TalkBack / Re: WWE 2K18 (Switch) Review

After listening to the segment about wrestling games on Nintendo systems during the telethon, I'm in the mood for a wrestling game.  This obviously isn't it.  I think I'm going to have to connect the old N64...the question is, which of those fine games to play?  I'm pretty sure I have all 4 AKI games.

I watched about 5 minutes of this before losing interest, just not my thing.  However, the tweets from one James Jones during the Nintendo World Championships were quite entertaining.

I don't know what everyone's complaining about, there was a stretch on Tuesday afternoon when Target had pre-orders available for 4 minutes.  Four whole minutes.  And three other times when the SNES classic was available for 10 whole seconds.  If you didn't get one, I don't know how you can possibly complain... ;)

Seriously, it is a little absurd but hopefully Nintendo actually will produce enough systems to almost meet demand.  The forums and twitter account from cheapassgamer.com are both good for tracking availability for stuff like this (and is where the availability info from the Target pre-orders came from).

4
To be fair to Nintendo, could they really give a solid date that preorders will be available?  They could give a date that they're going to tell retailers how many units they will provide on launch day, but it's still up to the retailers to decide when to actually start taking preorders.  I don't follow that closely, but aren't preorders for new consoles typically staggered between retailers, not all at once?

Hopefully "significant" number means enough that people really trying to get one can without too much hassle...but I'm not holding my breath.

I wonder if any retailers will use the high demand and anticipated (real or not) short supply to their advantage, beyond trying to sell ridiculous bundles.  It seems like a smart move to me to make preorders a Prime Exclusive on Amazon or for Target to have a preorder only for Red Card holders...and to announce this in advance.  It seems like smart business sense and a way to keep loyal customers happy to do something like that with items highly in demand.

Seems to me that he's emphasizing the variety of games part.  That can only mean one thing:

Switch Music

Out of curiosity I looked at the list of Acclaim games released on Nintendo systems and there's one that I would like to see an updated version of: Shadow Man.  Not sure that qualifies as a "classic" but it's by far my favorite Acclaim game.

Hey Enner am I reading these right, did Japan sell through +300k Switches with 'only' just over half of those customers also getting Zelda? Or are these sales to retailers?

I guess some people got theirs with 1-2 Switch, Dragon Quest Heroes, Bomberman or even Puyo Puyo Tetris instead? Would expect many people to get several games though, so did some just get Switches without games on them? Seems odd to me.

Wonder how these sales look in the West too, I've been seeing commercials for that Horizon Zero Dawn game e v e r y w h e r e so if they're this close in Japan, could that game top Zelda in its first week?
I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that Media Create numbers do not include eShop sales numbers so would explain the number of games sold being lower than you might expect.

The cartridges do, in fact, taste terrible.  But not unfamiliar. . ?

It takes a bit to get used to, but...

I got way too much amusement out of reading these sentences one after the other...

Shipwreck from Cheap Ass Gamer (who I believe is an engineer) posted a series of tweets earlier today pointing out that parts of the tablet that connect with the joycons are metal but that the parts on the joycon that connect to the tablet are plastic and that in his opinion, there's a good chance that there may be serious design flaws that result in a very high failure rate of joycons.  Obviously based only on images and speculation, but he generally seems to know his stuff.  The more I read, the more I'm happy that I'm fine waiting for a revision to come out, more than enough of a backlog and too little time for gaming to jump in at launch.  Hopefully he's wrong and hopefully Nintendo figures out a software fix for the other joycon issue, but to me the issues announced so far are more than enough reason not to rush out and buy the system.

I wonder if cartridges are like a fine wine and get better with time.  I'll bet some of those N64 cartridges I've got in my closet are delicious...

1. The theme song video with real ducks is awesome.

2. Ducktales Remastered is a blast.  The gameplay holds up well and the story is classic Ducktales.  The cutscenes do get a little annoying if you die over and over but other than that I'd consider it one of my favorite games on Wii U.  It's been on sale a bunch of times, not sure if we'll see more sales with the Wii U on its way out, but even at full price it's well worth it.

