Nintendo Gaming / Civ 6 coming to Switch: RIP your free time
« on: September 07, 2018, 09:42:41 AM »
Confirmed early this morning.

https://civilization.com/news/entries/civilization-vi-nintendo-switch-console-november-16-2018/

Sid Meier's Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes the latest game updates and improvements, and four pieces of additional content which adds four new civilizations, leaders, and scenarios:

- Vikings Scenario Pack
- Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack
- Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack

Key features for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI on Nintendo Switch include:

- PLAY YOUR WAY: The path to victory is the one you determine. Become the most scientifically advanced civilization, dominate through sheer military power, or become the foremost destination for the cultural arts.
- THE WORLD’S GREATEST LEADERS: Play as one of 24 different leaders from various countries around the world and throughout history. Build an empire of lucrative trade routes with Cleopatra of Egypt, flex the military might of your legions with Trajan of Rome, or develop a powerhouse of culture with Hojo Tokimune of Japan. Each of the leaders can be played any way you prefer, with unique abilities, units, and infrastructure in their quest for victory.
- EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map. Settle in uncharted lands, improve your surroundings, build new districts, and see your cities – and your civilization – prosper.
- ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.
- DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.
- EXCITING AND UNIQUE SCENARIOS: Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes four playable scenarios, each with a different setting and style of gameplay inspired by history. Be part of the colonization of Australia in “Outback Tycoon,” defend Poland from invaders in “Jadwiga’s Legacy”, choose a Viking leader to plunder Europe in “Vikings, Raiders, and Traders!”, or conquer the known world in the “Conquests of Alexander.”
- COOPERATIVE AND COMPETITIVE MULTIPLAYER: Up to 4 players can cooperate or compete for supremacy via a wireless LAN.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI will be available on Nintendo Switch on November 16, 2018.

My dad played the crap out of previous Civ games so he is going to flip when he sees this.

Nintendo Gaming / The "Digital Games getting Physical Release" Thread
« on: March 14, 2018, 10:43:15 PM »
So. This is happening. And it's not just Limited Run doing physical prints of digital indies anymore, Super Rare Games are also getting into it. So in attempt to keep track of all this I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to keep track of all these upcoming physical releases. This OP will be constantly updating so feel free to drop in every once in a while:

Limited Run Games
Switch Limited Run #1 - Thimbleweed Park - Regular (Preorder Closed) / Big Box Edition (3,000 copies)
Switch Limited Run #2 - Mercenary Kings - Regular (Open Preorder) / Tribute Treasure Box with Flinthook (3,000 copies)
Switch Limited Run #3 - Flinthook - Regular (Open Preorder) / Tribute Treasure Box with Mercenary Kings (3,000 copies)

Future Releases
- Saturday Morning RPG
- Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten

Super Rare Games
SRG #1 - Human Fall Flat - Regular (5,000 copies) / Deluxe and Vinyl Bundles Sold Out
SRG #2 - The Flame and The Flood - Regular (5,000 copies)

Future Releases
- Yooka-Laylee?

I'm debating whether or not to include games from other publishers (like Runner 3, even though that game always had a physical release planned for it, and is coming out from a major indie publisher) but for now I'll keep it limited to the boutique retailers. If you guys know of any others doing this let me know.

Noted game delayer Jason Schreier has been sent art assets by a source that confirm the existence of the rumored Mario and Rabbids RPG crossover.

http://kotaku.com/source-the-rumored-mario-x-rabbids-rpg-is-real-coming-1794849712

- Called "Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle"
- Uses Ubi's proprietary Snowdrop Engine (The Division, South Park Butthole Pun Game)
- Turn-based combat
- Local co-op because of course
- Wacky things like Mario holding laser beam guns and the Rabbids dressed as Mario characters taking up four slots in the character select screen.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo of America's troubling Indie gatekeeping
« on: April 26, 2017, 06:50:20 PM »
NintendoLife published a brilliant piece regarding the issues surrounding NoA's communication(or lack-thereof) regarding indies and their developers. I've pasted a few choice nuggets but the entire piece is well worth a read, so please do.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/04/feature_the_growing_pains_of_curation_on_the_nintendo_switch_eshop

Quote
When the Switch was then unveiled in October 2016 and some developers, many of them in Europe, boasted of the fact they were already working on the hardware, frustration was inevitable. For the veteran publisher / developer comfortable with being quoted in this article - Nindie 1 - all they experienced from Nintendo of America was a cold shoulder and a lack of detail. The tone was an issue, in addition to the slowness and infrequency of communications.

