Ys VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana Announced For Switch

It's been quite a while, Adol.

After more than a quarter century, the Ys series is finally returning to Nintendo consoles.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana has been announced for a Switch release in today's Nintendo Direct. NIS America is handling publishing duties for the Falcom developed action RPG series, which will include an improved localization also coming for the game's PC release. The Switch version will release this summer.

The last new Ys title on a Nintendo console was Ys III in 1992 for the Super Nintendo, though Book I and II was brought to the Wii's Virtual Console and the DS in 2009.

Oh man - I just purchased this on Vita (to play via PSTV).

A niche announcement that won't generate as much buzz as some of the others... but an excellent game!
People should check this one out if they get a chance.

I've never played a game in this series and know nothing about it. Is this an action-RPG or something else? Does it help to have knowledge of previous games, or can this stand on its own?

Action-RPG.

Typically the series is more focused on action (think: exploring a maze-like map with real-time combat) than on RPG, although has many standard RPG tropes built into the story. Lacrimosa is apparently a bit heavier in the RPG side of things - but take that with a grain of salt. I've only played the introduction before going back to finish Ys: Memories of Celceta.

The games stand extremely well on their own. There is an over-arching world you are in, and some characters (mostly just the hero) crossing between games, but pretty sure you don't need any of that knowledge at all to enjoy playing any single game in the series.

Won't be everyone's cup of tea... and personally I found the old 2D entries in the series pretty mediocre. But the more recent games are very accessible and should have wide appeal. Check out some of the PS4 reviews if you want to see firsthand.

I'm very excited for this since I loved playing Book 1 + 2 on the Wii's Virtual Console and have wanted to play the rest of the series since.  I did create a Steam account just to play the Y's game on it, but I suck at playing with a keyboard and my computer isn't running them the best since I have a Mac and these games are meant for PC and I'm probably not using the right program to run PC games on a Mac.

Hopefully this does well and we get ports of the other games added to the Switch as well so it'll be much easier and more convenient for me to play.

I might bite on this. Never got into Ys outside of a bout with 1/2 on the Wii VC.

It took me over 20 years to learn that "Ys" isn't pronounced "wise." Rather, it rhymes with "niece" (or pronounced like "niece" without the N). Hooked on Phonics worked for me.

I haven't played an Ys game since popping in Legacy of Ys: Books I and II maybe five years ago in a game store. I've only ever sat down and put time into III on SNES and even then, I had no idea what I was doing. I couldn't get past the first cave.

Ys VIII looks fine. I'll check out more trailers and make a decision later.
