Podcast Discussion / RFN RetroActive (Jr.) #33: Blaster Master
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:23:12 PM »
Sometimes, when you leave luck to heaven, things turn out pretty well. That was certainly the case when we left RetroActive up to Nintendo's iron hand, and they provided... the beloved, unique, awesome Blaster Master! This NES classic from legendary developer Sunsoft is available from ye olde Virtual Console on no less than three different platforms: Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. For the originalists, the NES cartridges should be easy to find -- Blaster Master was quite a popular game in its day.

Please use this forum thread to discuss the game, and remember, we'll be looking for great posts to be quoted on an upcoming episode of Radio Free Nintendo!

Hi everyone! This is the place to discuss Twilight Princess for RFN's upcoming RetroActive feature. Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions, and share tips about the game. As a reminder, we will quote some of the best posts from this forum thread and read excerpts on the podcast during the RetroActive discussion, which is currently expected around mid-May. That gives everyone plenty of time to play through this lengthy adventure, one of the only games released on two different Nintendo consoles simultaneously (at least since the mid-90s).

We hope you'll play along with the RFN crew and discover, or re-discover, this unique entry in the Zelda series! Of course, Twilight Princess is available for both GameCube and Wii. You may want to note which version you're playing, especially if discussing controls.

This is the official discussion thread for the winning game of our latest RetroActive poll. Pokemon: The Trading Card Game was first released on Game Boy Color and is now available on the 3DS eShop.

Comments here may be quoted for the RetroActive feature on Radio Free Nintendo. Please try to stay on-topic! This is also a great place to request or provide help for other players.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Network ID Exchange (Wii U and Miiverse)
« on: May 30, 2014, 05:00:03 PM »
Thanks to Nintendo Network, we don't need Friend Codes to play Wii U games online or to interact on Miiverse through Wii U, 3DS, or web browsers.

Please use this thread to share Nintendo Network IDs (NNIDs). Remember to protect your private information at all times and follow Nintendo's rules of conduct when interacting on these platforms!

Mine is JonnyNWR. My friend list is currently full (let's hope for the maximum to increase some day), but you can follow me to see Miiverse posts. I will occasionally delete people who haven't been online in a while, or to make room for real life friends, so it doesn't hurt to send an invitation anyway.

5
Please use this thread to trade Friend Codes, set up matches, and discuss the online multiplayer (plus maybe other modes). Some posts from this thread may be quoted on an upcoming episode of Radio Free Nintendo when we discuss the game!

6
Please use this forum thread to lobby votes or ask questions about the nominees! The plan is to set up online matches in the winning game so that the RFN hosts and listeners can play together before Nintendo WFC is shut down in May 2014.

*Note: Excitebots was not released in Europe because Nintendo hates you. But we love you and figure it's worth consideration. Besides, you can easily figure out a way to play it on your old Wii.

Hi everyone! While we are still scheduling the live event for this special, telethon-backed RetroActive feature, I thought it would be good to provide a central location for people to discuss the games in advance. We won't quote any posts from this on the live show (since you'll just be able to call in), but the discussions usually take on a life here at the forums that I wouldn't want to deny these weird and wonderful racing games.

**********************************
The Live RetroActive event will take place Saturday, Jan. 25 right here on NWR! Bookmark the RFN Live page now, come back Saturday 2pm EST for sweet F-Zero action!

Podcast Discussion / RFN RetroActive #28: Pandora's Tower
« on: August 02, 2013, 04:56:53 PM »
Please use this thread to discuss Pandora's Tower, available worldwide on Wii. Posts from this thread may be quoted on a future episode of Radio Free Nintendo, when the RFN crew discuss the game for the next big RetroActive feature.

Podcast Discussion / RFN RetroActive #28 Poll
« on: July 21, 2013, 02:00:10 PM »
Please discuss the nominees and feel free to make the case for your pick! All of these are available for $30 or less at multiple national retailers in the U.S., and hopefully elsewhere too.

Please use this forum thread to discuss Mega Man 3, which won the poll to become the latest RFN RetroActive game. It is available on both Wii and 3DS Virtual Console, as well as the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GameCube/PS2, and of course the original version is on NES.

