If they aren't going to make a new game they could at least farm out a HD remake/remaster. If only to fill the release schedule. I know it didn't do well originally but like so many games from Nintendo I doubt it was due to the quality but simply because it was never pushed by them and just pushed out of the door at some point. That happen to a number of  Wii games from them and I don't doubt that happen with games before that. If anything it might do better now with it being easier to show off the game in advance compared to it's originally release.

I say this with bias as I never played Eternal Darkness. I was to busy with my PS2 and getting into MMOs at the time it came out.  So I'd love to play it now.

52
I really thought about getting a PS4. I had it pre-ordered twice on Amazon at separate times but ultimately realized there was nothing I really wanted to play at launch. Well maybe one game but not enough that I was willing to drop over $400 to play it. I don't want to repeat the mistake I did with the Wii U. I should have wait with that.

I'm still torn on which one to get in the end. I'm looking at exclusives going forward as I've come to realize multiplatforms really aren't doing it for me. So my purchases of those are likely to be extremely limited going forward.

PS4: Deep Down, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Drive Club, The Order, and possibly Infamous
XB1: Titan Fall, Halo, Project Spark
Multiplatform: Destiny

That's what I'm looking forward to but I don't even know if they'll hold up in the end. They might not.

53
Glad they cut the price. Seriously it was the smart thing to do. Otherwise they would have simply alienated the customer base I think. The lack of multiplayer is bad enough but to be charged the same price for less content that isn't going to be added is crazy and downright insulting.

54
StarTropics would be first on my list.

Possible. I think Nintendo would be crazy not to try to buy it or at least buy into co-ownership if Sega was up for it. Nintendo needs more IPs for the core audience. They'd never make something like this on their own but it's the type of game they need in their stable as it's looking like they'll never get acceptable third party support for their home consoles.

Nintendo needs to make this a success though. It's completely on them as the publisher to build hype for the game. To market the game. To sell people on the game. There are no guaranteed sales here. The primary audience for this game is on the PS3 and 360. The have to sell it to those that never played the series. They have to convince those that still haven't bought a Wii U but played the first game to buy the system for the game if they don't already have one. They have to work for every sale. Same with Wonderful 101.

Here's the thing. I don't know if this current Nintendo can do that. I think they're so used getting by on the power and popularity of their brands they don't know how to get people interested in something new without getting lucky and having something so straight forward (Wii series  for example)  that it sells itself. The marketing for a lot of Wii games was horrible. The marketing, such as it was, for the Wii U was horrible.

Last time I checked Sega 100% owned the Bayonetta IP. Which is why their logo is on Bayonetta 2. So it wouldn't be up to Platinum Games to shop it around. Naturally you'd want PG making any sequel but it's not up to them. Which is why Bayonetta 2 wasn't going to be made because Sega didn't want to or simply couldn't fund it's development.

I hope it will be. It can be I think however Nintendo would need to seriously push it. However they won't. They refuse to even push and advertise their own software.  Nintendo could make it a success if they gave a damn but they won't. They'll put it out to die. The same thing will happen with Wonderful 101.  I do not believe at all that it will get any advertising.

It's situation where I think people will seriously question why Nintendo even bothered to fund the games. This  is how they acted with their own Wii games. I see no reason to think they'll act any different. Games that did well, did well in inspite of them I feel not because they pushed them.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:20:10 PM »
Nintendo approaching them about putting their game on Wii U is encouraging.

True. It was good to see they were proactive in that regard.

Nintendo's handling of the Wii U has put me on a roller coaster ride. To the point that I actually put down money for a PS4 yesterday. Though I canceled it and went for a refund today. Ugh. I would feel better if they could actually just come out and state 100% clearly why anyone should buy a Wii U. Put it into words that make even the biggest critic say "okay that clear and straight to the point". That they can't seem to do that I think is at the core of my concern. The "need to see it for yourself" or "need to play the games" simply isn't cutting it and won't cause the narrative to change.

