TalkBack / Re: I Am Setsuna Coming to Switch at Launch
« on: January 24, 2017, 01:16:58 PM »
Its funny, at first I was thinking this launch lineup is week but the closer we get to launch, the more games I keep adding to my purchase list.  This lineup is slowly getting out of hand lol.

Never even occurred to me to think of 1 2 Switch.  That would be perfect in VR too.  It would take away from the social aspect of the experience since your not looking at the other person anymore but I see other potential.  Imagine holding a snake in your hand in the VR world. and have the joycon simulate the snake moving through your hands, the vibration simulating the scales rubbing on your hands as it moves by.

True, I don't see VR becoming the standard for gaming or gaming becoming the standard use of VR but given Nintendo seems to be in the business of giving people options, I can see them adding in VR as the next evolution of the Switch.  There really is nothing more they can do with future iterations outside of upping specs and slimming it down.  By then, adding a headset attachment as an option for customers to use with their Switch should be good enough for some to fool around in VR.  I don't know the costs and how it'll break down so I could be overstepping those boundaries but it seems possible.  The Switch's current configuration is perfect for entry level VR, it just needs the proper resolution display.

Nintendo Gaming / The Nintendo Switch Roadmap....Switch VR?
« on: January 17, 2017, 04:10:57 PM »
Hey, I'm not sure how much legs this thread will have but I figured it should be a decent discussion. Since the Switch disrobing this past Friday, I've been taking all the information in and a vision has started coming into place. I think Nintendo may be gearing itself up for an eventual push back into the VR scene.  Let me explain.

1.  Recently, there was a Nintendo patent that came out detailing every inch of the Switch.  In this patent doc, there was mention of a mounted VR headset that can be used for the Switch.

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=20160361640.PGNR.&OS=DN/20160361640&RS=DN/20160361640

Now, the current Switch only has a 720p screen on it which I hear is no bueno for VR.  in a good 6-7 years, I believe Nintendo, and technology, will be a better position to bring out a Switch2 which can have a more robust cpu/gpu and a 1080p screen.  Nintendo seems to like to adopt things once they've been on the market for a while and has matured.  VR should be a little more common place by then.  Providing a packed in head mounted vr cradle for the future Switch should be doable as an added bonus to regular home console/portable play

2.  The Switch already comes built with VR in mind.  The joycons are nice small separate wireless remotes that have motion sensing capabilities and a new HD rumble haptic feedback.  These features will lend themselves very well to a VR experience.

3.  Nintendo's art style lends itself well to VR.  They never really aim for photo realism.  They will not need bleeding edge technology to run the games they develop in VR.  Their current franchises lend themselves wonderfully to VR.
  • ARMS- perfect for VR
  • Splatoon- I'd love to see how it'll work but it may be too fast for proper VR, I can see people really getting sick off this game lol
  • Mario Kart- Perfect for VR
  • Metroid-.... come on brah... you know you want it lol
  • Punchout- same as ARMS
  • F-Zero...... by this point you know where I'm going with this
4.  Nintendo's history-  Nintendo has already dabbled in VR years back with the Vboy to no success.  They may have been ahead of the times then.  Since then they have been playing around and laying some groundwork on forms of motion play.  All this experience could lead them to making another push to VR.  Looking at the Switch, I can already see it doing basic VR as is if it just had a higher resolution screen on it.

In closing, I know the Switch isn't even out yet but looking at their present and past, one can't put it past Nintendo to try and get back in on the VR scene.  If its popularity inscreases, Nintendo is in a key position to provide probably the lowest entry into VR with their next Switch console.  Time will tell though as the competition in VR begins to release their revised models in the years to come.  Things could die down and go the way of 3d tvs or things can really pick up and usher in a new genre/aspect of gaming.

Hey all, def been a while lol.  I'm out of hibernation.

As for this specific topic, it has crossed my mind before.  Bringing the Switch to market is basically bringing the handheld market into console current gen standards.  I've always feared that doing so will mark the death of the portable game experience (smaller scaled games, those build for bite sized consumption, etc).  Looking at the initial launch lineup though has put me somewhat at ease.

Nintendo seems to be fine setting different price points for some games depending on their scope.  This leads me to believe we may still see a market for traditional handheld titles.  Also, given the Switch is as powerful as a home console, I believe Indie titles will carry the torch further and completely dominate the traditional handheld market.  Indie games seem to be smaller in scale for the most part and always priced lower than your typical console release.  They should fall in line quite nicely within that handheld niche.

