DSi + SD Card = Hacker's Delight?
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:10:04 PM »
I was thinking about the PSP and the fact that software really doesn't sell on the platform very well.  I think that some of this can be attributed to the rampant piracy on the PSP scene, thanks to the ability to boot homebrew OSes and pirated games right off of the PSP's memory sticks (heck, pirated games load faster off of memory stick than they do off of UMD).

Meanwhile, the DS Lite has never had support for external memory cards of any sort, which I'm sure has held back piracy on the platform to a certain degree.  On the other hand, the Wii was hacked very quickly, and I'm sure that a lot of that has to do with the ability to get at the Wii's internals via code access on SD Cards.

So my question is, do you think the DSi will be hacked quickly as well?  This will be the first SD Card-enabled handheld ever for Nintendo, and the more I think about it the more I think it might be a mistake from a piracy point of view.

I'm going to guess that despite the fact that DSi is launching next month, somehow someone somewhere has already hacked it roughly 12 days ago. Nintendo hates the R4 so much that after suing the creators, they just cut out the middle man and made the DS even easier to hack.

No it hasn't been hack yet, but it shouldn't be hard because Nintendo programmers suck at their jobs. (if game carts or dlc can save to the sd they're basically let in or if "R4"s still work even more so; worst $50 say that they're going to use the same SD keys the wii does)

Anyway I really excited about the dsi not because of anything Nintendo is doing with it, but because there is a lot of awesome homebrew software for the ds I been dieing to try but didn't want to support pirates by buying a flash card...

You could easily recreate the awesome in this video by going to a public toilet and splashing toilet water all over your face!

DSi will probably be hacked within a week or so of release, and Nintendo won't do a damn thing. They've shown time and time again that they don't care about people that pirate games and ruin small developers in the process, they only crack down on legitimate consumers. The instant someone figures out a way to bypass the DSi shop region locking, Nintendo will be on it.

There's really nothing they could do with this that they can't do with a homebrew device already.

Exactly the amount of piracy on DS already is significant. Those MicroSD cards are much more common than you think.

When I first opened this thread, Silks conclusion didn't go where I thought it was going. I'm wondering if the DSi having the SD card is an attempt to draw the same market that the PSP draws for homebrew.

Nintendo is constantly trying to cut the legs out from R4 and other piracy mechanisms, so what's the easiest way to do it? Offer it on-board your system. Now that extra $50 people would've dropped on the R4 is going straight into Nintendo's pocket, along with whatever profits they'd normally make on the DS.

I'd argue that the population of people who would pirate is fixed, and I'd also argue that the same population is quite small. So Nintendo figures, let them pirate, they're going to do it anyway, except this way we'll actually profit from the suckers.

I really think Nintendo should fight it by doing it themselves. How hard will it be to play VC games on your DSi ?

Why do things illegally when you can do them legally easily ? God knows I buy a ton of iTunes songs because its so easy and cheap. I don't mind paying $1 for a song. If it wasn't for iTunes I would of downloaded allot more songs illegally. I had ROMS on my computer but I felt guilty and deleted it and I have many VC and Wiiware games on my Wii. I had no problem paying because its easy to play them in my bed on my TV compared to sitting in front of my computer.