60
In the end I feel the blame is on Nintendo. They set the direction and general tone for the system. They're the ones that launched the system without a clear message. That didn't listen to the concerns regarding the naming of the system. Didn't have the games ready in a timely fashion after having how many years to prepare having seen the troubles others went through!?

However I think a  big issue is that Nintendo simply isn't cultivating a large enough audience that will play third party games. The action games, shooters, etc. Just look at their holiday offerings. Two platformers that slant either to the 2D or are outright 2D. That might sell hardware but it's going to be to people that then turn around and buy the next Call of Duty. Or show Activision that there might be a market in large enough numbers for a Wii U version of Destiny.

Iwata can say all he wants that they are working to build momentum for the Wii U. However the announcement of Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze sends a very specific message and it's not a message that is going to be attractive to third parties when they look at what type of audience Nintendo is trying to build. This is on Nintendo because they don't put out their smaller brand titles anymore. Where is Wave Race and F-Zero? Where is 1080? Why was the Excite series and Battalion Wars series handled the way they were? Whey did they not follow up with another Metroid Prime when it was clear FPS were going to be the genre of the generation after Metroid Prime 3? Where is Star Fox?

These are the game series they have that could have helped cultivate an audience that would have been open to buying third party titles in larger numbers. They did either nothing with them since the GameCube or they just tossed them out there on the Wii in such a way you have to question why they even bothered. I'm sure third parties are seeing this as well. They might not have brought in the money Wii Fit would have but you have to keep your customer base happy and maintained as to not make them ripe for the picking by other companies. I don't think they ever gave any thought to this. Unless they felt it wasn't needed and they really thought all the people they sold to would stick with them so they could afford to toss aside long time customers.

This is why I can't take what Iwata is saying seriously. Why I don't think things will change around for the better with the Wii U when it comes to games I want to play and experiences I want to have.

Swap out DK or Mario (any) for one of the missing franchises and I think we be having a different conversation.

It's just one change but I agree. It would not only mean variety in the holiday line up but it would send a different message I feel about what they're gong to focus on and what different paths they're going to take to turn things around. Doubling down on platformers, as fun as they might be, for me doesn't show they're serious about trying to turn things around and attract more people to the machine. Seeing platformers do well, if they do well, isn't going to make third parties change their stances. That's not going to show them there is a market for their games.

NSMBU didn't sell the system.  DKCR isn't going to sell it either. Both series are games that do insanely well when there is an install base. They don't create that install base. 3D World is a question mark at the moment. However watching videos of Galaxy and playing it again and seeing video of 3D World and playing 3D Land again I don't get a "must play" vibe at all.

I've felt for a while that games like Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy might not do massive numbers in the long run but those are the types of games that sells systems to the more core audience early on. Early adopters. Games like DKCR and NSMB take advantage of the install base those games help create. This is why people were asking for a 3D Mario ala 64 at launch and not just a Mario game.  Why NSMBU failed to sell the system the way they hoped it would after seeing the numbers NSMBWii did. Those 2D games didn't sell the Wii  to the masses, Wii Sports and the rest of the Wii series did and that's still nowhere to be seen. Wii Fit U is worthless I feel without a Wii Sports U paving the way for it.

I was always afraid that Nintendo would interpret the wrong things from their success with the Wii and the various games and it looks like they have.

This is a bit rantish. Sorry ahead of time about that.

I'm torn after this year. Nintendo announced games that I'm sure will be great. I have no doubt of their quality. The games I really want to play (Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, X) though don't come until 2014!!!  Now I'm in a worse place when it comes to having faith in Nintendo's ability to turn things around for the Wii U. As a result I'm even more frustrated and partly upset that my investment in the system so early is not going to pay off and if it does it won't be until years from now.

More then ever if I had a chance to do it over again I would not have gotten the system at launch. Even if I've enjoyed it already. I would have waited and if I had there is a very real chance I would be choosing to get a PS4 this holiday instead.  For as much as I love Nintendo games I'm not really seeing the game experiences I want to play and of the little there is that is being offered it's not being delivered timely enough. The inaction on their part in a timely manner is just making it worse.