Quote
Rather like with Nintendo publishing and acquiring the IP rights to Snipperclips - Cut it out, together!, which the UK-based developer was clearly happy to produce with Nintendo in Europe and Japan, Nintendo of America initially sought ownership of the potential pitch from Indie 1. It was a proposal that never got far as, ultimately, this studio didn't want to go down that route. The problem was when the studio's enquiry then shifted to its own hopes, in this case porting an existing project.
"We asked about porting but it wasn't really answered. They didn't seem like they were interested in that yet.
I think we just went into it expecting to talk about our current game and they just wanted us to pitch something new and exclusive. And all subsequent queries about our current game were ignored."

Quote

What we're also left with is the big question - how far should curation go? After all, different regional approaches still bring us games like Vroom in the Night Sky, which we feel is a poor game from any angle. Inconsistencies in policies are also baffling, in which we get quality re-releases like the Tomorrow Corporation trilogy but see the likes of the brilliant Axiom Verge get rejected.

I don't want the conversation to go down the NinjaPig/RCMADIAX route of quality. I think we can all agree that an eShop with higher standards is good for everyone involved. I do feel that if NoA's Nindie squad is indeed understaffed and ill-equipped to handle the volume of requests from indie developers then something needs to be done.

Also I find it rather insulting to want to demand Switch-specific features from indie developers in exchange for entrance into the eShop. Nintendo is in no such position to want to demand anything from anyone, much less small dev teams.

Quote
(...)the team is also using a curation remit to "try and force developers to create exclusive game modes or commit to some time-based exclusivity just for the right to release games on their system". The word "arrogant" is used when referencing the drive by Nintendo to gain some forms of exclusivity while offering little in return, a conflating of publication approval with "strongarm" demands for unique content.

Nintendo Gaming / Eurogamer: SNES Mini is a thing, coming Holiday 2017
« on: April 19, 2017, 10:13:27 AM »
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-04-19-sources-nintendo-to-launch-snes-mini-this-year

Quote
The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

No brainer really, but I do wonder if enough goodwill has been lost already to where people just won't care enough about the thing like they did with the NES Mini. The jokes will write themselves though. I can't wait to not get my hands on one of these...

Also I hope Nintendo wasn't waiting until E3 to announce this cause that would piss me off.

Nintendo Gaming / Breath of the Wild Test Kitchen: Share your Recipes!
« on: March 06, 2017, 03:33:06 PM »

So until Aonuma gives us the cook book DLC were all so desperately deserve, I thought it would be a cool idea to share some of the meals we've created in the game and put them in a thread for easy reference. I'll play the recipes in this OP and you guys can chime in.

Meals
5 Spicy Peppers (Spicy Sauteed Peppers) - Cold protection for 12:30 minutes.
5 apples (Simmered Fruit) - 5 hearts
1 Raw Prime Meat/1 Bird Egg/ 1 Hylian Rice/1 Pepper/1 Apple (Spicy Fried Egg and Rice) - 9 hearts, 6 minutes cold protection.

Elixirs

I'll add more when I get home.

This is another snap poll, but it can also evolve over time. I think it can be a good way to see how the community tastes go. I'm only using officially announced 1st party games but I'm making an exception for the unannounced Pokemon game because it was confirmed by an executive from the Pokemon Company.

Right now, the moment you read this thread, fill out the games you are 100% sold on Switch. You can change your vote as more details come but I am curious to see how everyone feels about the games announced so far.

I'm going with Breath of the Wild and Fire Emblem Warriors for obvious reasons. I'm also adding Super Mario Odyssey because New Donk City. Splatoon 2 is still up in the air pending more details of Nintendo's online services. I don't care for battle mode so I'm not going to spend another $60 on Mario Kart 8. I don't really care for 1 2 Switch and Snipperclips if they don't offer any form of online play and I haven't finished Xenoblade Chronicles or XCX so at this point why even bother with Chronicles 2.

I want to know what you guys think!

9

It's Fire Emblem....and it's a Musou game. That's all we know right now but I am hyped.

Also, there will be a Fire Emblem Direct on Wednesday January 18 at 2pm PT. They will apparently be talking about this game, Fire Emblem Fates DLC and the Fire Emblem Mobile game.

