Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 718: On the Edge of Blue
« on: April 20, 2021, 06:22:13 PM »
Thanks for responding about short JRPGs/RPGs. Because the names often defy any kind of sense, here are the titles mentioned.

Switch:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country
Cosmic Star Heroine
SEGA AGES Phantasy Star
Seiken Densetsu games (Mana series, also on 3ds)
Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend (esp. Final Fantasy Legend 2)
West of Loathing
Ys Origin (possibly any Ys that is not 8 or 9)
Moon
Tokyo RPG Factory games (Oninaki etc.)
STAR OCEAN First Departure R
the Atelier games (Atelier Ryza 2 is the most recent)
The Alliance Alive (also on 3ds)

3ds/ds:
Crimson Shroud
Retro Game Challenge (Guadia Quest:Feast of the Mad King)

Wii:
The Last Story

Elsewhere:
Half Minute Hero

Not recommended: KEMCO short jrpgs, all of them.

I admit to being weak to anything published by Circle Entertainment (ASH for 3ds, Mercenaries Saga).

TalkBack / Re: Ring Fit Adventure (Switch) Hands-on Preview
« on: October 17, 2019, 09:47:32 AM »
I am so happy to read this review that I could cry. I love Wii Fit U so much, mostly because I could DO it even though my body is old, slow, creaky, what have you. I built a few routines in that game, for good days, bad days, and "oh boy do I need help" days.

I was planning to get Ring Fit but, yes, I was worried. Everything in the promos seemed to say it would be okayish, but still....

This speaks to my concerns about intensity and adjustability, so yay! I can play! Wait, ..... I'll have fun too??? YAY!  I was always glad to do Wii Fit, but fun was less the point.

Quote
I can enjoy myself without being left out, which was frankly my biggest fear going in.

Excuse me, I need to go get a tissue (100% sarcasm free, I swear on my beloved leaf-green Wii U Fit pedometer).

Late to the party with a bunch of suggestions for music. I'll try to keep it to stuff that is currently on Switch, and soundtracks that really go well with gameplay.

Ori and the Blind Forest, chef's kiss
Bastion, folk + heartbreak (the running voiced commentary is also interesting)
Transistor, cool + heartbreak
Cuphead, excellent jazz and ragtime
de Blob, silly bouncy fun
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country (it wasn't just the combat that improved, although in the case of music it went from superb to superduperb)
I've heard good things about Gris and Celeste, haven't listened to the full OSTs

Nostalgia may color this for people but I respect it:
EarthBound

Here's hoping they come to Switch:
Nier Automata, another chef's kiss
Xenogears

Not on Switch, not for everyone, but definitely for me:
Jet Set Radio and JSR Future
Xenoblade X, Sawano brings the distortion and crunch, followed by delicate environmental dreaming (and yes I unironically like Black Tar, it is possible)

Love the show, NullNoMore

I was considering an Oxenfree/Splatoon graphic adventure game by Night School Studios as something fun. This could interest people that aren't so much Splatoon players as Splatoon fans, and the Splatoon world has enough lore that you could go deep. Not sure how to handle those voices though.

But then ... James said Rune Factory Stardew Valley/Xenoblade Chronicles X, and I could only think, "Please take all my money, take it now." Yes, yes, farming. Yes, yes, monsters and caves. Yes, yes, story delivery in tiny tiny endless doses. He missed the main point: dating. Let us all look deep into our hearts and admit that, yes, this is very important and Monolith Soft needs to deliver that.

I loved Octopath, and with my current life I appreciated that I could play for 15 minutes at a time and still feel like I had made progress. I appreciate smaller stories, rather than One Grand Quest To Save Everything (although I hear that postgame....)

I only felt under-leveled once, when I ignored the suggested level (did NOT make that mistake again); mind you, I always finished all 8 before moving up a chapter, and I made a point of swapping in the lowest party members whenever possible (for challenge and because I could sense how useful this would become).

I appreciate the honesty and detail of this and other reviews -- I can read between the lines and know which sticking points will be the exact opposite of flaws for me (and vice versa).

Also: shout out for that mmmmmmmusic, gosh it was good. The creepy Frostlands, Primrose's theme, Cyrus' waltz, mmm so good.

I'm excited for Etrian Odyssey. They've been a fav in my house, but we've always fought over the single stinking save slot for the games (usually: I get to play for the first month, then Eldest jumps the save, buhhhh). But with the Switch [cue angelic music] all will be resolved.

So, what are you guys looking for during the Treehouse presentation?

And there is a tweet from Saraya Saga saying XC2 in 2017. She telegraphed today's mention, and is suggesting stuff will be in the Treehouse. So THAT'S what I'm excited for.

Ryo_Hazuki-san on Miiverse says the cards are different sized than 3ds (somewhat larger), battery life is 8-9 hours, no touch screen (yet).

The controllers look kind of small -- I'm good, I'm snack-sized, but would they cramp bigger players?

Anyone know if there is any difference in the Japanese trailer? And how can I view/drool over it?

Merciful heavens, it's a capybara. If they hadn't already enslaved me as a fan, they would have done so now. (There will be blood as my children fight over it.)

Alas, my internet is chunky enough to make it impossible. I guess I will have to live with the sorrow.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Sun and Moon Announced For 3DS

While I was wiping my strangely damp eyes, a voice from the couch piped, "I call Moon." Which means Eldest Child will be getting Sun.  The battle lines in my house have been drawn.

LOL "Oh. ... Huh... Well, never mind."  I've been hearing that a lot in my house because of this darling game.  (Ages: elementary, high school, and beyond, although elementary kid returned to Pokémon after the 3rd floor.  Strangely, the CS grad is refusing to try it).

So glad to find these ... I was worried that something had gone wrong at E3 and there would be no podcasts (yes, I've been checking, my life is that empty). My upcoming long vacation drives will be all the better for this.
