good articles to read thread

I randomly stumbled on this link to the Atlantic: Slightly More Than 100 Exceptional Works of Journalism

I loathe the Atlantic, but I've found a few great ones in the bunch:

A look at the hopelessness of the inner city: https://longreads.com/2015/05/26/the-art-of-running-from-the-police/ (STRONG language warning)

How an online reviewer of mattresses became an affiliate, got in over his head when they tried to play hardball, then.. well, just read. it's epic: https://www.fastcompany.com/3065928/sleepopolis-casper-bloggers-lawsuits-underside-of-the-mattress-wars

I bet there is a lot of this in the gaming world we have yet to hear about on this exact subject. any game journalists out there want to tackle Twitch or game reviews? I have a strong feeling that Twitch is a criminal gangster enterprise that props up its ad revenue through illicit means.

I TURNED CAPS LOCK ON FOR A WEEK AND EVERYONE HATED IT

(sounds like a great forum idea)

I read this one a few years back and it's still memorable: When a shut-in hoarder with no family and nearly no personal contacts dies in NY, what happens to his assets and funeral arrangements? https://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/18/nyregion/dying-alone-in-new-york-city.html

I loathe the Atlantic,

I agree Pacific is better but I'd still take the Atlantic over the Indian Ocean. That one just seems to upset my stomach every time.

Another from Atlantic's list has caught my eye, and it sounds eerily like the plot that leads up to Portal 2:

The Teflon Toxin

Quote
Called a “surfactant” because it reduces the surface tension of water, the slippery, stable compound was eventually used in hundreds of products, including Gore-Tex and other waterproof clothing; coatings for eye glasses and tennis rackets; stain-proof coatings for carpets and furniture; fire-fighting foam; fast food wrappers; microwave popcorn bags; bicycle lubricants; satellite components; ski wax; communications cables; and pizza boxes.

Quote
And certain rubber and industrial chemicals inexplicably turned the skin of exposed workers blue.

Quote
Though the practice resulted in a moment of unfavorable publicity when a fisherman caught one of the drums in his net, no one outside the company realized the danger the chemical presented. At some point before 1965, ocean dumping ceased, and DuPont began disposing of its Teflon waste in landfills instead.

Here is a great one for anyone who is writing fiction. It is the plot for many, some may even say most, movies.