Nintendo Gaming / Let's talk about Nintendo Switch's online service...
« on: January 13, 2017, 11:20:44 AM »
So Nintendo kinda threw a curveball with their online services on Switch. I don't think it's for the best. Here's the details so far

- Free Online at launch: sign in on your Nintendo account, and you can play online co-op and competitive multiplayer games.
- Paid Online at Fall: With a smartphone app you can connect to Switch and have online lobbies and voice chat (a free version of this will come during the Summer).
- Monthly Game Download: You get to play a NES and SNES game with newly added online play for free for a month. The wording though makes it sound like you'll only have access to that game for that specific month only. Then you lose it.
- Exclusive deals: Yay, more 10% off deals!

I am divided on this. On one hand, Nintendo has very little to offer online that I feel like they really need to make this service worth it. Which means that fringe games that didn't have online now need to have online. Mario Party games need to have online, Mario/Kirby/Donkey Kong games need to have online co-op. Nintendo needs to go all in if they expect people to pay for this.

The monthly game thing looks like a terrible sell. I can understand a situation where you lose your games if you let your subscription expire. But I find it ludicrous to have access to a game for just one month and then either lose it forever or be forced to buy it.

As it stands, this does not feel like a good step up.

Nintendo Gaming / FAST RMX (Switch) - It's the final lap!
« on: January 13, 2017, 02:35:31 AM »
Because we still don't have F-Zero, FAST RMX is coming to Switch.

- 1080p
- 60FPS
- 30 tracks
- 15 machines

So...how many times does Nintendo have to fail in order to understand that their failure to meet demand for their products at launch is hurting their already fragile business? They keep doing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

The announcement of the NES Classic was a viral hit and it tapped into a lot of people who either are casual gamers or lapsed gamers. It touched into that nostalgia. Nintendo had to understand that I was going to deliver a hit. And yet here were once again, with hardcore gamers and scalpers being the only people who can buy the system at launch and stores selling out their stock almost instantly. Check one of the links I posted above and you'll see journalists talking about how many pageviews their NES Classic stories got. Most stores got units in the double digits, going from as low as 20 to as many as 80. Some stores even got as few as 5 units! Crazy!

And fine, you want to talk me out of being angry because Limited Editions sell out in 2 minutes, go right ahead. But this was a product aimed at a casual market and the fact that people won't be able to buy it in the near future is a bit frustrating. Specially when I'm thinking of getting one as a gift for several people. It's insane.

For the record, I was able to get an NES Classic at a local Wal-Mart, after I went to my local Best Buy and saw a line of 100+ people wanting to buy 80 systems. Both stores had a 1 system per customer limit.

Sure, teh b-ball doesn't get the love around these parts as other sports. We don't have our fearless leader talking about the Milwaukee Bucks on Twitter. Or get bonus segments on podcasts like hockey does. But who cares. This thread is all about celebrating our love for the roundball. Cue the music!

Even after losing a crushing 7 games series, and with their MVP/human cheat code Stephen Curry playing below his ungodly self during the Finals the Warriors are still far and away the favorite to win the 2016-17 NBA Championship. Not only do they boast the core of Curry, human microwave Klay Thompson, habitual nut puncher Draymond Green and all around old guy Andre Iguadola but they've made a few notable additions.

An MVP going to a fully stacked team seems unfair, but there's fair question to how Durant will mesh with the rest of the offense, and how shots will be distributed from now on. There's also the question of depth and avoiding injury. Also, we need centers. But never fear because...

We also have Zaza Pachulia! The man who's biggest claim to fame is the video above. In addition he was nearly voted to the All-Star game this year thanks to the votes from his home country of Georgia.

Need more reason to root for this super team? Well, you'll certainly love the hijinks of one JaVale Lindy McGee! Don't know who he is? Check out this "highlight" reel!

In addition to all that glorious talent we also have your usual assortment of unabashed ring chasers (David West), scrappy guys off the bench (Shaun Livingston, Anderson Varejao), scrubs (James Michael McAdoo, Ian Clark, Kevon Looney) and rookies who fell into a golden opportunity but will never play (Damian Jones, Patrick McCaw).

So what are you waiting for? Come join the hype train! Warriors always come out to play!