Seeing that their big holiday offerings were two platformers, similar to two games I already played very recently, honestly made me livid for a short period of time before I calmed down.

Perhaps it's just me. Perhaps I'm expecting to much from Nintendo. Expecting them to be something they aren't and to offer something they'll never offer.

This E3 has caused a roller coaster effect with my feelings toward Nintendo. One moment I can be happy with what they announced and another I'm cursing them for getting me to spend the money I did and making my investment possibly worthless.

63
Definite buys.

Pikmin 3
Sonic Lost World - This looks more interesting to me then Mario 3D World and DK
Wonderful 101

Possible buys depending on more information being released.

Wind Waker HD
Splinter Cell
Batman: Arkham Origins
Watch_Dogs
Assassin's Creed 4

The last two really depend on how they look on the Wii U verse the other systems as I plan on getting a PS4 if not at launch sometime in the early part of 2014. So I can wait to get them on that system.

I have to say as a side note. No matter how great Mario Kart 8 looks. If the damn blue shells behave like they always have I refuse to buy it. I stopped playing Mario Kart 7 because of that BS. I don't want to be punished constantly for racing well. So I'm not even bothering to look forward to that game at the moment until they make what is going on with the blue shells clear.

64
**** YOU RETRO

This is how I feel. I understand why they might have gone in this direction. The engine is there, they have the assets, and it will likely sell more. The game likely will be great. However doesn't mean I'm not still disappointed. This was THE disappointment for me out of the Nintendo Direct. It's the thing that had me in sort of a funk for a while this morning but I'm over it now. I've just accepted that I have to buy a PS4 at some point or just invest in a bigger upgrade for my PC.

I do hope though that this stops Nintendo fans from putting Retro on the damn pedestal they've put them on. That this stops them from looking at Retro as some damn savior to western Nintendo fans that want to be catered to. Accept that Nintendo won't.

Buy a second console or invest in a PC for experiences that Nintendo refuses to provide. You'll be better off and a lot less frustrated.

I hope today's Nintendo Direct doesn't disappoint. I don't expect announcements for games that were shown for Xbox One and the PS4. :( However I do hope there are alternative experiences to be had by either Nintendo or those they're partnered with. That's the only way I think the voids will be filled. However I'm keeping my expectations extremely low. Actually they're almost not existent when it comes to having these voids filled.

I'm looking forward to the game. Especially since I can tailor the time of the world to fit my schedule.  That's always been the biggest issue with me with the game. Sure I could always change the time of the system but I always lost interest before I got to that point because I couldn't play it like it was meant to be played. It being on a hand held that I always take with me and being digital are huge pluses as well.

Cross posting from another forum.

Nintendo won't be limited to just giving each game a short 5 to 10 minute showing. Which is what they would be doing in a stage presentation with some clips being released later if we're lucky. Some games don't even make it to the presentation and are only talked about afterward. Wonderful 101 for example. This way each game can possibly be given the attention it deserves in a long Nintendo Direct (that is carefully put together)  or several mini-directs devoted to each game or a group of games during the entire E3 period.

Imagine a mini-direct 20 minutes long just on the new 3D Mario game. Or Mario Kart. Or Wind Waker. Or Monolith Soft's game. On Bayonetta 2. Whatever third party games there are as well. Include in that interviews. They do this already with games like Animal Crossing for example.

69
If that was the case, then they wouldn't bother covering the Nintendo stuff at all. The fact that you think the main gaming sites won't cover this is absolutely absurd. It's their JOB. Nintendo will get all the coverage they need.

We're not talking gaming sites. We're talking mainstream outlets outside the gaming industry (CNN, USA Today, etc.)

EDIT: At least I think that's who we're talking about...

They'll cover Nintendo as well because they will be invited to the events they do hold. They will be there. These events will be tailored to them as well.

Nintendo will still be at E3. Their booth will still likely be the same size as it's always been.  However there will be closed events for press and retailers, tailored to them most likely.  Also likely Nintendo Directs and several of them as well. We all know how great they can be and the ones likely to be broadcast during E3 week are likely to be big.

