even the foreign members are affected by U.S politics). Those who can't maintain that level of respect/adulthood should be appropriately censured and then face temporary and permanent bans.

There is a huge difference between disagreeing with someone's idea, and telling them they are an idiot for holding a certain belief, and that difference is usually dependent on a person's level of maturity.

Think about it.

No.  This is a forum for a video game website.  Political discussion--among other topics--has no place here.