Nintendo Gaming / Stardew Valley coming to Wii U (Q4 2016)

It’s very important to me that playing Stardew Valley with console controllers is intuitive and effortless. I’ll be the first to admit that the current, rudimentary controller support in the PC version is far from ideal, and it will need to be adjusted prior to the launch.

I’m also excited about the possibility of utilizing special console features like the Wii U’s second screen!

I'm kinda pumped for this.

----Original OP Starts Here----So we know the new Zelda game is coming to NX. And that's pretty much it. Maybe Pikmin 4, maybe a couple of Squeenix games. Something from Koei-Tecmo. And now this.

Rise: Race The Future. From the makers of IronFall on 3DS. Coming to pretty much everything (except Vita), including NX. They even ripped Vook's logo mockup for the announcement. It's also coming out Winter 2016 which, yeah sure, of course it's totally coming out Winter 2016. No, really!

You'll probably never play it. But it's the first official third party game announced for NX.

Nintendo Gaming / Predict the Wii U's Holiday Lineup!
« on: April 27, 2016, 08:35:55 AM »
Ready those tumbleweed gifs!

It's simple. We know NX is launching in 2017. We know Zelda UNX is delayed until 2017. So what's Wii U's lineup for fall/holiday 2016? Well, let's make a game out of it!

- I predict Pikmin 4 is the sacrificial lamb taken from the NX launch lineup and placed back in the Wii U hell hole of 2016. I mean, it's already a Wii U game.
- Also, with nothing else to localize, this is finally the year NoA gives us Mother 3, with a special boxed edition featuring a disc with all 3 Earthbound games plus an art book of some kind.

There, I just saved 2016 for Nintendo. Check please?

General Gaming / So what do you do with an Xbox One?
« on: March 05, 2016, 02:20:24 AM »
So in the other Xbox thread I mentioned that Gamestop was closing all its stores in Puerto Rico. In the ensuing firesale the one thing the stores had trouble getting rid of were Xbox One/360 hardware/software. I managed to snag a refurbished Xbox One for less than $150.

Now, this is strictly going to be a third console. It's mostly going to play Rare Replay, Cuphead and Sunset Overdrive. But in the off-chance I want to play more exclusive first party games (the PS4 will the multiplatform system), what do I get? I'm not really interested in Halo, I don't think I want to tackle Ori and the Blind Forest and I'm not even sure I want Forza now that I have Project CARS. I don't think I even want to pay for Xbox Live Gold unless someone can sell me on Games with Gold. Is there anything beside Scalebound to look forward to? Any console-exclusive indies I should look forward to?

I mean, is that not the cutest angry Kirby you've ever seen?

General Gaming / How many games did you play this year?
« on: December 31, 2015, 04:14:39 PM »
So this year I swiped James' idea of keeping a spreadsheet of all the games I played this year (linky if you're interested). Now that the year has ended I can look back and see how much time I spent on games. I got 80 games played in total, and I'm surprised at how many games I finished. I'm definitely heavy on the platform and sports games as well.

How about you guys. How was your gaming year?

24
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/12/microsoft_gets_cute_about_possible_rare_replay_release_on_wii_u

So Microsoft Game Studios' twitter account got too cute with people clamoring for Rare Replay to get a Nintendo release. So much so that they had to issue a retraction that's currently pinned as their top tweet. Now, I know this will never, ever, ever, ever happen but it still got me thinking about what Nintendo could offer in terms of a possible trade. Instead of port begging, let's ask for a trade!(with IP we don't own, but hey, it's an internet forum) What would be fair value?

I'm thinking Nintendo gets together with Platinum and they go to Microsoft and say "hey, here's Bayonetta 2 on your system. You get this exclusive game over PS4. In exchange, you can release Rare Replay with the DKC trilogy, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing and Starfox Adventures. You can even sell it for $50-$60."

I mean, Microsoft has to at least think about it, right? There has to be minimum one shady, closed door meeting if that offer gets made, right? There would be some development issues to get around, but that could be solved with cash consideration being thrown each others' way. Should I go back to my morning coffee and forget this demented idea crossed my mind?

EDIT: My trade specifics:
Microsoft gets: Bayonetta 2 plus the optimised version of Bayonetta 1 (sans Nintendo costumes)
Nintendo gets: Rare Replay Wii U Edition (with DKC trilogy, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing and StarFox Adventures replacing the Microsoft exclusive titles).
