i agree, keeping the next console cheap is a good idea... but with the propagation of HDTV and the move and kinect, I just think the big N is going to have to make a move.

Maybe a Wii 1.5? where there is an upgraded graphics mode on newer games if you have the new system (But all games play on all wii's?)

or they could just make a Pokemon MMO and rule the world. /sigh

i say $189 since it will still need to be less than the Wii. also predict DSi to drop to $129 and the ds lite will go away.

i think the games are going great. the time is killing me though. had to take off part of the day for the US game on friday. been catching the second half of the lunchtime game at, well, lunch, which has been good. i think there have been some surprises. South Korea and Japan certainly came to play, that is for sure. and Ghana!

Why does flash memory cost so much more than HDD? I mean flash memory devices are smaller and more compact than the bigger hard drive.

This is a little off topic, but I can not help but ask. I have a 80 GB HDD and I want to convert it into an external hard drive. On the back of the HDD it says ATA. Supposedly this is the connection for the device. However, the enclosure that I am interested in buying is called SATA. Would my hard drive be compatible with this enclosure?

i had to double check this, just wanted to make sure, but the answer is no. ata is the old format, and while sata is an upgrade to ata, they are not compatible

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sata#Backward_and_forward_compatibility

not just from a compatibility point of view, the cables are different in size and shape.

a quick search of newegg (ata usb) found a few options, some that were even sata and ata compatible (meaning you may want to check to see if yours is too)

off topic, but i hope that helps.

got an email this morning from amazon, apparently all of today's (16 Feb 2010) gold box deals will be for the wii. the first one is a game called "walk it out" so i am not entirely hopeful about this venture...

while i agree with the idea of the numbs, sony did a poor job with the psp. the numb was not very well designed or placed on the device. i know nintendo can do better, but still i'd be concerned.

i'd love touch tech to be the point where the entire bottom part was a touch screen so controls and buttons could be placed on the screen as needed. i relaize there is a tactile loss by not having a physical button for your fingers to touch, but it would make for controls specific to the game.

yes yes and yes to the app store. i should be able to check facebook, twitter, etc. from my dsi. and if we had an app store both amazon  kindle and bn ebook readers could be ported over. (ebook is a txt format and will shape itself to the screen, doesn't need to be 'formatted')

and more importantly, i should be able to get my pikachu with the DSi even if i have left pearl at home.

the new opera is fast, and well made, so it would seem to me there is only a matter of time before that tech is translated to the dsi and wii.

i want the gamecube level graphics. current gen battery life. or better. i want online to be just a given, but don't force 3g subscription on me. especially AT&T. make the damn thing sync its calendar and notes with my computer, or google or yahoo, or something.

and since it will have GC graphics, i want metroid, starfox adventures and mario sunshine to be launch titles.

Nintendo Gaming / Marines: Modern Urban Combat
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:19:34 PM »
Let’s just get one thing out in the open: I pre-ordered this game. I half wonder if I was the only one in the world to do so.

I was on amazon ordering Modern Warfare 2 Mobilized when this game, called Marines, came up. The game, listed as Marines: Assault on Terror, had a box cover that looked like it was modeled after... well Call of Duty Modern Warfare.

I laughed, the game was obviously trying to sneak in under the Modern Warfare 2 radar and get picked up by some unsuspecting parents. Still, i was curious and looked it up and did some reading.

The game is not new. It is a port of an XBox game released in 2005 called Close Combat: First to Fight. The developers met with actual Marines, first it seems to make a training simulator, but then also to make this game.

So I looked up THAT game. Well, Gamespot  gave it a 7.3, IGN gave it an 8.0 overall. Not too shabby for a FPS, I thought. The game was going for $30, and I thought what the hell.  So I ordered it with MW: Mobilized.

That was back in November. The game was supposed to be out the week after Thanksgiving. Then the first week of December. Then the second. The release date changed at least five times before it finally shipped to me. It arrived today, 28 January, 2010.

So that is how I came in to possession of Marines: Modern Urban Combat, Assault on Terror, Close Combat: FIrst to Wii.

(The game is called Marines: Modern Urban Combat, which is what the box cover art said all along, but not the Amazon listing.)

Now on to the review.

Another confession: I really wanted to love this game.

Marines MUC takes place in an alternate reality (history?) Beirut. A rebel faction has started a civil war and we, the USA, are there to try and stop it. The plot is told through mock news reports from INN, the International News Network.

The game is a squad based game. You and three of your Marine friends travel together through each level. You start by clearing streets, then move to buildings and what not. As squad leader you can give commands to your group, but they are pretty basic.

The controls are pretty standard for Wii FPS. There is no jump, but you can kneel and lie prone. Reload has you move the Wii controller down, then back up. Being an FPS this is an awkward motion, as it takes the camera with it.

Remember this game is an XBox port, and it looks like it. The graphics have not been updated, which isn’t bad, but obviously last generation. But that isn’t the problem. The problem is the refresh / redraw rate. There were times as I turned that noticeable parts of the screen were not keeping up.

