Episode 409: Treedodgers
« on: December 14, 2014, 11:44:26 AM »

We've got reactions to Zelda's huge world, a follow-up on Wii U's health, and lots of new games!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/39221/episode-409-treedodgers

We are four this week, and Jon starts the show with a bang for a long discussion of the newest Legend of Zelda for Wii U footage. New Business begins in earnest with Jonny's first impressions of Xeodrifter for 3DS, plus a catch-up with Puppeteer, Sony's mouthy 2.5D platformer. Guillaume tries a demo for Shapes of Gray, coming later to Wii U, and he also gains a belated appreciation for Mario Kart 8. Before the break, James takes just a few minutes to report on the game he just couldn't resist, Phoenix Wright Trilogy.

We have a true feature segment for you this week, as a piece of pre-emptive Listener Mail and the timely release of NPD sales data for November provide the perfect opportunity to revisit one of our most famous episodes on its first anniversary. We're brutally honest about the situation, as always, but things really do look better these days. There will be more variety next time, so please write an email about any old thing!

Nobody on the podcast bought Captain Toad?
I got hooked on the white stuff back in the 70s.

You guys didn't mention an Animal Crossing game for Wii U. That has better sales potential than Metroid or any other franchise Nintendo hasn't used for Wii U yet.

I can see a Wii U successor being released in 2017 at the earliest. You can take advantage of price cuts and new partnerships to help them out with that final year. As for the 10 games for 2015:

-Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
-Splatoon
-Mario Maker
-Star Fox
-The Legend of Zelda
-Mario Party 10
-Devil's Third
-Xenoblade Chronicles X
-Yoshi's Woolly World
-???

Captain Toad is a wish list title for both Guillaume and myself. Maybe one of us will get it at Christmas. I am on a near-total moratorium on buying new games until my new job starts. I'll probably make an exception to download the Bayonettas so I can get a last shot of DDP credit.

Great episode guys. Your discussions about Zelda Wii U, Puppeteer, Shapes of Gray and Gui and Karen's MK 8 adventures were highlights. And it was good that you revisited your State of Wii U thoughts from a year ago. If Nintendo hadn't turned things around, I have a feeling RFN would have had to change its name to reflect new topics. :p

Great to see Iron Man Lindy return. Sounded like he was speaking from London via shortwave, but that's okay. A reduced quality sounding Lindemann is better than most other podcast's crystal-clear musings. BTW I don't know why the Now Playing at NWR segment features only Jon and James these days, but I mostly approve. I feel that James and Jon's relationship has only deepened, if you will, as a result of making these segments a duo. Kind of an ebony and ivory thing going on, where does one end and the other begin, who knows? You could tell last week that James missed Jon in the segment. Jonny did his best, but lack of practice didn't leave him with his A game. Whereas even lower quality audio didn't prevent Jon from getting back in the groove smoothly. The Bear Jones seemed to approve and so do I.

If you haven't already, that's ample reason to go back and listen to the Child's Play Marathon from this year; Jon and James knocked it out of the park SO hard with Unlicenced To Drive.

Thanks.

Jon and I started doing them because the script was never ready when we finished recording RFN, so we would pull up and record on a later date. We determined there's an air to when we do it - a certain willingness to say things that we should be smart enough not to.

I mean I compared a game to racist attitudes. I'll accuse members of the site of believing things they clearly don't, or I'll find the most absurd way to frame an article.

Ultimately though, our goal is to interest you in the content we've featured. I hope that sometimes we motivate a few clicks.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Now Playing has sort of evolved organically into James and I tag-teaming it out of time management, really.  It's on me to write Now Playing and I get home just as the podcast is starting, so instead of rushing to write something half-assed I'd rather do a little research and come up with a better script.  James and I typically have time on Fridays after work to do it after I prepare a script, so that became our M.O. I'm glad at least a few people enjoy our twisted take on NWR content!