That's a possibility of a week of constant coverage and announcements and not just a single 1 hour presentation that may or may not go well live on stage.

broodwars you need to calm down.

Hoping to get this when it comes out but it will be my first SMT game. Not really sure what I'm getting myself into. I do hope the story is good as people have claimed. Wish it was getting a graphical overhaul but hopefully the other additions make it worth the price in the end.

Anyone else planning on getting it? Or have you stuck or are getting Etrian Odyssey 4 instead?

71
Wait, why didn't you get the Target buy 2 get 1 deal?
Good deal. Sadly money already spoken for with Monster Hunter and Lego City Undercover. Sale will be over when I can make another purchase. Oh well.

Wait, why didn't you get the Target buy 2 get 1 deal?

Got better deals for the games at other stores due of credits and coupons/promos. To not use them would mean I'd be paying significantly more out of my pocket then I am now. I'm getting one less game but the less I have to spend the better overall. I've been trying to cut down how much I've been spending on games anyway.

Had the game launched at $30 as the official price and it had been that price from the start I would have gotten it. Like I said before I'd had been willing to put off getting Lego City  in favor of it. This sale comes to late.

« on: March 19, 2013, 01:37:26 PM »
I never asked for this.

Sorry I had to say it.  ;D

Still this is a bad decision by Square Enix. I love the game but $50 after being two years removed from the official release. When the official price for the game is $19.99 and is often on sale for less then that and has been for the past year. At the max this should be the same price as the others and whatever the DLC expansion costed added in. Hell less if the boss fights weren't fixed or better yet just removed. Then again I'm bias on the boss fights as my annoyance with them is what is stopping me from replaying the game or actually going past the first boss fight upon my replay. I don't include the tank like robots as those actually fit the game.

Wii U owners aren't animals publishers can toss a bone and hope Wii U owners get satisfied. This isn't about even testing the waters either because this will be sent to die when it finally does come out without any acknowledgement outside of a line in a press release.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 328: Edufication
« on: March 06, 2013, 03:53:30 PM »
Good episode so far. Still listening as I drive to and from work. However about the DLC issue in the Black Ops 2 had close to yelling at my radio because it sounded like no one was going to acknowledge that other games had DLC. Still listening so I apologize if you cover this later in the episode. There is section on the eShop showing which games have downloadable content. Ranging from costume skins to additional content.

Assassin's Creed 3
Ninja Gaiden 3
Fist of the North Star
Marvel Avengers
Warrior Orochi 3 Hypr
Just Dance 4

Ninja Gaiden 3 has gotten it's DLC by way of game updates instead because it's free. So it isn't listed but it is flagged as having new content on the main eShop page. Assassin's Creed 3 is at full parity with the other versions. The DLC was late by a week or two but it's there. It's just now waiting for the remaining two episodes of the Tyranny of King Washington DLC like the other platforms.

Not really sure what Activision's problem is. None of their games can be purchased on the eShop as well. Even EA at least has Fifa and Madden up there for purchase. However they still don't have Mass Effect 3 there.

In addition to the above Tank!, Tank!, Tank! is free to play outside of the US with you being able to purchase different aspects of the game. Zen Pinball is going to be like that as well with you being able to buy what table you want.

I don't believe there is any issue network wise stopping Activision from putting up the DLC for Black Ops 2. They should be able to give a definitive answer either way. If they're holding off to see if the game sells better then they should say so.  I do disagree with the idea that those playing will stick around and buy whenever the DLC comes if it does. The hardcore Call of Duty players have no problem buying a second copy on another platform. Activision waits to long and they won't get any sales because those tired of waiting will just move on to a different version or just move on completely from the game.

I think an interesting question is why are there no Activision games for sale on the eShop? Outside of Skylanders there is nothing stopping them from being sold digitally. They have 8 games out or coming (Walking Dead) on the Wii U. Remove Skylanders and you have 7 games that could be sold as they require no extra hardware. Black Ops 2 is also available on PSN and the Xbox marketplace.