And load times. I mention this was an XBox port? I haven’t had load times like this in years. It makes you appreciate how Metriod and some other games will work past the loads as much as possible.

The AI of the game is more impressive than the graphics. The bad guys will hide behind things and even wait for you to move before they shoot. It is not a run and gun, which is admittedly my preferred tactic for these sort of situations. Your squad mates are actually useful, rather than being mobile targets you have to keep alive. The formations they will take are very realistic, and although they will kill baddies, I’ve noticed at times their aim is downright pitiful.

Not that I am one to talk.

The Wii added controls are just not as fluid as I am used to. You can adjust both the dead space and the controller sensitivity. I played with both through the time I was playing, but couldn’t find a good medium. Perhaps there is one and I haven’t found it yet. As for now, it is hard to aim with precision with any sort of urgency. Enemies that were fairly close to me could be hard to hit. Reaction time of the controls was slow and seemingly inconsistent. Using the scope helped some, but slowed down the motion even more.

The thing about this game is that I could see that 7.3 - 8.0 game in it as I was playing. There is a good game in this and it deserved more than a speedy port to cash in on Modern Warfare 2. Rather a slower polish, and applying the same attention to details that brought the original to this one would have resulted in a fairly strong title, even with the XBox graphics.

Instead it is a shadow. Playable, yes, but not what it could be. I’d drop this from an 8.0 to a 5. The game did not start off life as shovelware, it didn’t need to be reincarnated as it.

Dark Krystal Chronicles.

She can play the role of Nintendo's bad girl, much like Zero Suit Samus, but with zero suit, as in no suit, and she uses her feminine ways to seduce the men(and women ;)) to get what she wants.

Dark Krytal Chronicles should be an M-rated GTA style sandbox game set in the Star Fox universe.

day one purchase.

and unfortunately for sony the iPhone is a bigger competitor to the PSP than the DS. Why have a PMP that can play games when i can have a PMP that can play games AND make phone calls.

this is a good one to read in retro-spect. nintendo came out strong (i cringe at 'on top' because that implies they 'won') and is again in a good position.

but let's not forget, nintendo was always a leader. even in those down times EVERYONE was looking and thinking "ok, what is nintendo going to do next?" their influence has never diminished.

nintendo partners with tivo, makes Wii Tivo, HD, DVR, and just for kicks plays blue rays. The commercial will be an animation of the Wii Tivo recording a PS3 commercial "for posterity"

The DSiPhone, uses android, two touch screens, open to any carrier, lets you play real games and make calls, has skype video. will come with the Pokemon MMO preinstalled. home screen is reggie eating an apple.

Wii Resort is launched, nintendo buys and island that is a theme park that has all the parts of Wii Sports and Resort and Play and adds in Pilot Wings, and life sized mario levels. This is the only place in the world where you will be able to play Kid Icarus.

Ends with Miyamoto Saying "All your base!" and the croud responding "ARE BELONG TO YOU!"

Maybe the DS2 will also be the Wii2...

this and so much this.

why not? sure it may be awkward having to carry a wii-mote around with you on the bus... but having one system to do both could be an interesting idea.

tho i may drive developers crazy. well, more crazy than they are.

old thread ressurection time!!!

so i had an idea about animal crossing. no idea if it would work...

here it is: since i now have two DS's I could put animal crossing in one, turn it on, open my gates and make it a server. if i got friend codes from people, you guys could come and go as you want (if memory serves)

my town would be like your home away from home.

this is assuming that the ds doesn't cut off after a certain amount of time with no interaction...

thoughts? anyone out there still play?

mine is on pre-order from amazon. thankfully the release date will let me spend time with my family then play FF. ;-)

and there is a reason i stopped reading game informer years ago. in fact i've stopped most reviews in general. i am starting to think that people who review games for a living don't actually like video games (looking at you IGN)

present company exclude. err. mostly.

btw, the nintendo power write up on this was great. final fantasy, not my distaste for ign, that is.

23
ju-on, silent hill were both pre-orders for me. personally i dug HODoverkill, beaten it twice. i keep looking at deadspace like it will suddenly become a real FPS...

also been playing more conduit lately. sad to say my metroid prime trilogy case hasn't even been opened yet...

cursed mountain is a great game, but NSMBWii has taken it off the rotation. and at least until exams are over and i return to just a normal working guy time is limited.

i mean, there was just a new content patch for wow.

oh and i buy crappy games so you don't have to, but i don't admit to them in public.

oh! i didn't see that, just read it.

agreed about the tank level, though i liked the bot levels, they were interesting. all about timing.

online is getting better, usually 4-5 people per try. remember this didn't sell well at all the first week (even not considering the history its older brother made) so there weren't many out there.

funny, i usually ditched at least one of my starting guns as soon as the level started. that way i knew i had a steady stream of bullets coming throughout the level.

i got past that sniper level, only through persistence, and getting a chance layout where all were easy to hit.

agreed about the iron sights thing. personally i am annoyed that COD makes it such a difference to use them. most of the time i just shoot more rather than use the sights.