All in all I am extremely excited for the switch and all it is bringing.  I may create a thread a little later on what I think Nintendo's roadmap will be for the Switch going forward.  They have so many ways they can take this but I digress, that conversation will be left for another thread lol.

I have it a run through and thought it was enjoyable.  Still not sure I'd purchase the full game yet as my time is limited and I'm already swamped with monster hunter 4, the usual backlog plus upcoming releases.

I did find it very surprising how good the nub performed for a shooter. I initially thought it'll be a hot mess but I actually managed well with it.  The mechanics are solid but the game is so generic that its keeping me from going all in.  It is basically Gears of War in your pocket though lol.

7
Thanks for the info.  I did go to the gathering hall and then noticed the hr1 quests.  One thing I noticed though when doing those quests is that I get 4 of most supplies at the start.  Am I to assume these quests are designed to be tackled in groups?  So far I've been soloing most of the HR1 quests but am I eventually going to get to a point where that wont be possible?

8
Just a quick question, I see people mention hr1 and so on, what does that mean?  Is it hunter rank? and are you referring to the current star level of your quests?

9
Are they monsters from the old game? You can get some of those parts from the Wyporium Trader. Also, make sure you go on those random expeditions. That seems to unlock new monsters over time.

Sorry for the late response.  I'm not sure what monsters they are, I haven't looked them up yet and I've never really played the old ones.  I've been using the trader to get some goods and have opened up some more monsters through expeditions but I tend to go at a snails pace with my gaming as of late lol.

I'm in the second town right now and just defeated that rock dragon.  One thing I wonder though is how would anyone defeat that monster without the use of the insect glaive?  It wasn't too bad for me as I was just able to constantly hop to it and strike its weak spot but without the hop capability, I can't imagine how I would've attacked it as all my other strikes were bouncing off of it.

10
Thanks for the info, will have to get the app.  I'm starting to think Capcom did that on purpose to facilitate communication with other games online and when out playing with others lol.

Anyways, I'm really enjoying using the insect glaive at the moment but one thing that is driving me nuts is that there are little to no upgrades for it compared to the other weapons.  I've been able to improve the insect 2 levels so far and the weapon 2 levels but when I go to the smith, I see he has 5 or so new items for each weapon yet he still is only carrying the first insect glaive that I started out with.  I bit and looked at the weapon tree for the insect glaive and it seems a lot smaller compared to the others.  I'm starting to wondering if I should switch over to long sword so that I can have some variety and be able to increase my attack rating.  Right now I'm stuck with a base attack of 300 something because I currently have no other options yet to create a new insect glaive or upgrade the one I have.  (the current upgrade is asking for parts of monsters I haven't even discovered yet it seems)

11
Yeah, looks like those phone apps will have to be the way to go.  Do I need all 3 as they all do something different or are they all just competing apps that all serve the same purpose?

12
Hey, decided to pop back in after my initial time with the demo.  I decided to get the game on release with the new 3ds and I have to say, its really starting to click with me.  I'm still in the first village and just finally managed to get all the necessary ingredients to make a full Jaggi armor set. (had to fight the Great Jaggi god knows how many times though lol.  It got to the point that a couple of times, I took him out within the first zone I found him in.  I decided to use the Insect Glaive which is so much fun to use.  I haven't gotten the hang of using the bug yet to buff my character.  I've pulled it off a few times but I'm not fluent with it yet though.  I did get the hang of the leaping ability that the insect glaive gives you and I've become a mounting machine with it.  I can't imagine having to mount the monster any other way.  Its become routine to just dodge right/left then then time the hop just right to land a blow on the monster's neck.

My progress has been extremely slow and steady but I do have on question.  Is there an in game reference or guide for tracking down items or do I have to rely on going online for assistance in locating which monster drops what loot.  I'm looking right now for a specific bone to upgrade my glaive but have no idea where to find it.  I'd hate to have to constantly check on line for the location of items.  Would be nice if there is a character or book you can buy in game that'll tell you where you can find items.

Thanks for the info, yeah, the touch screen control of the camera has been manageable and I just realized the L button function last night before bed.  The L button seems to do the trick too.  It'll be enough for the time being until the n3ds comes out.

One thing I did notice is that this game is killing my fingers lol.  I have fairly big (long fingers lol) hand and its all cramped up playing on the og 3ds.  my thumb was in pain after all the moving around I was doing.  I'm sure the XL will release some of those issues though.

I've gone through some of the faster weapons so far such as the SnS, double blades, and long sword.  so far, really digging the long sword.  All have been good though.  Going to make moves on the other weapons tonight.  I've only been playing on beginner so far and only fighting the easy hunt and its been a cake walk.  Once I set myself on a weapon or 2 of choice. I'll try the other hunts and bump up the difficulty.