While comparisons to other Mega Man games, including MM2, are inevitable, I would encourage everyone to focus on this particular game and its own merits. We will try to do the same on the podcast.

Just to remind you all, we will be quoting your forum posts here to help drive the podcast discussion. However, the current plan is to record that segment on Thursday, May 2, so please post your comments by then if you'd like to be read on the show.

Podcast Discussion / RFN RetroActive #27 Poll: Epic Mega Man Showdown
« on: April 12, 2013, 10:37:36 AM »
We recently discussed a Listener Mail question about our preferences between these two classic action games, and all of us had mixed feelings. It's time to settle it once and for all, the only way we know how -- your votes! You have until Wed. April 24 to vote. Both of these games are on Wii and 3DS Virtual Console, as well as included in the Mega Man Anniversary Collection (beware that the GameCube version has weird controls; PS2 version is fine).

This is the official forum thread for the RetroActive discussion of Ys Book I&II. All posts here will be considered for use on the podcast when we talk about the game for an upcoming episode.

Ys Book I&II is an action-adventure game similar to 2D Zelda, but the combat is notably different. In the Turbo CD version (available on Wii Virtual Console), there is no need to swing a sword. Instead, your character (Adol) stabs enemies by running into them at an offset, so that their own weapons don't hurt him in the impact. The game also has magic and equipment, not to mention a classic story that features FMV animation and one of the earliest examples of voice acting in a console game. One of the game's most defining characteristics is the exuberant heavy rock soundtrack enabled by the original CD format.

There are also versions available for DS, PSP, and PC (including Steam).

Podcast Discussion / RFN RetroActive #26 Poll
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:19:03 AM »
Special thanks to everyone who posted suggestions in the RetroActive Nominations thread. Most of these selections came from over there. There's no particular theme this time, just a bunch of interesting games that are widely accessible. Feel free to ask questions, discuss the games, or recommend your favorites below.

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #24: Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
« on: September 15, 2012, 12:10:16 PM »
Please use this thread to discuss the winner of our latest RFN RetroActive poll, which was Kirby-themed for the character's 20th anniversary. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is a GBA title that was also included in the 3DS Ambassador program. The original version supports multiplayer for up to four players -- if you get a chance to try this, or have memories of doing so, we'd especially like to hear from you.

Remember that posts in this thread may be quoted (or paraphrased) on Radio Free Nintendo when the podcast crew discusses the game on an upcoming episode.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED:
- A door with a glowing star on top is one you haven't yet entered. Try to find and enter every door!
- You can warp back to the hub area by holding L for a few seconds.
- Calling the other Kirbys (press R) is useful if you're low on health or want extra help on a boss.
- On the pause screen, press select to cycle through to the map. It shows how your current room connects to others; arrows mean the connection is one-way, while a solid line means the doorways work both ways.
- If you ever find a giant pink switch, be sure to step on it. This creates a shortcut from that point back to the hub world, which is very useful when you want to come back and explore alternate paths.
- Only certain Copy powers can destroy gray blocks, which often block secret doors. Try finding (and keeping) Hammer, Missile, Burning, and a few others for this purpose when you're specifically searching for secrets.
- The game auto-saves pretty often, although there's no indicator. Warp back to the hub area before quitting, if you're paranoid.

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #24 Poll (Kirby Theme)
« on: September 01, 2012, 01:46:26 PM »
Note: All of these games are available on multiple platforms, and some will be on the upcoming 20th Anniversary Collection, so we hope many people will be able to participate.

General Chat / Space Questions for Jonny?
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:37:53 PM »
I really enjoyed Zach's dinosaur Q&A on the recent Connectivity and would like to do one about spaceflight. First, a few guidelines:

- I can't talk about where I work or what I do for a living, so don't bother asking.
- The topics I know best are space suits, human spacecraft, and rocketry. I also know a fair bit about astronaut selection and training, as well as how people live in space.
- I don't know a whole lot about astronomy or robotic missions, but I'll try to answer these if they are easy.
- I can talk a little about space policy but preferably in a historical sense, not what's going to happen next.
- You really don't need me to debunk the Apollo hoax theory. An excellent repository on this idiotic conspiracy theory can be found here: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

Space is a fun discussion topic, and it seems most people are curious about one thing or another. Ask away, and if we hit critical mass then I'll try to record a Connectivity bonus segment with responses.