My prediction is that they announce NintenDogsCats Switch in which your pet is a dog when you're taking the game on the go but magically switches into a cat when the Switch is docked.

After playing it for several hours on PC, I think the perfect home for Stardew Valley would be the Switch.
When they cancelled the WiiU version a could months back, they announced plans to release the game for Switch so it should be coming out this year.

Is it just me or have most of the games in the January Digital Deals been on sale previously for lower prices?  Of the ones I own, I'm pretty sure I paid less than the current prices.

And rumble. Have we ever had a handheld that rumbles?
Nintendo released a rumble pack accessory for the DS that plugged into the GBA slot, though I remember hearing that it did more noise making than it did rumbling.

I was disappointed to see that Stardew Valley was cancelled for the Wii U.  I think it would have sold well given that there's nothing else coming out on Wii U, it's had such good reviews, and the Harvest Moon games always seemed to do fairly well on Nintendo consoles but I'm sure they did the math and figured that it wouldn't be worth it.

I've decided not to wait longer to get Stardew Valley so I'm going to pick it up for PC.  Steam has it on sale for $9.99 right now, so why not...

That's unfortunate, I was looking forward to this game.  I wish they had announced this a few days earlier, I would have picked up the PC version when it was on sale over the weekend.

Whelp, stock ran out in less than a minute on Amazon...
And from the 2 seconds I saw it available, it looked like they were charging $5 for shipping with no option for Prime shipping...don't think I've ever noticed them do that for an item sold directly from Amazon.

TalkBack / Re: NES Classic Edition Review

Not a good justification, but I think the reasoning probably goes like this:
(1) controllers can double as Wii classic controllers, which don't need long cords; personally, I like the fact they aren't super long because it makes the controllers more useful in different contexts
(2) longer replacement HDMI cables are something Nintendo can leave for customers to purchase; what's in the box is workable and anyone who wants more can easily find a replacement

Fair enough, but two feet is just silly, that's too short to even have the system sitting on the coffee table and sit back comfortably on the couch, at least the way my living room is set up.

And even when you were a little kid you were forced to sit close to the TV.

When you're a little kid, you don't care about things like that.  Sitting on the floor two feet in front of the TV is something you do by choice, even when your parents tell you not to.  As an adult in your 30s, which is the demographic they're going after, that's not so appealing anymore.

I realize it's not that big of a deal but it's still a bad decision in my opinion and all of the reviews and podcasts discussing it seem to agree.

Why does Nintendo always do this?  It seems like so many times they've come up with something really good but with one really dumb, obvious flaw.  I want one of these but to have to deal with something that is almost unusable with what's in the box is crazy.

Who would have guessed a few years ago that not only would Nintendo finally make a game where you can make your own Mario levels, but that it would get outsold by almost a million copies by a Nintendo made third-person shooter...

If you're going to make a farming sim, the world's largest rodent is the obvious choice for the pre-order bonus.

Great. Another excellent looking game that I was really excited about that will be too difficult for me to enjoy.
What is it with indies? There so enamoured with being so "#edgy" and "#hardcoreAF"  ::)
Agree completely.  This game sounds really interesting but I'm not sure I have the time/patience to deal with insane difficulty for no good reason.

I don't know. To me it makes more sense to unveil it before we get to the week before Black Friday madness.
True, it probably doesn't make sense, but it's Nintendo so that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Nintendo Direct on November 17, 2016.  They'll begin by bragging about how the NES Classic Edition has sold a gazillion units already, then blow out the details of the NX, and wrap things up with another tease of Zelda.

I'm curious how much of the 9 game attach rate is first party games?  And it's a good question how virtual console/WiiWare/eShop figure into to these numbers.  And do they include pack in games in their software sales or not?  That would skew the numbers between consoles.  I also wonder how the attach rates of PS3/XB360 compare.