Thinking of going with a blade as my primary and a ranged weapon as a secondary.  Not sure how wise that setup would be in this game though.  I know you need some bladed weapon so you can cut body parts but I was originally thinking of going ranged primarily.

14
Thanks for the offer stratos, and gk, good videos, the more info the better.  I'll prob run solo for a week and get a feel for all the weapons and then try my hand at some online hunts lol.

One question, I don't have a cpp, is not having a second analog stick for camera control going to make the game that much more difficult?  I'm looking to pick up the n3ds so I'll have the nub at that time but don't want to pick up a cpp for my current ds when its eventually going to get sold or given away plus it'll just be for this demo lol.

On the bright side, if I get the hang of the game without the use of a second analog stick then it'll make the game proper feel that much better when I get it with the n3ds.

15
Your a life saver Mop It Up lol.  I'm about to crash right now but now I know what I got planned for tomorrow night to help get through this cold winter.  Thanks again man, I can sleep easy now :)

16
I know I'm a bit late to the party (and been mia from the board for quite a while lol, I still lurk teehee ) does anyone still have any of those demo codes for unlimited demo play?  I want to give this series another shot after I half assed my way around 3.  I want to experience all the buzz everyone is talking about with this series.

Wow, I came in just for sh*ts and giggles since there were not much Nintendo news going on today and I'm amazed at some of these eshop games.  Specifically the WiiU eshop releases, the bulk of the ones I saw were all very unique beautiful games.  Also the music is stellar, I'm always surprised at what these indie studios pull off.  They can put some of the big publishers to shame.

That sucks.  Didn't one of the old Mario Karts have that same problem?   I remember seeing videos of people hopping and sliding their way through the whole race.  Was it the Wii Mario Kart?

Thanks, I tend to lurk for most of the year until e3 rolls around then I get caught up in all the frenzy, enough so to pop back on and start posting again lol.  Time is so limited now a days, been working on a serious backlog lol.

Anyways, I'm currently working my way through the 100cc class.  Once I polish off the 150s and get some more gear unlocked, I'll be online looking for some races.  I see Blacknmild just recently got the game also so I'm not the only late adapter lol.

Thanks for the info but yeah, that track would've been amazing with the new gravity aspect of this game.  I can imagine if they tilted some of the pinball areas upwards so your racing up the wall while the pinballs came crashing down or bounced around.  Would've been epic.

On a side note, but playing the Rainbow tracks in this game just makes me wish Nintendo would come out with a new F-zero already.  Looking at some of the things they have done with gravity in this game, I can only imagine how a new F-zero would be.  smh.  Come on E3, make my wishes come true.

I'm back from the grave.  Best believe you'll find me lurking in the NWR kart room lol.  Just got the game today so I need a little bit of time to stuck up on the upgrades.  Loving the tracks but F me that they didn't bring back the pinball stage from Mario Kart 7 I believe.  I loved that stage :/.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Would JRPGs Help Save the Wii U?

No, but since Nintendo was in the mood to bring Beyonetta 2 to the WiiU, I wish they would just go ahead and fund the development of Suikoden 6 and Skies of Arcadia 2.  Let the WiiU become the system of cult followers lol.

An even better quote is

Quote
Just another thing, Nintendo needs to sell 759.319.667 games per year at 5 $ in the App Store to account for the same hardware revenue. And 30 % goes to Apple. (Comparing last fiscal year)

imagine how much they would have to sell if they included software revenue in that calculation.  It almost makes you wonder if those in the businesses who say Nintendo should go 3rd party and release mobile games have even done any research to begin with.

I'm not too familiar with how Minecraft works as I've never been too crazy over the look of the game to warrant a more in depth look.  My assumption of it is that it lets you create your own worlds or games, something to that affect.  A release on the WiiU would be perfect simply because the gamepad lends itself nicely to these menu driven games.  My only concern would be that it seems to be releasing around the same time roughly as Project Spark (though only releasing for Xbone and Windows 8 ).  From what I've seen of Project Spark, it makes Minecraft look ancient in comparison.  Now this could be my ignorance on what Minecraft really is but I'm currently a lot more excited for what Project Spark has the potential to provide in the coming future.

As this will be the only game of its type on a Nintendo platform, it is still a solid release though.  Quality releases from 3rd parties are few and far between for Nintendo so you take as many as you can.

Does anyone know how many holes this offers? I'm trying to find more detail on this yet all I can find is the new features with the Gamepad and the fact it offers online play now.