Please use this thread to discuss Wario Land 4! Remember, posts in this thread may be sampled and read on the podcast when it's time for us to record the feature discussion.

Looking for a copy? Check the used section at your local game stores. Also, it's available as a free download to 3DS Ambassadors.

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #22: MotoHeroz (WiiWare)
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:46:59 PM »
Please use this official forum thread for discussion of MotoHeroz for the RFN RetroActive feature. We'll sample some of the best comments in this thread to be read on the podcast when we discuss the game in a few weeks.

MotoHeroz is a physics-based vehicular 2D platforming game by RedLynx, developers of the smash hit Trials HD on Xbox Live Arcade and the upcoming sequel, Trials Evolution. You can read Jared's review of MotoHeroz here:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/27887

For a different perspective, also check out Aaron's impressions:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/25523

MotoHeroz is available from the Wii Shop Channel for 1500 Wii Points in both North America and Europe. There is also a version for iOS but officially, we will be discussing the original WiiWare version. If you are playing the iOS version, please clearly say so -- the comparisons may be quite interesting, but we do want to avoid confusion.

Podcast Discussion / RFN T-Shirt ON SALE NOW!!! - Official Thread
« on: April 04, 2012, 07:53:40 PM »
http://ninwr.spreadshirt.com/

Thanks largely to our friends Amanda Albert (graphic design) and David Ochart (character artwork), the Radio Free Nintendo official shirt is finally available. The two versions differ only in shirt brand/quality. Please read the in-store descriptions for more details.

All profits from shirt sales will support NWR! We'd love to hear your comments and see photos of awesome people doing awesome things while wearing this crazy shirt. And if you're not interested in this design, we might have more options in the future.

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #22 Poll: WiiWare Edition
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:47:18 PM »
WiiWare is probably fading out in advance of the Wii U release (and whatever next-gen digital platform it carries), but several interesting games have been released on the shop over the last year or so.

FAST is a futuristic racing game from Shin'en Multimedia, notable for its difficulty, polished visuals, and sense of speed. It's available for 1000 Wii Points.
NWR Impressions: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/26346

escapeVektor, Ch. 1 is an action/puzzle game from Nnnnnnooooo. It's their first title since hitting the jackpot with the My Notebook series of DSiWare apps. It's available for 500 Wii Points.
NWR Review: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/27953

MotoHeroz is a vehicular 2D platformer from RedLynx, also known for the Trials series on PC and Xbox Live Arcade. This is a similar game with less realistic physics and more cartoony visuals. It's available for 1500 Wii Points.
NWR Review: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/27887

All of these games are available in North America and Europe.

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #21: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
« on: January 13, 2012, 07:33:28 PM »
Please use this thread to discuss Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones for RFN RetroActive. The game is available free for 3DS Ambassadors, or you can look for the original GBA cartridge on the secondary market.

We'll be taking excerpts from posts in this thread to be read on the podcast. Please help keep the discussion on topic!

23
Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #21 Poll: GBA Ambassador Edition
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:17:26 PM »
Note: These games may already be available to you for free as part of the 3DS Ambassador program. They are not available for purchase through the eShop at this time, if you bought a 3DS after the Ambassador program enrollment expired. However, all three are readily available in their original GBA cartridge format for approximately $20 or less, and they will play on any GBA system as well as the original Nintendo DS and Lite.

Please use this thread for discussion of the latest RetroActive poll selection, River City Ransom (NES). This is a beat-em-up/RPG hybrid with 2-player co-op, starring characters from the "Kunio-Kun" franchise that is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary in Japan. This game is available worldwide on Wii Virtual Console for about 500 points ($5.00 USD).

Note: Excerpts from posts in this thread may be read aloud on the Radio Free Nintendo podcast when we discuss the game!

Podcast Discussion / RetroActive #20 Poll: Grab Bag Edition
« on: October 02, 2011, 11:11:26 AM »
Notes:

- All three games are readily accessible in North America.
- River City Ransom is on Virtual Console worldwide.
- We are going to three nominees to give each game a better chance to win (less fractured voting).
***Two of these games were suggested in the Nominations thread, so thank you!***

Voting will end Thursday, Oct. 13th.
